Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines how major artists over the last five centuries have approached wallpaper design. From Durer, who conceived his designs as seriously as he did a fine woodcut, to William Morris, who believed that wallpaper, like all good design, should transform our lives, to Andy Warhol, whose fascination with multiple images inspired brilliant parodies of the wallpaper tradition, the artists represented here reveal the rich complexity inherent in the art of pattern and form that constitutes wallpaper design.

Book excerpt: Wallpaper’s spread across trades, class and gender is charted in this first full-length study of the material’s use in Britain during the long eighteenth century. It examines the types of wallpaper that were designed and produced and the interior spaces it occupied, from the country house to the homes of prosperous townsfolk and gentry, showing that wallpaper was hung by Earls and merchants as well as by aristocratic women. Drawing on a wide range of little known examples of interior schemes and surviving wallpapers, together with unpublished evidence from archives including letters and bills, it charts wallpaper’s evolution across the century from cheap textile imitation to innovative new decorative material. Wallpaper’s growth is considered not in terms of chronology, but rather alongside the categories used by eighteenth-century tradesmen and consumers, from plains to flocks, from China papers to papier mâché and from stucco papers to materials for creating print rooms. It ends by assessing the ways in which eighteenth-century wallpaper was used to create historicist interiors in the twentieth century. Including a wide range of illustrations, many in colour, the book will be of interest to historians of material culture and design, scholars of art and architectural history as well as practicing designers and those interested in the historic interior.

Book excerpt: We agonise and argue when choosing it; we admire, compliment and criticise it (or keep politely quiet about it); and the rest of the time we don't even notice it. Wallpaper has been the backdrop to our homes for hundreds of years. It can make a house feel cosy or trendy, modern or traditional, and it is one of the key elements of home décor through which to express personal taste. Despite the threat from plain-painted minimalism, wallpaper maintains a strong presence in modern domestic decoration. Zoë Hendon traces the history of wallpaper in Britain and its foremost designers, examining how social mobility and new technologies have influenced design trends. From early Chinoiserie, through William Morris and on to the 'feature wall', this book looks at wallpaper's surprisingly controversial place in shaping our sense of home.

Book excerpt: The first part of this book describes the development of the Georgian style, beginning with its introduction in the early eighteenth century in Britain and the colonies. In the 1740s, metropolitan areas on America's east coast, particularly the cities of Boston, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Alexandria, were beginning to show excellent examples of Georgian architecture. In the second part of the book, a chapter is devoted to each element of the house - roofs, stonework, brick, doors and windows, fireplaces, and moldings are examined, stressing the need for today's occupants to understand the ideas, techniques, and materials employed by the original builders. This book enables the preservationist, historian, architect, carpenter, and decorator to understand the craftsmanship and context of the Georgian house.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East India Company at Home, 1757–1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies.

Book excerpt: A richly illustrated, expansive mid-career survey of the stand-out American artist's pioneering and influential work, with each copy featuring a unique silk-screen cover printed in Owens's studio Since the early 1990s, Laura Owens (b. 1970) has challenged traditional assumptions about figuration and abstraction in her pioneering approach to painting. Created in close collaboration with the artist on the occasion of her mid-career survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art, this inventive and comprehensive book features an incisive introduction by Scott Rothkopf, critical essays, literary texts, and short commentaries on a variety of subjects related to Owens's broad interests, which range from folk art and needlework to comics and wallpaper. Reflections by more than twenty of Owens's fellow artists, collaborators, assistants, dealers, family members, and friends offer an array of perspectives on her work at different periods in her life, beginning with her high school years in Ohio and ending with her current exhibition. A rich trove of more than a thousand images, drawn from the artist's personal archive and largely unpublished before now, includes personal correspondence, journals, academic transcripts, handwritten notes, source material, exhibition announcements, clippings, and installation photographs. Strikingly, each copy also features a unique silk-screen cover printed in Owens's studio, giving readers the opportunity to own an original work of art. Together, all of these elements provide a rare and intimate look at how an artist might make her way in the world as well as how art gets made, movements take hold, and relationships evolve over time.

Book excerpt: The Georgian house - whether on a Georgetown street or in a leafy suburb- is considered among the most desireable and comfortable of homes. The Georgian style has stood the test of time, and continues to be popular today. Houses built over two hundred years ago still stand as proud and dignified as when they were first erected. The book describes the development of the Georgian style, beginning with its intro in the early 18th century up to the mid 19th century. Chapters are also devoted to each element of the house to help understand the ideas, techniques, and materials employed by the original builders. The most complete study of the historical development and importance of the Georgian style, this book is also a practical guide to preserving and restoring a Georgian house.
