Book Synopsis The Poetry of Shell Shock by : Daniel Hipp
Download or read book The Poetry of Shell Shock written by Daniel Hipp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British poets Wilfred Owen, Ivor Gurney, and Siegfried Sassoon found themselves psychologically altered by what they experienced in the First World War. Owen was hospitalized in April 1917 for "shell shock" in Scotland, where he met Siegfried Sassoon in June of that year, hospitalized for the same affliction. Ivor Gurney found the war, ironically, to have been a place of relative stability within an otherwise tormented life; When he was wounded during the war's final year, his doctors observed signs of mental illness, which evolved into incapacitating psychosis by 1922. For each of these men--all poets before the war--poetry served as a way to inscribe continuity into their lives, enabling them to retaliate against the war's propensity to render the lives of the participants discontinuous. Poetry allowed them to return to the war through memory and imagination, and poetry helped them to bring themselves back from psychological breakdown to a state of stability, based upon a relationship to the war that their literary war enabled them to create and discover. This work investigates the ways in which the poetry of war functioned as a means for these three men to express the inexpressible and to extract value out of the experience of war. Bibliography and index are also included. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

Book Synopsis Medicine in First World War Europe by : Fiona Reid
Download or read book Medicine in First World War Europe written by Fiona Reid and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The casualty rates of the First World War were unprecedented: approximately 10 million combatants were wounded from Britain, France and Germany alone. In consequence, military-medical services expanded and the war ensured that medical professionals became firmly embedded within the armed services. In a situation of total war civilians on the home front came into more contact than before with medical professionals, and even pacifists played a significant medical role. Medicine in First World War Europe re-visits the casualty clearing stations and the hospitals of the First World War, and tells the stories of those who were most directly involved: doctors, nurses, wounded men and their families. Fiona Reid explains how military medicine interacts with the concerns, the cultures and the behaviours of the civilian world, treating the history of wartime military medicine as an integral part of the wider social and cultural history of the First World War.
Book Synopsis Mental diseases: a public health problem by : James Vance May
Download or read book Mental diseases: a public health problem written by James Vance May and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a concise elaboration of the origin of various psychoses generally accepted by American psychiatrists with an aim to shed light on the efforts that led up to the developments at that period. The author of this work, James Vance May (1873–1947), was an American psychiatrist and an early proponent for statistical studies and the classification of mental diseases. He was among the first to recognize mental illness as a public health issue, an opinion that did not attain recognition and acceptance for many years. The author has attempted to limit himself to reflect the views of others and has used authentic citations from acknowledged authorities. The conclusions in this work are entirely based on facts rather than on conceptual theories or personal observations alone. The social, financial, and clinical factors of mental diseases must all be given serious consideration according to the author if psychiatry has to satisfy its commitment to the community and take a dignified role in advancing modern medicine.

Book Synopsis The Testimonies of Indian Soldiers and the Two World Wars by : Gajendra Singh
Download or read book The Testimonies of Indian Soldiers and the Two World Wars written by Gajendra Singh and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two World Wars, hundreds of thousands of Indian sepoys were mobilized, recruited and shipped overseas to fight for the British Crown. The Indian Army was the chief Imperial reserve for an empire under threat. But how did those sepoys understand and explain their own war experiences and indeed themselves through that experience? How much did their testimonies realise and reflect their own fragmented identities as both colonial subjects and imperial policemen? The Testimonies of Indian Soldiers and the Two World Wars draws upon the accounts of Indian combatants to explore how they came to terms with the conflicts. In thematic chapters, Gajendra Singh traces the evolution of military identities under the British Raj and considers how those identities became embattled in the praxis of soldiers' war testimonies – chiefly letters, depositions and interrogations. It becomes a story of mutiny and obedience; of horror, loss and silence. This book tells that story and is an important contribution to histories of the British Empire, South Asia and the two World Wars.
Book Synopsis The Harmony of Illusions by : Allan Young
Download or read book The Harmony of Illusions written by Allan Young and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1997-10-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As far back as we know, there have been individuals incapacitated by memories that have filled them with sadness and remorse, fright and horror, or a sense of irreparable loss. Only recently, however, have people tormented with such recollections been diagnosed as suffering from "post-traumatic stress disorder." Here Allan Young traces this malady, particularly as it is suffered by Vietnam veterans, to its beginnings in the emergence of ideas about the unconscious mind and to earlier manifestations of traumatic memory like shell shock or traumatic hysteria. In Young's view, PTSD is not a timeless or universal phenomenon newly discovered. Rather, it is a "harmony of illusions," a cultural product gradually put together by the practices, technologies, and narratives with which it is diagnosed, studied, and treated and by the various interests, institutions, and moral arguments mobilizing these efforts. This book is part history and part ethnography, and it includes a detailed account of everyday life in the treatment of Vietnam veterans with PTSD. To illustrate his points, Young presents a number of fascinating transcripts of the group therapy and diagnostic sessions that he observed firsthand over a period of two years. Through his comments and the transcripts themselves, the reader becomes familiar with the individual hospital personnel and clients and their struggle to make sense of life after a tragic war. One observes that everyone on the unit is heavily invested in the PTSD diagnosis: boundaries between therapist and patient are as unclear as were the distinctions between victim and victimizer in the jungles of Southeast Asia.

Book Synopsis Reconstructing the Body by : Ana Carden-Coyne
Download or read book Reconstructing the Body written by Ana Carden-Coyne and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First World War mangled faces, blew away limbs, and ruined nerves. Ten million dead, twenty million severe casualties, and eight million people with permanent disabilities - modern war inflicted pain and suffering with unsparing, mechanical efficiency. However, such horror was not the entire story. People also rebuilt their lives, their communities, and their bodies. From the ashes of war rose beauty, eroticism, and the promise of utopia. Ana Carden-Coyne investigates the cultures of resilience and the institutions of reconstruction in Britain, Australia, and the United States. Immersed in efforts to heal the consequences of violence and triumph over adversity, reconstruction inspired politicians, professionals, and individuals to transform themselves and their societies. Bodies were not to remain locked away as tortured memories. Instead, they became the subjects of outspoken debate, the objects of rehabilitation, and commodities of desire in global industries. Governments, physicians, beauty and body therapists, monument designers and visual artists looked to classicism and modernism as the tools for rebuilding civilization and its citizens. What better response to loss of life, limb, and mind than a body reconstructed?
