Book excerpt: The Fever burned hot and bright across a world unprepared for the devastation the virus would bring. Stranded on a lonely barrier island, William Hill struggled to make it through a brutal winter. The days of easy food from the ocean had vanished when the cold set in. The fish disappeared, along with the ducks, and even the shorebirds. Everything had fled. Everything except the demons. The nights are dark, the days a stumbling venture from one horror to the next. The mainland offers hope, but the reality is much different. In one place, William Hill stands in the center of a town where the scattered remains of the dead lie next to the road like litter tossed from passing cars, where the search for the living fails to turn up even one soul. Infected by a parasite destined to steal his mind, hunted by the Chosen, and dogged by a beautiful woman who claims to be an elf, he sometimes wonders if life can get any stranger. Then Daniel offers a glimpse of the coming world, a place where cavorting beasts feast upon the dead, where dragons haunt nearby forests, where the hordes crawl from the ground by the millions and sweep across the earth. The elf says she needs his blood to repair the rift between worlds, to finally put an end to the madness. He doesn't mind donating a little to the cause, but the more he hears, the more he doubts her intentions and the more the ceremony sounds like a full-scale sacrifice. In the end, William discovers that he can count on nothing, not even his sanity.

Unable to understand how and wanting to ask, he is assaulted by unseen voices that cry out in his mind and threaten to fracture the integrity of his sanity. To escape these voices, he travels to different times in the checkered history of Debouton "Boonetown" Alabama. He follows the Boones and an entity referred to as "The Piper" and finds himself confronted by elements of the supernatural. He also discovers that these "travels" are not dreams in the traditional sense and that he has the power to change that particular part of the past he inhabits. As each new piece is uncovered he comes to the realization that the Piper has an agenda, and time is wasting. Will Thomas Pfeiffer be able to put the pieces together and find what he has to do before the Time of Reckoning is at hand? Time, existence, and his sanity hang in the balance.

Book excerpt: The decade of the fifties is considered to be “The Age of Innocence” by historians. Television was in its infancy and those who could afford one watched The Ed Sullivan Show, Howdy Doody and Alfred Hitchcock Presents in black and white. Radio stations still boasted such programs as Sky King, The Lone Ranger, Ellery Queen, Inner Sanctum and Gang Busters, and all with enormous audiences. Women wore dresses; girls wore cardigans buttoned up the back over pinecone bras, and only boys wore jeans. Spanking a child was not considered child abuse, and even the tougher teenagers addressed their elders as “sir” or “mam.” A girl may have smoked cigarettes but she never did it on a public street, and a man always held a door open for a lady. It’s true; times were simpler back then, but not nearly as innocent as historians would lead us to believe. This is not a history book. Instead this story takes us back to that time and dispels the myth that has been perpetuated by those who were not there to witness the events. Through the eyes of teenagers, typical of those who lived in any of the small cities and towns across America during that time, the reader will find themselves with memories resurrected that they can personally relate to. Though fictionalized, all of the characters depicted in the book are “real,” and with whatever one you may empathize, you will feel very comfortable wearing their crinolines or motorcycle jackets.

I ask you to consider a forty-seven-year old man as he struggles to correct, perhaps too late, the sins of a quickly passing life. I ask you to place yourself in the seat of a fully grown, but hardly mature, thirteen-year-old boy looking for answers to just about everything. His is the story of a boy willing to ask, but not always accept, his father's reasoning for walking out on his family and why it took nine years for his dad to try and return. Be prepared to laugh, cry, and regale as you jump into what was a twelve-hour gab session in an awkward but productive attempt to ask and answer questions concerning the past years and the recent. The recent being the miracle of the boy's father stepping out of character and stepping into his son's life for one week as a parental volunteer at the boy's Boy Scout troop's yearly summer camp. Learn how a simple wrong turn on the Pennsylvania turnpike could fulfill the father's dream of a lifetime and learn that a man needs his child as much as the child needs him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in the Río Grande Valley of south Texas, independent scholar and creative writer Gloria Anzaldúa was an internationally acclaimed cultural theorist. As the author of Borderlands / La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Anzaldúa played a major role in shaping contemporary Chicano/a and lesbian/queer theories and identities. As an editor of three anthologies, including the groundbreaking This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color, she played an equally vital role in developing an inclusionary, multicultural feminist movement. A versatile author, Anzaldúa published poetry, theoretical essays, short stories, autobiographical narratives, interviews, and children’s books. Her work, which has been included in more than 100 anthologies to date, has helped to transform academic fields including American, Chicano/a, composition, ethnic, literary, and women’s studies. This reader—which provides a representative sample of the poetry, prose, fiction, and experimental autobiographical writing that Anzaldúa produced during her thirty-year career—demonstrates the breadth and philosophical depth of her work. While the reader contains much of Anzaldúa’s published writing (including several pieces now out of print), more than half the material has never before been published. This newly available work offers fresh insights into crucial aspects of Anzaldúa’s life and career, including her upbringing, education, teaching experiences, writing practice and aesthetics, lifelong health struggles, and interest in visual art, as well as her theories of disability, multiculturalism, pedagogy, and spiritual activism. The pieces are arranged chronologically; each one is preceded by a brief introduction. The collection includes a glossary of Anzaldúa’s key terms and concepts, a timeline of her life, primary and secondary bibliographies, and a detailed index.
