This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper surveys the types of models producing multiple equilibria in financial markets. It argues that such models are consistent with observed phenomena, such as the greater volatility of financial asset prices than of macroeconomic fundamentals. Alternative explanations are compared with the stylized facts concerning capital flows, portfolio shifts, and exchange rate crises. Implications for crisis prediction and prevention are then discussed.

It also serves as a reference source for professional economists. Though other good surveys and handbooks are available, they are too extensive to serve as a graduate textbook. In many cases they are outdated, as there has been an explosion of work on the issues over the last decade, stimulated by events such as the Asian crises of 1997 and 1998, the creation of the Euro zone in 1999, and Argentina's 2001 default. This book covers up-to-date developments on these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an integrated compilation of selected major articles published by the author in several fields of international finance. These include contributions to the understanding of currency crises and financial contagion, the evolution of exchange rate regimes, the interaction between national fiscal policies and regional monetary unions, and the effect of uncertainty on the gains from international economic policy coordination. The author spent most of his career doing research at established institutions (the Bank of Canada, OECD, and IMF), and these articles emerged from the need to understand the major economic policy issues of the day. In the book's introduction, the author discusses the motivation for these contributions and the unifying themes that emerged, while a concluding chapter provides his personal reflections and suggestions about promising avenues for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important and timely two-volume collection presents the key issues and processes that surround recent large-scale financial crises - in Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere - and identifies procedures that will help to avoid and manage crises. The articles are drawn from leading journals in political economy, international relations, political science and economics. The reconstruction of the international financial architecture is identified as a working compromise which brings together neo-Keynesian and neo-liberal principles but which, in itself, cannot fully answer the challenges of systemic risk. Globalization processes contribute to systemic risk and complicate the efforts of the IMF and other international financial institutions to create order and stability. The Political Economy of Financial Crises will be invaluable to a broad interdisciplinary audience as a reference source to support teaching and research.

This paper reviews the theories behind capital account liberalization and examines the dangers associated with free capital flows. The authors conclude that the dangers can be limited through a combination of sound macroeconomic and prudential policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We apply a new approach to a new panel data set on bilateral gross cross-border equity flows between 14 countries, 1989-96. The model integrates elements of the finance literature on portfolio composition and the international macroeconomics and asset trade literature. Gross asset flows depend on market size in both source and destination country as well as trading costs, in which both information and the transaction technology play a role. Distance proxies some information costs, and other variables explicitly represent information transmission, an information asymmetry between domestic and foreign investors, and the efficiency of transactions. The remarkably good results have strong implications for theories of asset trade. We find that the geography of information is the main determinant of the pattern of international transactions, while there is little support in our data for diversification and return-chasing motives for transactions."--Authors.
