Book excerpt: Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff (1848-1931) has been considered the highest authority in classical philology for generations. In 1889, he published what has been regarded as his most significant study, that is, a monumental commented edition of Euripides’s Herakles which includes a general introduction to Greek tragedy. A section of this introduction, entitled “Was ist eine attische Tragödie?”, is of particular worth in itself in that it provides a passionate and detailed account of the evolution of Greek tragedy, from its origins, much discussed among scholars, to its classic fifth-century BC form. In some respects, it also constitutes a mature response to Friedrich Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy whose publication, in 1872, had triggered a heated debate between the two still young scholars. This parallel edition presents the first English translation of a text that has served as a landmark for ancient drama scholars for decades and still offers many useful and relevant suggestions.

The volume edited by Diego Lanza and Gherardo Ugolini is structured in three parts. In the first one (“Towards a science of antiquity”) the approach of Anglo-Saxon philology (R. Bentley) and the institutionalization of the discipline in the German academic world (C.G. Heyne and F.A. Wolf) are described. In the second part (“The illusion of the archetype. Classical Studies in the Germany of the 19th Century”) the theoretical contributions and main methodological disputes that followed are analysed (K. Lachmann, J.G. Hermann, A. Boeckh, F. Nietzsche and U. von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff). The last part (“The classical philology of the 20th century”) treats the redefinition of classical studies after the Great War in Germany (W. Jaeger) and in Italy (G. Pasquali). In this context, the contributions of papyrology and of the new images of antiquity that have emerged in the works of writers, narrators, and translators of our time have been considered. This part finishes with the presentation of some of the most influential scholars of the last decades (B. Snell, E.R. Dodds, J.-P. Vernant, B. Gentili, N. Loraux).

Book excerpt: In 1602 and 1604 two collections of paradoxes, both entitled Four Paradoxes, authored by Thomas Scott, and Thomas and Dudley Digges, respectively, were published. Scott, a Protestant preacher, wrote four poems about art, law, war, and service. On the other hand, the diplomat and intellectual Dudley Digges published his father’s two paradoxes about the art of war together with his own two texts concerning the worthiness of war and warriors. What do these two collections of paradoxes have in common, and why publishing their critical edition together? Apparently, besides sharing the same title, the two works do not seem to have anything else in common. Nevertheless, this modern spelling critical edition of both texts aims at demonstrating that they share political, cultural, and genre-related features connected with the circulation of paradoxical discourse about war in early modern England.

They are intended for any who are reading the plays with serious interest; for those who read them only in translation all Greek terms are fully explained, and the few quotations are given in English. As these plays constitute the earliest drama of the world, outgrowth of another society than ours, a certain remoteness is what first impresses one, even if one feels, beneath what is antique and strange, a peculiar freshness and power. I should like to aid in clearing away that sense of remoteness, to aid in revealing the perennial beauty and vigor. Prominence is given to a side which it is often taken for granted needs little or no elucidation. Dramatic art includes much besides text; it is largely in what we have to add in imagination that the remoteness of Attic tragedy lies. The earlier chapters therefore include some pages on the nature of drama and on the peculiarities of Attic drama. Some may think too much space is given to theory, and again too much to elementary matters. I hope those to whom such matters are elementary and familiar will have patience, for the sake of others who may be grateful for a statement of some of the foundations of criticism. All too few are in fact familiar with those foundations. Where can one more fitly make their acquaintance, or review them, than in studying masterpieces of the earliest dramatic school? Book excerpt: In the Alcestis, the title character sacrifices her own life to save that of her husband, Admetus, when he is presented with the opportunity to have someone die in his place. Alcestis compresses within itself both tragedy and its apparent reversal, staging in the process fascinating questions about gender roles, family loyalties, the nature of heroism, and the role of commemoration. Alcestis is Euripides's earliest complete work and his only surviving play from the period preceding the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War. Currently dominant post-structuralist models of Greek tragedy focus on its 'oppositional' role in the discourse of war and public values. This study challenges not only this politicised model of tragic discourse but also both traditional masculinist and more recent feminist readings of the discourse and performance of gender in this remarkable play. The play survived in the performance repertoire of antiquity into the Roman period. Euripides' version strongly influenced the reception of the myth through the middles ages into the Renaissance, and the story enjoyed a lively afterlife through opera. Alcestis' contested reception in the last two centuries charts our changing understanding of tragedy. Niall Slater's study explores the reception and afterlife of the play, as well as its main themes, the myth before the play, the play's historical and social context and the central developments in modern criticism.
