Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-level chronicle of the violent drug war in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico—with accounts from both traffickers and law enforcement, and “astute analysis” (The Americas). Thousands die in drug-related violence every year in Mexico. Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, adjacent to El Paso, Texas, has become the most violent city in the drug war. Much of the cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine consumed in the United States is imported across the Mexican border, making El Paso/Juárez one of the major drug-trafficking venues in the world. In this anthropological study of drug trafficking and anti-drug law enforcement efforts on the US–Mexico border, Howard Campbell uses an ethnographic perspective to chronicle the recent Mexican drug war, focusing especially on people and events in the El Paso/Juárez area. It is the first social science study of the violent drug war that is tearing Mexico apart. Based on deep access to the drug-smuggling world, this study presents the drug war through the words of direct participants. Half of the book consists of oral histories from drug traffickers, and the other half from law enforcement officials. There is much journalistic coverage of the drug war, but very seldom are the lived experiences of traffickers and “narcs” presented in such vivid detail. In addition to providing an up-close, personal view of this world, Campbell explains and analyzes the functioning of cartels, the corruption that facilitates trafficking, the strategies of smugglers and anti-narcotics officials, and the perilous culture of drug trafficking that Campbell refers to as the “Drug War Zone.” “This collection of oral histories of drug traffickers and counter-drug officials examines the border narco-world through the eyes of first-hand participants . . . An invaluable resource for anyone seeking a greater sociological understanding.” —Journal of Latin American Studies

Book excerpt: You Can't See It, but it's there, hidden in your home PC. A threat so potent it could destroy massive amounts of data and shut down power plants, fuel supplies, space satellites, the armed forces, millions of computers, and even parts of the Internet. A virtually undetectable but devastating new weapon is cyberwarfare, the next wave of terrorism, and it could be launched from your very own computer. Thousands of computer super-viruses, monster worms, and zombies created by terrorists and rogue governments are the new tools of war with the potential for catastrophic results. In this chilling account, military expert and on-air analyst James F. Dunnigan sounds the alarm on what could be the nation's next surprise attack -- a cyber Pearl Harbor just waiting to happen. Every day, there are warnings of computer viruses and Internet weaknesses with the potential to disrupt society. Most are the work of amateur hackers. But consider also the super zombies, military-grade computer weapons being created by government cyberwar units. Virtually undetectable, they have the power to destroy everything, lethally spread via the Internet, and hide on home computers, waiting to be unleashed. Despite constant warnings about our cyber vulnerability and billions of dollars spent defending our networks, the risk of catastrophic cyber attacks continues to grow. Now, Dunnigan explains the rules of cyberwar -- what it is, what could happen, and how to protect yourself from becoming a pawn. From real-life attack scenarios to explanations of monster viruses, from cyberwarriors to what forces pose the most dangerous threats, Dunnigan offers clear, concise information for fighting back against a phantom enemy that may be the deadliest we've ever known. Book excerpt: "Usually when we talk about post traumatic stress disorder the conversation is about members of the military, about those whom we unfortunately expect to have experienced the horrors of war but increasingly the United States is sending civilian employees, diplomats, intelligence analysts, reconstruction specialists, contract administrators, not just to hardship posts but into actual combat zones, and then expecting them to do their usual jobs but under extraordinary and perilous conditions. So it should not be any surprise that those who are now returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are returning not only with exotic souvenirs but with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) as well"-- From publisher’s website.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When soldiers go to war, what do their families and friends experience? There is huge public support for the military, who risk their lives in faraway war zones, but do we really have any idea what their ‘nearest and dearest’ go through while the troops are away? This book started out as a diary of a year in the life of Stephen Wynn, a police officer who happens to have two sons in the military. The diary was his mechanism for coping with the passion, distress and rage he felt while his sons - Luke and Ross - were on active service in Afghanistan. Two Sons in a War Zone is his compelling true story, illustrating the raw inner conflict between one man’s pride for his sons and their chosen profession, and his natural fears for their safety. In vivid, everyday language he describes the intense experiences - the joys and sorrows - of being a ‘loved one’ at home, whilst his sons battle a deadly foe in gruelling and treacherous conditions. Stephen describes Luke’s and Ross’s personal stories - why they joined the military and how they relate to the work - and quotes from private letters and documents. Both sons are injured whilst on their first tour of duty (one narrowly escaping serious harm from a bullet wound) but thankfully they return safely home. Nobody reading this book will have any doubt about the sacrifices made by soldiers who go to war, as well as the anguish their loved ones experience at home. ‘I promised myself that I would not hide my feelings from anyone. I would not be wilfully ignorant of the risks my sons were facing out there. Though they were men, to me they were still boys, and they would be facing boys like themselves; boys, and men younger than me, who would shoot at them. Knowing this, how would I get through a single day? Would I have to bottle up how I felt? No, I’d be open, and honest...’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the title story of this collection, detective Willie Cuesta is on a stakeout in a singles bar, tracking an errant husband, when he gets a call about a potential case. The next day, he meets Isabel Guevara, who is originally from Nicaragua. Her twin sons fought on opposite sides of that country’s civil war; one in the army, the other with the contra rebels. They both survived, but their feud didn’t end with the conflict. And now, word has it that the one who remained behind is on his way to Miami to kill his brother! Willie has no idea how he will prevent a bloody confrontation, but he agrees to try. This collection of twelve stories featuring private investigator Willie Cuesta illuminates the histories and issues of the numerous Latin American communities that call Miami home—and how the past continues to haunt them. There’s a family concerned that their mother’s new fiance isn’t the former Cuban political prisoner and hero he claims to be; a heavily tattooed Salvadoran gang member in hiding from the vicious former colleagues hunting him; a beautiful Haitian woman being stalked by a killer who uses voodoo to stoke her nightmares; and a wealthy American who made his fortune in Guatemala on the backs of its people and is now receiving death threats from his victims! The impact of civil war, revolution, corruption and criminal violence crash ashore in these stories set in South Florida. Whether Willie is doing surveillance in salsa clubs, interviewing clients over cafecitos in Little Havana or on a fishing boat in the Gulf, his attempts to find justice for clients are always enlightening and exciting. An Edgar Award finalist and Shamus Award nominee, John Lantigua served as a foreign correspondent in Latin America, and his investigator, a former Miami Police Department detective, appears in a series of stand-alone novels.
