Book Synopsis Fortress California, 1910-1961 by : Roger W. Lotchin
Download or read book Fortress California, 1910-1961 written by Roger W. Lotchin and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fortress California, now in paperback for the first time, links the growth of the U.S. military-industrial complex to civic leaders who competed for military bases and military contracts to ensure economic growth. Analyzing the growth of Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco from 1910 to 1961, Roger W. Lotchin discredits the assumption that the industrialization of the Sunbelt was a result of a partnership between industry and the military. He provides instead a detailed and forceful argument that municipalities used federal resources to build urban empires and metropolitan-military complexes. These have increased the flow of federal dollars into the state, thereby shifting the focus of the military-industrial complex from warfare to welfare.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Smog in Southern California by : Jeffry Fawcett
Download or read book The Political Economy of Smog in Southern California written by Jeffry Fawcett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, first published in 1990, explores the ways in which institutions can succeed or fail at environmental improvement. The author first takes a look at the nature of environmental politics and the history of air pollution control in Southern California. He then develops a political economic model that asks the question: what effect have the dramatic changes that have occurred throughout the history of air pollution control in Southern California had on air quality? Jeffry Fawcett uses the information gathered to both evaluate the relationship between air quality and institutional change; and to evaluate how political economists explain how state environmental institutions work. This title will be of interest to students of environmental economics and policy.

Book excerpt: An expert craftsmanship of sports journalism and a powerful statement about the business of sports and economy. Certain character depictions are fictitious to convey the utter seriousness of a sport's specification where the ownerships of Champcar waged a boycott against IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Otherwise, "oil and gas" is a tightening up of economic realities, the real people on the verge of a financial takeover and how such economies work in relation to Major Leagues Sports in historically speaking the most productive times in U.S. economy. The Heists are back and Phil Elmach driving for James Sedgwick. Only in "oil and gas," Elmach joins Jake Coote and the experts in the Sunshine State. Turbochargers made the stealthiest cars, and successively IndyCar's resolution of a sport's escalation costs. To the supercops, the top outfits in the Champcar-IndyCar merger war pose a threat in a downturn economy and the owner-teams recognize that tires aren't the only switch-ups, but teams transferring into IndyCar. In the shuffle of cash, egos, and clashes, everyone gets caught to the comic drama of staying steps ahead of a supercop. In the chase, the story distinguishes myth from the legendary figures. Miles Deere's epic battles fit the grand schemes. Ground effects sold on American March know-how was a version of Desert Storm on neighboring Area 51 and runs open wheel cars in excess of constructor rules. The Heists have nabbed the technology, or at least former American March Jake Coote as advisor-teammate to Elmach's own answers.

Book Synopsis Texas vs. California by : Kenneth P. Miller
Download or read book Texas vs. California written by Kenneth P. Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas and California are the leaders of Red and Blue America. As the nation has polarized, its most populous and economically powerful states have taken charge of the opposing camps. These states now advance sharply contrasting political and policy agendas and view themselves as competitors for control of the nation's future. Kenneth P. Miller provides a detailed account of the rivalry's emergence, present state, and possible future. First, he explores why, despite their many similarities, the two states have become so deeply divided. As he shows, they experienced critical differences in their origins and in their later demographic, economic, cultural, and political development. Second, he describes how Texas and California have constructed opposing, comprehensive policy models--one conservative, the other progressive. Miller highlights the states' contrasting policies in five areas--tax, labor, energy and environment, poverty, and social issues--and also shows how Texas and California have led the red and blue state blocs in seeking to influence federal policy in these areas. The book concludes by assessing two models' strengths, vulnerabilities, and future prospects. The rivalry between the two states will likely continue for the foreseeable future, because California will surely stay blue and Texas will likely remain red. The challenge for the two states, and for the nation as a whole, is to view the competition in a positive light and turn it to productive ends. Exploring one of the primary rifts in American politics, Texas vs. California sheds light on virtually every aspect of the country's political system.
Book Synopsis Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left by : Laura Pulido
Download or read book Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left written by Laura Pulido and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Pulido traces the roots of third world radicalism in Southern California during the 1960s and 1970s in this accessible, wonderfully illustrated comparative study. Focusing on the Black Panther Party, El Centro de Acción Social y Autonomo (CASA), and East Wind, a Japanese American collective, she explores how these African American, Chicana/o, and Japanese American groups sought to realize their ideas about race and class, gender relations, and multiracial alliances. Based on thorough research as well as extensive interviews, Black, Brown, Yellow, and Left explores the differences and similarities between these organizations, the strengths and weaknesses of the third world left as a whole, and the ways that differential racialization led to distinct forms of radical politics. Pulido provides a masterly, nuanced analysis of complex political events, organizations, and experiences. She gives special prominence to multiracial activism and includes an engaging account of where the activists are today, together with a consideration of the implications for contemporary social justice organizing.
