Book excerpt: Excerpt from Washington Medical Annals, Vol. 2: March, 1903-January, 1904 Dr. Fry related the case of a child 8 months old, which had an evacuation by straining one morning, and had also pain, though not very severe. The child was not very sick, vomiting was not a feature, but there was obstinate constipation. Not until the third day did its condition demand operation. Intussusception was suspected, and an operation was performed by Dr. Kerr. When the ether was given the child had a movement of the bowels. The diagnosis was found correct, the intussusception was manually reduced and the child recovered. The symptoms of intussusception were some times so vague that it was impossible to make a diagnosis and operate within 24 or even 48 hours. The disappointment, however, is mitigated in some degree, when we find that the methods of calculation by which they determined the age of their own ovum, to be from thirteen to fourteen days would, if applied in the same manner to Peters' ovum, make that one a day older, viz fourteen to fifteen days. But even on this basis, the extremely young ovum of the authors is only one day younger than that of Peters. It was after twelve at night that I was called to see the child with Dr. Mallan. The boy had been sick for sev eral days with what appeared a simple laryngitis with slight audi ble respiration. During the twenty-four hours preceding my visit the breathing had become more and more labored. The child's condition demanded immediate relief, which was given through the introduction of an intubation tube. The voice was only slightly hoarse. In order to safeguard the child, antitoxin was also administered. Culture proved negative. Child died on the second day after intubation, from pneumonia. The subject of a Presidential Address is a debatable one. Shall it be an oration in medicine; shall it treat of the practical or literary side of medicine; shall it be a review of the year's activities; or shall it depict, for pattern, a model society? The question of ease or difficulty in the treatment of the subject has no place in the selec tion of the subject. The decision as to the subject should be made in the light of the President's conception Of his responsi bility to the Society. This view has constrained me to eschew the congenial, and to pass in review before you some of the events of the year, with observations as to two of the Society's needs. First, let me express to the entire membership of the Society a sense of my deep appreciation of its uniform courtesy and consideration, of its generous forbearance, and Of its hearty cooperation - to all Of which any success which my administration may have achieved 18 due. No terms are sufficiently expressive of my appreciation of the loyalty of the Recording and Corresponding Secretaries. I feel that I could not have measured up in any appreciable degree to the requirements of the Presidential office without their intelligent aid and generous support.
