Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though Dorothy Thompson excavated the Agora Bone Well in 1938, the well and its remarkable finds have never been fully studied until now. Located outside the northwest corner of the Athenian Agora and dating to the second quarter of the 2nd century B.C., the well contained the remains of roughly 460 newborn infants, as well as a few older individuals. Also found in the well were the bones of over 150 dogs and an assortment of other animals, plus various artifacts, including an intriguing herm (treated here by Andrew Stewart) and an ivory chape. In addition to a thorough examination of the contents of the well, the authors provide a thoughtful analysis of the neighborhood in which the well was located and carefully compare the deposit with similar accumulations found elsewhere in the Mediterranean. The product of close cooperation between archaeological, palaeoanthropological, and faunal scholars, this interdisciplinary work will be of interest to a large audience across a variety of fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard-Jude Thompson investigates Martin Noth's conclusion about the Deuteronomistic History (DH) that the people of Israel had committed apostasy ceased to obey the law code of Yhwh, and thus lost their land. Scholars have challenged Noth's hypothesis and even the existence of such a history. The present study adopts a thematic reading of the DH as a coherent corpus of writing with a consistent message. A close reading reveals a god, Yhwh, who declares war on other gods and commands his followers to conquer and to sanctify the mountain of the Emorites and the land of Canaan to Yhwh. The sanctification includes the killing of the people living there: "When you attack them, you shall annihilate them entirely. Do not make a treaty with them and do not show mercy to them". Throughout the DH, Yhwh and his spokespersons reward obedience and punish disobedience. Because the disobedient people of Israel fail to enforce Yhwh's command to remove the nations of Canaan, Yhwh enforces imperial law and sentences them to national death and exile. The author hypothesizes that the DH depicts an imperial, military covenant. After a survey of the inscriptions of the second-millennium b.c.e. Levant, the Hittite empire, the Neo-Assyrian empire, and the first-millennium b.c.e Levant, the study concludes with a hypothesis that the evidence points to the ideology of the Neo-Assyrian empire as the historical precedent for the Dtr covenant. The study challenges two presuppositions that underlie both the DH and its scholarship: that of the torahas law and that of Yhwh as a unique god.

Book excerpt: Dry ground is a dream, one owned by few on Terra II. Ever since losing contact with Earth, much of the surviving human colony has known nothing but life on the open water. Land is for the ruling class who govern the planet and regulate trade, a place the seaborn have never seen. For them, survival in the harsh conditions of open water and the dangers rampant in the floating cities is a daily struggle. For some, the wavelanders, survival comes at a cost of personal freedoms, were the community thrives due to its strict traditions. For Nerida, life as a wavelander means marriage to man she hates and whom she will do anything to escape. Although travel alone in the expanse of the Greater Sea means certain death from pirates and the creatures that dwell out there, it is a risk she is willing to take. Despite the risks, it is also a life of loneliness and isolation until she is saved by a being who rises from the depths. A male unlike any other she has ever seen before. He calls her his mate but a possible future between them is threatened when she is forced to confront everything she ran from.Ji'wa is a Sirein who is plagued with responsibilities in a life that he never wanted. For generations, the Sirei have lived in spaceships looking for a new home for their species after escaping a dying world. When dire situations force them to make their home on a watery world dotted with land, the orders are to stay clear of the dangers above the seas and especially far away from the beings who dwell above the waves. When Ji'wa saves a finless land-dweller, he cannot forget the strange being nor ignore the call of the mating bond. Attempting to mate with the alien female carries many risks, but he will embrace them all for a chance to be with her...but will he be able to claim his mate before the sea demands his return?Welcome to a dystopian alien retelling of the little mermaid fairy tale.

Book excerpt: Excavations at the early Iron age site of Khirbet Qeiyafa (Israel), directed from 2007 to 2011 by Yosef Garfinkel and Saar Ganor under the auspices of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Israel Antiquities Authority, have attracted considerable scholarly and media attention since the very first season, when the discovery of an inscribed ostracon sparked controversies over the site's historical significance and nature. Located at the entrance of the Elah Valley, protected by a casemate wall and two monumental gateways, the settlement of Qeiyafa existed for barely half a century. Its dating and the correlation of the archaeological evidence with the regional history, not least the rise of an early Judahite monarchy, have become matters of intense academic debate. Resulting from a colloquium of the Swiss Society of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, this volume offers a condensed report by main excavator Yosef Garfinkel as well as several in-depth studies on archaeological, historical, epigraphical, iconographical and biblical issues.
