Book excerpt: Hope for those up-against-the-wall moments in your life The secrets to overcoming any obstacle you are facing today are revealed through one of the most extraordinary victories ever recorded—the battle of Jericho. Whatever walls you may be up against, you don’t have to stay stuck behind them. Enlightening and encouraging, Walls Fall Down tells how Joshua and the Israelites followed God’s unusual plan to walk around the heavily fortified walls of Jericho for seven days. The Lord promised that at end of those seven days, He would cause the walls of the famed city to fall, allowing His people to take possession of the Promised Land. Seven spiritual principles are in this story, and they are available to you today. Join pastor Dudley Rutherford on a seven-day journey to discover how the foundation behind Joshua’s victory is the key to overcoming our stubborn hurdles and unsolvable issues. When we choose to do things God’s way, walls crumble, victory replaces defeat, and a blessed future unfolds. Discover how your personal Jericho is no match for the power of a great God.

Book excerpt: Is reconciliation possible? In his groundbreaking book, Walls Can Fall, Kenneth C. Ulmer explored the topic of race from a biblical perspective. Although the book recounted Ulmer's challenging, sometimes personal, and often painful journey into the reality of racism, he cast a positive vision that, in fact, the walls that divide the races can fall. In this accompanying study guide, Ulmer guides readers toward reflection on the biblical principles addressed in Walls Can Fall, and offers practical steps to make a difference in their individual spheres of influence, so they can become not merely hearers of the word of God, but doers.

Through practical insights and inspiring stories about people who “broke through” a wall in their spiritual life, Ryan guides you through understanding, facing up to, and breaking through the walls that are holding you back. Book excerpt: Technological evolution and revolution are both driven by the discovery of new functionalities, new materials and the design of yet smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient components. Progress is being made at a breathtaking pace, stimulated by the rapidly growing demand for more powerful and readily available information technology. High-speed internet and data-streaming, home automation, tablets and smartphones are now "necessities" for our everyday lives. Consumer expectations for progressively more data storage and exchange appear to be insatiable. Oxide electronics is a promising and relatively new field that has the potential to trigger major advances in information technology. Oxide interfaces are particularly intriguing. Here, low local symmetry combined with an increased susceptibility to external fields leads to unusual physical properties distinct from those of the homogeneous bulk. In this context, ferroic domain walls have attracted recent attention as a completely new type of oxide interface. In addition to their functional properties, such walls are spatially mobile and can be created, moved, and erased on demand. This unique degree of flexibility enables domain walls to take an active role in future devices and hold a great potential as multifunctional 2D systems for nanoelectronics. With domain walls as reconfigurable electronic 2D components, a new generation of adaptive nano-technology and flexible circuitry becomes possible, that can be altered and upgraded throughout the lifetime of the device. Thus, what started out as fundamental research, at the limit of accessibility, is finally maturing into a promising concept for next-generation technology.

Book excerpt: She’s an FBI Special Agent and Modoc Indian. He’s a Bureau of Indian Affairs Investigator and Comanche. Together, Anna Turnipseed and Emmett Parker have proven to be “a memorable literary pair” (Publishers Weekly). Now, they’re called upon to tackle a case thousands of miles from their home-sweet-home on the range... On the New York reservation of the Oneida, the team finds the broken body of Brenda Two Kettles, a community elder, in a cornfield. From what Turnipseed and Parker can see, she wasn’t attacked. Instead, it seems Ms. Two Kettles—much like the woman in the Oneida creation myth—simply fell out of sky. But it’s a land dispute that has claimed Ms. Two Kettles’ life—one that threatens to ground Turnipseed and Parker in facts far stranger than fiction...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stella Tęsknota was ready to marry Blake Yourrick, the troubled if earnest protagonist of Infinite Regress. In this stand-alone novel (and loose sequel), set after Blake abruptly—and inexplicably—breaks off their engagement, Stella throws herself into a tough South Chicago teaching assignment. There she meets Peter Clavier (P.C.), a psychologist-activist whose uncle—a pastor—has long prophesied for Peter a future of otherworldly greatness. As Stella draws out Peter’s past, the novel follows P.C. 's trajectory from a Cabrini-Green childhood to surreal stardom in the orbit of underwritten radical politics. When his boss offers Peter a marquee microphone and he moves to D.C., Stella returns home to Milwaukee in search of steady ground. She finds her self-sacrificing father hosting basement meetings that mix nostalgia and conspiracy. In the confluence of comfort and catastrophe, Stella is invited to wager on faith. Written with a style and sensibility that have been compared to David Foster Wallace and Dostoevsky, James Joyce and Saul Bellow, Blue Walls Falling Down chronicles the eternal questions that agitate our subterranean frequencies and demand more than the human spirit can give or answer alone.

Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book excerpt: Stone walls, concrete walls, chain-link walls, border walls: we live in a world of walls. Walls mark sacred space and embody earthly power. They maintain peace and cause war. They enforce separation and create unity. They express identity and build community. Yard to nation, city to self, walls define and dissect our lives. And, for Thomas Oles, it is time to broaden our ideas of what they can—and must—do. In Walls, Oles shows how our minds and our politics are shaped by–and shape–our divisions in the landscape. He traces the rich array of practices and meanings connected to the making and marking of boundaries across history and prehistory, and he describes how these practices have declined in recent centuries. The consequence, he argues, is all around us in the contemporary landscape, riven by walls shoddy in material and mean in spirit. Yet even today, Oles demonstrates, every wall remains potentially an opening, a stage, that critical place in the landscape where people present themselves and define their obligations to one another. In an evocative epilogue, Oles brings to life a society of productive, intentional, and ethical enclosure—one that will leave readers more hopeful about the divided landscapes of the future.
