Book excerpt: Our world is mired in chaos, disorder, and endless conflict. We have depleted the planet's natural resources to a point of scarcity. Wars now threaten to erupt over the dwindling remaining natural resources: fossil fuel, water, arable land, and rare-earth minerals. We have used the fear of mutual assured annihilation by destructive weapons to achieve a tenuous and shaky peace in the world. Our financial institutions are imploding as nations sink beneath oceans of debt. It is becoming clear that the entire model human civilization was built upon is flawed and destined to soon unravel. Our past is plain, the present is ambiguous, and our future remains uncertain. Sooner, or later, we're going to have to confront the very challenges that now threaten our survival on this planet. The clock is ticking, and we are running out of time to avert disaster. This is the second book in the Sparkle Series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New England Transcendentalism was a vibrant and many-sided movement whose members are probably best remembered for their utopian experiments, their attempts to reconcile the contingent world of history with what they perceived as the stable and patterned world of nature. Richard Francis has written the first book to explore in detail the ideological basis of the three famous experiments during the 1840s: Brook Farm, Fruitlands, and Henry David Thoreau's "community of one" on the shores of Walden Pond.Francis suggests that at the heart of Transcendentalism was a belief that all phenomena are connected in a repetitive sequence. The task was to explain how human society could be reordered to benefit from this seriality. Some members of the movement believed in evolutionary progress, whereas others hoped to be the agents of a sudden millennial transformation. They differed, as well, in their views as to whether the fundamental social unit was the individual, the family, the phalanstery, or the community. The story of the three communities was, inevitably, also the story of particular individuals, and Francis highlights the lives and ideas of such leaders as George Ripley, W. H. Channing, Bronson Alcott, Charles Lane, and Theodore Parker. The consistent underlying beliefs of the New England Transcendentalists have exerted a powerful influence on American intellectual and cultural history ever since.

Book excerpt: BONUS: This edition contains a new Afterword and a reading group guide. Utopia, Texas: It’s either the best place on earth, or it’s no place at all. In the twenty-first century, it’s difficult to imagine any element of American life that remains untouched by popular culture, let alone an entire community existing outside the empire of pop. But Karen Valby discovered the tiny town of Utopia tucked away in the Texas Hill Country. There are no movie theaters for sixty miles in any direction, no book or music stores. But cable television and the Internet have recently thrown wide the doors of Utopia. Valby follows the lives of four Utopians—Ralph, the retired owner of the general store; Kathy, the waitress who waits in terror for three of her boys to return from war; Colter, the son of a cowboy with the soul of a hipster; and Kelli, an aspiring rock star and one of the only black people in town—as they reckon, on an intensely human scale, with war and race, class and culture, and the way time’s passage can change the ground beneath our feet. Utopia is the kind of place we still think of as the “real America,” a place of cowboys and farmers and high-school sweethearts who stay together till they die. But its dramatic stories show us what happens when the old tensions of small-town life confront a new reality: that no town, no matter how small and isolated, can escape the liberating and disruptive forces of the larger world. Welcome to Utopia is a moving elegy for a proud American way of life and a celebration of our relentless impulse toward rebirth.

Book excerpt: In 2005, J.C. Hallman came across a scientific paper about "Pleistocene Rewilding," a peculiar idea from conservation biology that suggested repopulating bereft ecosystems with endangered "megafauna." The plan sounded utterly utopian, but Hallman liked the idea as much as the scientists did—perhaps because he had grown up on a street called Utopia Road in a master-planned community in Southern California. Pleistocene Rewilding rekindled in him a longstanding fascination with utopian ideas, and he went on to spend three weeks at the world's oldest "intentional community," sail on the first ship where it's possible to own "real estate," train at the world's largest civilian combat-school, and tour a $30 billion megacity built from scratch on an artificial island off the coast of Korea. In Utopia explores the history of utopian literature and thought in the narrative context of the real-life fruits of that history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "A Modern Utopia (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. A Modern Utopia is presented as a tale told by a sketchily described character known only as the Owner of the Voice. This character "is not to be taken as the Voice of the ostensible author who fathers these pages," Wells warns. He is accompanied by another character known as "the botanist." Interspersed in the narrative are discursive remarks on various matters, creating what Wells called in his preface "a sort of shot-silk texture between philosophical discussion on the one hand and imaginative narrative on the other." Because of the complexity and sophistication of its narrative structure, H.G. Wells's A Modern Utopia has been called "not so much a modern as a postmodern utopia." The novel is best known for its notion that a voluntary order of nobility known as the Samurai could effectively rule a "kinetic and not static" world state so as to solve "the problem of combining progress with political stability." Herbert George Wells (1866-1946), known as H. G. Wells, was a prolific English writer in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, and social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games.

Book excerpt: "At periodic intervals during historical or literary analysis a new theory arises that forces a re-evaluation of long-held opinions. That Utopia is factual not fictional is one such theory." "Perhaps because More's text was written before Mexico was 'officially' discovered no previous study of Utopia has attempted to establish a factual New World basis for this ideal state. Here, Lorainne Stobbart seeks to argue that the Maya of Central America provided that basis and, in doing so, she compels the reader to examine both the unquestioning acceptance of official historic dating and the possible motives and reasons for accepting Utopia as a fictional work for over four hundred and fifty years." "The author investigates the remarkably large number of features both societies shared, including similarities in local government, religion, social customs, trade and urban life, leading to the conclusion that More did, indeed, have access to information on Mayan life and culture." "Many scholars in both historical and literary circles may find themselves disagreeing with this controversial work, but they will, like future analysts, find it difficult to ignore."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Ever since Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, writers and reformers have been inspired to create fictional or experimental utopias. The former may be serious as was Plato’s Republic or satires as Erewhon by Samuel Butler. The latter may be one-man utopias such as Thoreau at Walden Pond or continental reverse utopias (dystopias) such as the former Soviet Union. Utopias may stress technology as did the New Atlantis of Francis Bacon or resist technology as did the Islandia of Austin T. Wright. They may be sexually promiscuous as was the Brave New World of Huxley or extremely puritanical as were the Shaker communities. While they may appear frivolous they represent man’s desire to “dream the impossible dream.” They can show us the flaws in our present socioeconomic system and point to more prosperous and just systems in the future. They may, in the words of Lewis Mumford, be utopias of escape or utopias of reconstruction. In any case, fasten your seat belts and enjoy the trip of your life!
