Everything quiet. Visited the hospitals to see our wounded boys; some may get over it, but I fear many will die. May 28. Heavy cannonading all along the whole line. The 'rebs reply but feebly; they will not have much chance to rest. May 29. Worked all night on a fort for Major Powell's Battery; as the position is too much exposed for work in day time, it has to be done at night. May 30. Tremendous cannonading early this morning. I have never heard anything to equal it. It seems to be Grant's tactics to keep the Rebs busy all the time. There must have been over a hundred guns firing at once. May 31. AS corps officer of the day, I was up all night. Visited the different posts where men had been stationed as pickets. Made some suggestions to headquarters which were complied With. Monday, June 1. Weather very warm. Men engaged in building roads through the ravines to connect the different camps. Our rations are now all right, getting them by steamer from the North to Yazoo River, and then team ing them across Chickasaw Bayou to our camps. Men in good spirits and prefer the spade and pick to charging breastworks. June 2. A large fire in Vicksburg last night. An attack was made on our left, but easily repulsed. The city occupied a strategic and commanding position atop rocky cliffs above the Mississippi River, from which it controlled the great waterway. As a result, Federal forces expended enormous effort, expense, and troops in many attempts to capture Vicksburg. The immense struggle for this southern bastion ultimately heightened its importance beyond its physical and strategic value. Its psychological significance elevated the town’s status to one of the war’s most important locations. Vicksburg’s defiance dismayed northerners and delighted Confederates, who saw command of the river as a badge of honor. Finally, after a six-week siege that involved intense military and civilian suffering amid heavy artillery bombardment, Union forces captured the “Gibraltar of the Confederacy,” ending the bloody campaign. While many historians have told the story of the fall of Vicksburg, Bradley R. Boomer, a little-known bridge builder and combat veteran who served in the Civil War of the United States. He was the son of a Baptist minister from Sutton, Massachusetts, who struggled with his Christian faith while searching for God's plan for his life. While his formal education was limited by a youthful disability of the eyes, he became a self-taught master bridge builder who learned to speak multiple languages while living in the state of Missouri. However, he is most known for his skills as a military commander who received compliments from Ulysses S. Grant. Colonel Boomer was the commander of the Twenty-Sixth Missouri Regiment, and he served in the western theater of the war. He was actively involved in Pope's campaign against Island Number Ten, and he suffered severe wounds at the Battle of Iuka, Mississippi. His greatest military accomplishment occurred during the pivotal battle of Champion's Hill, and it is likely that the actions of his brigade were largely responsible for the Union victory. Boomer endured tragedies in his civilian life and his life in the military at the hands ambitious political figures who brought him great grief. However, he would ultimately find his life's meaning in a peach orchard just outside Vicksburg, Mississippi. His selfless actions saved the lives of many of the men under his command. His veteran sacrifice for his country needs to be remembered.
