Book excerpt: Executive Order 13123 calls for the Federal government to conserve water as well as energy in its 500,000 facilities. To help set priorities among water-saving measures, the Federal Energy Management Program conducted a study of Federal water use in 1997. The study indicated that the government consumes more than 50% of its water in just three types of Federal facilities: housing, hospitals, and office buildings. These facilities have enough kitchens, rest rooms, and laundry areas to provide facility managers with many opportunities to begin reducing their water use (and utility costs) with appropriate water-saving fixtures and products. Therefore, this Federal Technology Alert focuses on domestic technologies, products, and appliances such as water-efficient faucets, showerheads, toilets, urinals, washing machines, and dishwashers. Conserving water also saves the energy needed to treat, pump, and heat that water in homes, businesses, and other buildings.

Book excerpt: This report addresses the global concern of water development and stresses the need for management of the water demand. Investments in water efficiency, recycling, and conservation are recommended over conventional water supply projects for greater cost behefits and production yield. Topic areas include: (1) water use trends in major crop producing regions; (2) investments in irrigation efficiency (with explanations and analyses of gravity systems, surge irrigation, sprinkler designs, micro-methods, and pitcher techniques); (3) new cropping patterns (containing data on the effects of conservation tillage on water storage and data on water consumption rates of selected crops); (4) recycling and reuse projects (including a listing of selected sites of large-scale water reuse programs); (5) urban water conservation problems (specifying savings with water efficient household fixtures); and (6) impact factors (technology, management practices, and governmental policies). Estimates suggest that food production in the developing world must double by. By that year, urban and industrial water demand will have increased from 20% of total regional demand to 40% (about 80% of that water demand is for irrigation). This publication helps define core support areas in the irrigation subsector and set the course for country partnership strategy investments in irrigation for lending and nonlending assistance. See how this guidance note can assist and strengthen the preparation of projects that increase food productivity and security, use water within the resource availability limits, and produce long-term benefits.
