Book excerpt: The book is founded on the stories told by the authors older relatives about their wartime exploits. How they were sent away to the countryside when the bombs started to fall and how different life was compared to Portsmouth and London. The older ones told some of their adventures in France and Germany. This book is based on the many stories. I have heard these during my earlier years, and it left a lasting impression on my mind. Some of it is true, while some of it is fiction. In part, the book is a tribute to the memory of the storytellers, now sadly long gone, whose stories gave me the inspiration to write. The book tells the story of two twins as they journey from blissful childhood through the horrors of war and their friendships and loves they develop along the way. Set between 1939 and 1945, it will give the reader a very different view of life as a young adult from what can be experienced today.

For the first several months, Jean knelt down at the hospital chapel, and her eyes were always wet and swollen. During day, she spent most of her time with Minister Min, and at night she was glued at the chapel. One day, she left the place, leaving a brief note, "Dear Suk, As I know you wouldn't let me, I leave this note instead. I love you. I adore you, my dear sister. But I have to go my way, led by my shepherd, our good Lord. You know I am happy and I am truly excited to see my old friends. They need me and I want to be consumed for them. Please do not look for me because your way is different in the world, though our ways are the same in heaven. Forever yours, Jean In the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the course of American history, imperialism and anti-imperialism have been awkwardly paired as influences on the politics, culture, and diplomacy of the United States. The Declaration of Independence, after all, is an anti-imperial document, cataloguing the sins of the metropolitan government against the colonies. With the Revolution, and again in 1812, the nation stood against the most powerful empire in the world and declared itself independent. As noted by Ian Tyrrell and Jay Sexton, however, American "anti-imperialism was clearly selective, geographically, racially, and constitutionally." Empire’s Twin broadens our conception of anti-imperialist actors, ideas, and actions; it charts this story across the range of American history, from the Revolution to our own era; and it opens up the transnational and global dimensions of American anti-imperialism. By tracking the diverse manifestations of American anti-imperialism, this book highlights the different ways in which historians can approach it in their research and teaching. The contributors cover a wide range of subjects, including the discourse of anti-imperialism in the Early Republic and Civil War, anti-imperialist actions in the U.S. during the Mexican Revolution, the anti-imperial dimensions of early U.S. encounters in the Middle East, and the transnational nature of anti-imperialist public sentiment during the Cold War and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diary gives a remarkably vivid description of the life of Doreen Bates, a professional young woman, who went against the social norms of her time to intentionally have twins fathered by an older married, but childless, colleague in the Inland Revenue, where they both worked as Income Tax Inspectors. At the time the twins were born Doreen did not know if their father could, or would, form part of the family. In the event, he was able to make frequent visits and helped practically, emotionally and financially with the childrens’ upbringing. The diary commences a few months after the twins were born. Doreen lived with them and a live-in nanny in South London where they experienced relentless days and nights of enemy bombing. In 1944 the twins and their nanny were evacuated to the incomparably safer and beautiful rural setting of a Wiltshire village where Doreen joined them for every weekend. In contrast to the chaos and fear that accompanied the wartime conditions, Doreen’s emotional life is much less turbulent than in the previous volume of her diary. This reflects the profound satisfaction she felt as a result of achieving her dream of having children. She was a remarkably enlightened parent. Her recording of their lives in this diary is detailed, intimate, and often humorous. Historical happenings are mentioned, but form only the incidental backdrop to her domestic and professional life. “Brimming with soul, passion, candour and wit, the diaries of Doreen Bates are an extraordinary read, giving a vivid insight into the life of a woman unvanquished by her time, a woman who leaps from the page so strikingly that you feel your pulse beating in time with hers. Edited in an act of great love and generosity by her children, they should take their place as one of the essential diaries of the twentieth century for the window they offer into another world, another heart.” – Lucy Caldwell

Waitresses in one of the city's finest institutions and both with budding romances, the war could not feel farther away. But, slowly, the tides begin to change. The war in Europe is creeping toward the UK, and the men are being called to aid in military efforts. Tillie's fiancé Colin joins the RAF, flying dangerous missions over Germany, and Maggie's childhood love Micah finds himself far away in France, with no way to return. Devastated but determined, the twins resolve to do their part for their country - Maggie in the Women's Voluntary Service and Tillie for the British Red Cross. Then, the Blitz begins. And everything changes. Nightly airstrikes wreak havoc on the city, leaving ruin in their wake. Ambulance shifts for Tillie become desperate missions to pull injured women and children from the rubble, while the constant fear for the fates of their beloveds, far from home, is almost too much for the girls to bear. And when tragedy strikes for both sisters, they know nothing will ever be the same again. Will the twins be strong enough to protect themselves and the ones they love? And can true love really prevail when the skies are darkened by war?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even twins are unique. Most people idealize twins, fantasizing a close, perpetually loving relationship. Yet Klein, herself an identical twin, demonstrates that twins have complicated and intense relationships that range from over-identification or excessive closeness to profound estrangement and conflict. Most twins who are raised as individuals deal with the significant emotional pain of separation in adolescence or young adulthood, yet as mature adults can come to love and respect each other as individuals. As Klein makes clear, the parenting that twins receive as infants and young children affects the relationships that they have with one another and with the world they choose to function in. Because parenting is a critical determinant of psychological well-being, it should be treated as a serious but manageable challenge. This book is a must-read for twins, their parents, and scholars, students, and other researchers and professionals dealing with mental health and child development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edwin Llewellyn Charles was a slim, handsome youth, but Terence John, his brother, was beautiful and he knew it. Technically, the boys were twins, but their personalities could not have been more different. So begins this sweeping true story of a fractured but close - knit Australian family during World War II, focusing on the service of the twins and life on the home front as experienced primarily by their elder sister and mother. When hostilities are declared, Terry joins the Australian Military Forces and is quickly promoted. However, as a militiaman, he is banned from serving overseas. Having watched Edwin join the glamorous RAAF and become a pilot, Terry resigns his commission to follow his twin. Forced to swallow the disappointment of failing to emulate Edwin by winning his wings, Terry becomes a navigator in heavy bombers in the closing stages of the European war. Readers are transported from the Charles family home in northern NSW to Canberra, Africa, England, Scotland, the United States, the Subcontinent and Ceylon between 1939 and the end of 1945 as the perspective shifts between the two protagonists. Little - known aspects of wartime experience are explored, including the so - called 'wet canteens' debate; the international negotiations over the release of interned Allied and Japanese diplomats, and the life of the Raj on the north - west frontier and in India and Ceylon. The author's clever interweaving of primary documents with historical fact gives rare insights into the lives and relationships of the Charles family and creates an authentic snapshot of wartime Australia. The Charles Family's War is a compassionate and multi - layered examination of two intelligent and articulate young men who come of age in the cauldron of global conflict.

Book excerpt: All countries, regions and institutions are ultimately built on a degree of consensus, on a collective commitment to a concept, belief or value system. This consensus is continuously rephrased and reinvented through a narrative of cohesion and challenged by expressions of discontent and discord. The history of the Low Countries is characterised by both a striving for consensus and eruptions of discord, both internally and from external challenges. This interdisciplinary volume explores consensus and discord in a Low Countries context along broad cultural, linguistic and historical lines. Disciplines represented include early-modern and contemporary history; art history; film; literature; and translation scholars from both the Low Countries and beyond.
