The measured wave lengths and celerity with and without ice agree very well with the predicted values for finite depth of water with no ice. (Author).

In each case the effect of ice thickness, water depth, and the wave-length and angle of incidence of the incoming ocean wave is considered. In Model 1 the ice is assumed to consist of floating non-interacting mass elements of varying thickness and the shallow-water approximation is utilized to simplify the equations. A simple cosine distribution varying in one direction only is assumed. In Model 11 the mass elements of constant thickness, interact through a bending stiffness force so that the ice acts as a thin elastic plate. The mass elements are connected through a surface tension force in Model 111 so that the ice is simulated by a stretched membrane. In both Models 11 and 111 the full linearized equations are solved. Because of the complexity of the resulting analysis, calculations of the reflection and transmission coefficients, and the pressure under the ice, are made in Model 11 on the basis of the shallow water approximation. An interdisciplinary group of research organizations gathered data from the marginal ice zone (MIZ) and in the open water adjacent to the ice edge. This paper presents results of the 1987 pilot program. The ocean data gathering program spectral ocean wave model was used to hindcast wind and wave fields for the duration of the experiment. In addition, the C-CORE/MUN ice motion package (6 degrees of freedom) was placed on several ice floes to measure the wave induced ice motion at different locations along the MIZ. Analysis of the motion package records furnished time series plots of wave parameters as well as wave spectra within the ice cover. Interpretation of the aerial photographs provided measurements for floe size distribution, floe density and ice concentration.

Book excerpt: The retreat of Arctic sea ice is enabling increased ocean wave activity at the ice edge, yet the interactions between surface waves and sea ice are not fully understood. Here, we examine in situ observations of wave spectra spanning 2012-2021 in the western Arctic marginal ice zone (MIZ). Swell waves are rarely observed beyond 100 km inside the MIZ. However, local wind waves are observed forming in patches of open water amid partial ice cover during summer. These local waves remain fetch-limited between ice floes with heights less than 1 m. To investigate the physics of these waves, we conduct experiments varying wave attenuation and generation in ice in a global model with coupled interactions between waves and sea ice. A weak high-frequency attenuation rate is required to simulate the wind waves reported in observations. The choice of attenuation scheme and the wind input in ice have a remarkable impact on the extent of wave activity in sea ice across polar oceans, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. As well as demonstrating the need for stronger constraints on wave attenuation, our results suggest further attention should be paid to locally generated wind waves and their role in sea ice evolution.

The Waves-In-Ice program of the Labrador Ice Margin Experiment, LIMEX'89, provided in-depth investigation into wave processes in the MIZ to adequately model wave-ice interaction, to provide in-situ ice motion data for interpretation of airborne SAR images of surface waves, and to investigate the applicability and accuracy of in situ measurements of ocean waves and wave-induced ice motion using both traditional and new techniques. Data collected by the MV TERRA NORDICA during the field cruise included meteorological parameters, sea state, wave induced ice motion, ice dispersion, quantitative wave observation by shipboard marine radar and wave height altimeter, and ice properties. In addition, four SAR flights were carried out during the experiment. This paper describes the field experiment, data collection, and analysis techniques. Derivation of wave spectra from six degrees of freedom measurements is carried out, and the validity of using Longuet- Higgins technique for heave-pitch-roll buoy data is examined. The paper also presents preliminary results of intercomparisons between different data sources including the SAR wave data.

As a result, we derive the transport equation for a continuous ice cover of random thickness as a first step towards a transport equation model for high ice concentration. The attenuation coefficients predicted by this new equation turn out to be unrealistic. Hence, we outline an alternative derivation that may be explored in future work.

Book excerpt: The Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) is a highly dynamic region between the open ocean and the inner ice pack. The ice over this region is subjected to waves, introducing new forces but also changing the ice from a cohesive material to a mobile collection of floes. Until recently, the challenges posed by in-situ ice measurements in the MIZ prevented a detailed characterization of changes in the ice cover. The rapidly changing conditions over short distances have also prevented detailed numerical simulations. Recent developments in observational and computational capabilities allow further investigations of the physical processes for ice formation and wave-ice interactions in the MIZ. Many features of the MIZ remain to be explained and quantified, particularly rapid ice movement near the ice edge and ice thickening under wave pressure. In order to investigate these and support future field and numerical studies, a model of the MIZ is developed with a new numerical method better suited for high resolution. Simulations of waves causing ice compaction and the ice edge jet are then performed to detail the expected impacts of waves on sea ice. The potential of numerical improvements in sea ice models to obtain greater efficiency and accuracy at high resolutions is successfully demonstrated. The addition of the wave radiative stress allows the generation of realistic thickness profiles, provided that the sea ice strength is modified to represent the difference between pack ice and thinner ice. With the same modifications, obliquely incident waves on the ice edge produced an ice edge jet with a range of characteristics depending on wave parameters and modeled interactions. The magnitude of wave attenuation in sea ice and the ice strength are found to be very important factors in the simulations. Consideration of wave effects on ice thickness and drift speed are also shown to have potential to increase both open water and ice formation.

Although this increasing trend is modest, it is surprising given the overall warming of the global climate and the region. Indeed, climate models, which incorporate our best understanding of the processes affecting the region, generally simulate a decrease in sea ice. Moreover, sea ice in the Arctic has exhibited pronounced declines over the same period, consistent with global climate model simulations. For these reasons, the behavior of Antarctic sea ice has presented a conundrum for global climate change science. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in January 2016, to bring together scientists with different sets of expertise and perspectives to further explore potential mechanisms driving the evolution of recent Antarctic sea ice variability and to discuss ways to advance understanding of Antarctic sea ice and its relationship to the broader ocean-climate system. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
