Book Synopsis Hydrogeologic Studies and Groundwater Monitoring in Snake Valley and Adjacent Hydrographic Areas, West-central Utah and East-central Nevada: report (304 pages), 4 Plates, Appendices and data tables by : Hugh A. Hurlow
Download or read book Hydrogeologic Studies and Groundwater Monitoring in Snake Valley and Adjacent Hydrographic Areas, West-central Utah and East-central Nevada: report (304 pages), 4 Plates, Appendices and data tables written by Hugh A. Hurlow and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report (269 pages, 4 plates) presents hydrogeologic, groundwater-monitoring, and hydrochemical studies by the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) in Snake Valley, Tule Valley, and Fish Springs Flat in Millard and Juab Counties, west-central Utah. Data From the newly established UGS groundwater-monitoring network establish current baseline conditions, and will help quantify the effects of future variations in climate and groundwater pumping. New hydrochemical data show that groundwater quality is generally good, major-solute chemistry varies systematically from recharge to discharge areas, and suggest that most groundwater was recharged over one thousand years ago, implying low recharge rates and/or long or slow flow paths. Two aquifer tests yield estimates of transmissivity and storativity for the carbonate-rock and basin-fill aquifers. Variations in the potentiometric surface, hydrogeology, and hydrochemistry are consistent with the hypothesis of regional groundwater flow from Snake Valley northeast to Tule Valley and Fish Springs. Collectively, our work delineates groundwater levels, flow, and chemistry in Snake Valley and adjacent basins to a much greater degree than previously possible, and emphasizes the sensitivity of the groundwater system to possible increases in groundwater pumping.

Book Synopsis Geologic and Hydrologic Characterization of Regional Nongeothermal Groundwater Resources in the Cove Fort Area, Millard and Beaver Counties, Utah by : Stefan M. Kirby
Download or read book Geologic and Hydrologic Characterization of Regional Nongeothermal Groundwater Resources in the Cove Fort Area, Millard and Beaver Counties, Utah written by Stefan M. Kirby and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2012 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the nongeothermal hydrogeologic system of the Cove Creek basin and an adjoining part of the Beaver River basin north of Milford, in Millard and Beaver Counties, Utah. The groundwater system in the study area hosts two commercial geothermal reservoirs, provides the entire agricultural and culinary water supply, and may be connected with groundwater in adjoining basins. The report presents a regional hydrogeologic framework assessment, including a newly compiled 1:100,000-scale geologic map, five schematic cross sections, estimates of thickness and hydrologic character of the basin fill based on geophysics and available well logs, and a new potentiometric surface map for the study area. The report also presents and interprets new and compiled geochemical and isotopic data and a new water budget for the study area that includes estimates of subsurface flow to adjoining basins. 65 pages + 2 plates

Book excerpt: Mountain Ice and Water: Investigations of the Hydrologic Cycle in Alpine Environments is a new volume of papers reviewed and edited by John Shroder, Emeritus Professor of Geography and Geology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, USA, and Greg Greenwood, Director of the Mountain Research Initiative from Bern, Switzerland. Chapters in this book were derived from research papers that were delivered at the Perth III Conference on Mountains of our Future Earth in Scotland in October 2015. The conference was established to help develop the knowledge necessary to respond effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and to support transformations toward global sustainability in the coming decades. To this end, the conference and book have investigated the future situation in mountains from three points of view. (1) Dynamic Planet: Observing, explaining, understanding, and projecting Earth, environmental, and societal system trends, drivers, and processes and their interactions to anticipate global thresholds and risks, (2) Global Sustainable Development: Increasing knowledge for sustainable, secure, and fair stewardship of biodiversity, food, water, health, energy, materials, and other ecosystem services, and (3) Transformations towards Sustainability: Understanding transformation processes and options, assessing how these relate to human values, emerging technologies and social and economic development pathways, and evaluating strategies for governing and managing the global environment across sectors and scales. - Derived from research papers delivered at the Perth III Conference on Mountains of our Future Earth in Scotland in October 2015 - Helps develop the knowledge necessary for responding effectively in coming decades to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and tactics for global sustainability - Provides the research community working on global change in mountains with a broader framework established by the Future Earth initiative

Book Synopsis Estimating Groundwater Recharge by : Richard W. Healy
Download or read book Estimating Groundwater Recharge written by Richard W. Healy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding groundwater recharge is essential for successful management of water resources and modeling fluid and contaminant transport within the subsurface. This book provides a critical evaluation of the theory and assumptions that underlie methods for estimating rates of groundwater recharge. Detailed explanations of the methods are provided - allowing readers to apply many of the techniques themselves without needing to consult additional references. Numerous practical examples highlight benefits and limitations of each method. Approximately 900 references allow advanced practitioners to pursue additional information on any method. For the first time, theoretical and practical considerations for selecting and applying methods for estimating groundwater recharge are covered in a single volume with uniform presentation. Hydrogeologists, water-resource specialists, civil and agricultural engineers, earth and environmental scientists and agronomists will benefit from this informative and practical book. It can serve as the primary text for a graduate-level course on groundwater recharge or as an adjunct text for courses on groundwater hydrology or hydrogeology. For the benefit of students and instructors, problem sets of varying difficulty are available at http://wwwbrr.cr.usgs.gov/projects/GW_Unsat/Recharge_Book/

Book Synopsis Great Basin National Park by : Gretchen M. Baker
Download or read book Great Basin National Park written by Gretchen M. Baker and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2012-04-14 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great Basin National Park is in large part a high-alpine park, but it sits in one of America’s driest, least populated, and most isolated deserts. That contrast is one facet of the diversity that characterizes this region. Within and outside the park are phenomenal landscape features, biotic wonders, unique environments, varied historic sites, and the local colors of isolated towns and ranches. Vast Snake and Spring Valleys, bracketing the national park, are also subjects of one of the West's most divisive environment contests, over what on the surface seems most absent but underground is abundant enough for sprawling Las Vegas to covet it—water.
