Download or read book Water Hyacinth written by Shaohua Yan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water hyacinth is a disruptive factor in aquatic ecosystem management and ecosystem services, and causes problems in fisheries, transportation waterways, irrigation, hydropower generation, and water resources. To address these concerns, it is necessary to integrate past studies with current research and innovations to identify where the knowledge gap is and to creatively assess and solve the problems in a global context. This book provides comprehensive coverage of new research and technological innovations for the application of controlling, managing, harvesting, postharvest processing and utilizing the water hyacinth.

Book excerpt: It is almost impossible for an individual to keep pace with the huge bulk of, not always readily accessible, literature on waterhyacinth which has amassed in recent years. This book provides for the first time a comprehensive bibliography of over 2700 references and a critical review of the current knowledge on all aspects of the plant. Important data on all these aspects have been compiled and presented in numerous tables and figures making the book the most important reference work to date on waterhyacinth. Areas requiring the extra attention of researchers are also indicated. In recent years aquatic weeds such as waterhyacinth have received great attention, not only for the magnitude of problems caused by them in the management of water resources, but also for the promise they hold as a new resource for such diverse uses as animal feed, compost, paper, energy (biogas) and above all the control of water pollution (wastewater treatment). Waterhyacinth outclasses all other aquatic weeds in its rate of growth, multiplication and dry matter production, and its potential ability in respect to energy and pollution control.

Book excerpt: This bibliography contains citations concerning the use of water hyacinths in waste treatment and methane production. Anaerobic digestion processes, waste processing, and digestion conditions are discussed. Water hyacinth wastewater treatment and water quality control are included. Energy farming and cropping through aquatic biomass, forestry, and agricultural plants are considered. (This updated bibliography contains 232 citations, 62 of which are new entries to the previous edition.).
Book Synopsis Making Aquatic Weeds Useful by : National Research Council
Download or read book Making Aquatic Weeds Useful written by National Research Council and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2002-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This National Academy of Sciences report describes ways to exploit aquatic weeds for grazing, and by harvesting and processing for use as compost, animal feed, pulp, paper, and fuel. The book also describes utilization for sewage and industrial wastewater.Aquatic weeds have always existed, but in recent decades their effects have been magnified by man?s more intensive use of natural water bodies - his modifying them into canals and dams, polluting them with farm and city wastewaters, and introducing aggressive plant species into new locations. These plants, among the most prolific on earth, grow luxuriantly in the tropics, weigh hundreds of tons per hectare, and can be a serious hindrance to a nation?s development efforts. Eradication of the weeds has proved impossible, and even reasonable control is difficult. Turning these weeds to productive use would be desirable, but only limited research has been carried out. This report examines methods for controlling aquatic weeds and using them to best advantage, especially those methods that show promise for less-developed countries. It emphasizes techniques for converting weeds for feed, food, fertilizer, and energy production. It examines, for example, biological control techniques in which herbivorous tropical animals (fish, waterfowl, rodents, and other mammals) convert the troublesome plants directly to meat.

Book Synopsis Bioindicators and Environmental Management by : Bozzano G Luisa
Download or read book Bioindicators and Environmental Management written by Bozzano G Luisa and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1991-09-26 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential book contains material presented at a September 1990 meeting organized by the Commission for Bioindicators, International Union for Biological Sciences.**A key role of the Commission for Bioindicators (IUBS) is to promote the use of bioindicators in environmental management. This means encouraging the transfer of ideas regarding potential bioindicators, and originating in laboratories, into the harsher realities of field environmental monitoring. Although the concept of biomonitoring is ancient, its application to current monitoring problems is relatively slow to develop.**In a bid to rectify this problem, this invaluable book brings together and discusses approaches developed around the world. It will provide both environmental administrators and research scientists with a valuable sense of proportion of the state of the art in their particular field. - Bioindicators and Environmental Management is organized into four sections - Bioindicators, industry, and administration - Biomonitoring of the Chernobyl accident - Monitoring long-term/large-scale environmental trends - Basic research in biomonitoring
