These essays articulate the critical and liberating consciousness shared by oppressed peoples across the world, arising from a faith in the God of the oppressed, expressed in radically diverse ways, and resisting the imperialist deities of materialism (read: economic growth), racism, and militarization that falsely appear as the saviors of humanity. The authors confront these false gods--which form the modern empire--worshiped by the most dominant militarized states in the world and followed by their allied states even in the midst of a worldwide pandemic. Out of the eleven articles, two are written by critical political analysts with an anti-colonial lens while recognizing the importance of faith in resistance. The rest are written by theologians who critically reflect on their faith within the context of empire and militarization in their societies. Militarization is among the most brutal forms of oppression on the resisting peoples. The theologies that have emerged from critical reflections on their collective experiences are grounded on a material spirituality as opposed to materialistic, racist, and militaristic godlessness. This collection has emerged out of creative and transformative practices in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific, and the US. He deftly works his way through the key points of a confusing history that ultimately leads to US and international engagement in the area. Later in the book, he provides an excellent summary of the Bosnia and Kosovo regions and the consequent US presence there. This background information is very helpful in understanding the crucial nature of chaplain ministry, because much of the Balkans conflict is related to religious issues. Chaplain Lawson's use of personal Army chaplain and chaplain assistant accounts makes up the bulk of the work. His use of quotes, stories, written accounts, and personal observations provides a broad look at religious ministry in this relatively new Army environment--an environment of peacekeeping and multinational, joint-service coordination. He points out that the religious support in the Balkans conflict was also a period in which the Army had to use the Reserve components (Army National Guard and Army Reserve) in a significant way.

Hassner proposes that religion acts as a force multiplier, both enabling and constraining military operations. This is true not only for religiously radicalized fighters but also for professional soldiers. In the last century, religion has influenced modern militaries in the timing of attacks, the selection of targets for assault, the zeal with which units execute their mission, and the ability of individual soldiers to face the challenge of war. Religious ideas have not provided the reasons why conventional militaries fight, but religious practices have influenced their ability to do so effectively. In Religion on the Battlefield, Hassner focuses on the everyday practice of religion in a military context: the prayers, rituals, fasts, and feasts of the religious practitioners who make up the bulk of the adversaries, bystanders, and observers during armed conflicts. To show that religious practices have influenced battlefield decision making, Hassner draws most of his examples from major wars involving Western militaries. They include British soldiers in the trenches of World War I, U.S. pilots in World War II, and U.S. Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hassner shows that even modern, rational, and bureaucratized military organizations have taken—and must take—religious practice into account in the conduct of war.

They can enthrall some people who hold them doggedly, contaminating such guardians as well as those around them. One such case epitomizes how a sentinel can both hold beliefs and become held by them, a prime example of the unique relationship between beliefs gone rogue and the severe consequences that can ensue from mindless tenacity. Probably no beliefs are more deeply or faithfully held than religious beliefs. More than just influential, religious beliefs can be crucial in the lives of many people. And because they can determine both the nature and extent of conviction, religious beliefs can range in their effect from material to manic. Looking but not seeing. Riveting beliefs. Become crippling. Victimizing. That was JD, contaminated by fervor. Overwhelmed by religious beliefs that he could neither uphold nor disclaim created a dilemma for JD that took away his mental health and replaced it with mental illness. His struggle to find peace of mind was grueling, also contagious. So those around him who inadvertently caught the bug experienced much of the stigma that JD faced. JD was the victim not only of mental illness but also of the obsessive need of his attending psychiatrist to discover a bond between immanent beliefs and conspicuous pathology. In juxtaposition and in conflict with the attending was the chief of staff, who saw his vital duty as essentially the rendering of psychiatric service over any research mandate. The clash of egos and objectives that defined the aspirations of the two psychiatrists hindered JDs return to mental health. Still, in spite of cruel circumstance and after numerous traumatic events in house, JD finally benefitted from a change in psychiatrists. On the road to recovery, JD learned that he was, in a sense, crazy about God. What irony, he thought. Because it was that oddity that led him to understand how beliefs we hold . . . can hold us and, coincidentally, how he was initially seized by the intractable imperative. Inevitably and paradoxically, he had to give some credit to the gods of his imagination for bringing him down to earth. In a final reconciliation with divinity, he realizes that neither the Divine Comedy nor a divine tragedy had the ability to touch his soul, cater to his spirit, or fulfill his needs. It was, instead, a divine remedynot simply a matter of freeing himself of beliefs but, rather, of holding beliefs that are freeing.
