Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Pictures Behind the Lines My grateful thanks are due to so many people who, consciously or otherwise, have provided me with material for my book that I can only acknowledge my debt, in one comprehensive phrase, to all my French and English friends for the valuable assistance that they have given me. Especially, however, are my thanks due to the Chairman of the British Red Cross Society, by whose permission I am enabled to include Chapters IV and V which deal in detail with one aspect of our Red Cross work, and to those French artists who have so courteously allowed me to reproduce their admirable pictures in this volume. Book excerpt: Television footage and reportage photography relayed the American-Vietnam war from the remote jungles of Southeast Asia into the sitting rooms of ordinary people living thousands of miles from the battle zones. For the first time in history, a major civilian audience was able to monitor military operations on the other side of the world from the comfort of their armchairs. Tremendous numbers of people lost their lives in the conflict, and the social, economic and political effects of the war will continue to be felt for decades to come. This fully color-illustrated catalogue presents another aspect of the conflict, as seen by Vietnamese artists who created these images of war from behind the lines. Included are 130 works on paper, ranging from sketches on cardbard to paintings on traditional Vietnamese rice paper. Watercolors, pen and ink sketches, pencil drawings, chalk designs, ink paintings and acrylics are all represented in this unique archive, the first to be acquired for a public collection outside Vietnam. Some of the artists were engaged in the creation of propaganda material for the government and others were recording the war, but some were simply exercising their creative talents for the sheer pleasure of it.This catalogue accompanies the exhibition at the British Museum from June 13 to September 22, 2002.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 110,000 soldiers of the Union and Confederate armies fought along the banks of Antietam Creek in the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. In 12 hours of fighting, approximately 23,000 men fell, either killed, wounded, or missing, forever scarring the landscape around the town of Sharpsburg. Established as the Antietam Battlefield Site in 1890, Antietam National Battlefield became a National Park Service landmark in 1933. The park grew from 33 acres in the 1890s to encompassing over 3,000 acres today. Some of the Civil War's most recognizable landmarks now sit within its boundaries, including Dunker Church, Bloody Lane, and Burnside Bridge. The events that occurred across the fields and woodlots around Sharpsburg and along Antietam Creek bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to Antietam National Battlefield every year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Vietnam War changed American art By the late 1960s, the United States was in a pitched conflict in Vietnam, against a foreign enemy, and at home—between Americans for and against the war and the status quo. This powerful book showcases how American artists responded to the war, spanning the period from Lyndon B. Johnson’s fateful decision to deploy U.S. Marines to South Vietnam in 1965 to the fall of Saigon ten years later. Artists Respond brings together works by many of the most visionary and provocative artists of the period, including Asco, Chris Burden, Judy Chicago, Corita Kent, Leon Golub, David Hammons, Yoko Ono, and Nancy Spero. It explores how the moral urgency of the Vietnam War galvanized American artists in unprecedented ways, challenging them to reimagine the purpose and uses of art and compelling them to become politically engaged on other fronts, such as feminism and civil rights. The book presents an era in which artists struggled to synthesize the turbulent times and participated in a process of free and open questioning inherent to American civic life. Beautifully illustrated, Artists Respond features a broad range of art, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, performance and body art, installation, documentary cinema and photography, and conceptualism. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countering the powerful myth that the civil war in Russia was largely between the "Whites" and the "Reds," Vladimir Brovkin views the struggle as a multifaceted social and political process. Brovkin focuses not so much on armies and governments as on the interaction of state institutions, political parties, and social movements on both Red and White territories. In the process, he exposes the weaknesses of the various warring factions in a Russia plagued by strikes, mutinies, desertion, and rebellions. The Whites benefited from popular resistance to the Reds, and the Reds, from resistance to the Whites. In Brovkin's view, neither regime enjoyed popular support. Pacification campaigns, mass shooting, deportations, artillery shelling of villages, and terror were the essence of the conflict, and when the Whites were defeated, the war against the Greens, the peasant rebels, went on. Drawing on a remarkable array of previously untapped sources, Brovkin convicts the early Bolsheviks of crimes similar to those later committed by Stalin. What emerges "behind the front lines" is a picture of how diverse forces—Cossacks, Ukrainians, Greens, Mensheviks, and SRs, as well as Whites and Bolsheviks—created the tragic victory of a party that had no majority support. This book has important contemporary implications as the world again asks an old question: Can Russian statehood prevail over local, regional, and national identities? Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his remarkable photographs, few people are aware of Francis Browne's astonishing war record. Joining the British Army as a Chaplain in 1916, he served for most of the war with the Irish Guards, ministering to the troops at the Somme, Messines Ridge, Paschendaele, Ypres, Amiens, and Arras. Determined to stay at the front with his men, he was wounded five times, starting with a broken jaw in 1916, and was gassed in 1918. Each time he returned to war as soon as his senior officers would let him. His commanding officer described Fr Browne as "the bravest man I ever met". He was awarded the Military Cross with Bar, the Belgian Croix de Guerre (First Class), and the French Croix de Guerre (with Palm). Eddie O'Donnell SJ has written a fascinating account of Father Browne's war experiences, brought vividly to life with extracts from his letters, and illustrated throughout with photographs taken by Father Browne during the war.
