Book Synopsis Yellow Perch, Walleye, and Sauger: Aspects of Ecology, Management, and Culture by : John Clay Bruner
Download or read book Yellow Perch, Walleye, and Sauger: Aspects of Ecology, Management, and Culture written by John Clay Bruner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walleye, one of the most sought-after species of freshwater sport fishes in North America, has demonstrated appreciable declines in their numbers from their original populations since the beginning of the 20th century. Similarly, Yellow Perch, once the most commonly caught sport fish and an important commercial species in North America, have also shown declines. Compiling up-to-date information on the biology and management of Walleye, Sauger, and Yellow Perch, including research on systematics, genetics, physiology, ecology, movement, population dynamics, culture, recent case histories, and management practices, will be of interest to managers, researchers, and students who deal with these important species, particularly in light of habitat alterations, population shifts, and other biotic and abiotic factors related to a changing climate.

Book Synopsis Management Science in Fisheries by : Charles T.T. Edwards
Download or read book Management Science in Fisheries written by Charles T.T. Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key goal of fisheries management is to regulate extractive pressure on a resource so as to ensure social, economic and ecological sustainability. This text provides an accessible entry point for students and professionals to management science as developed in fisheries, in order to facilitate uptake of the latest ideas and methods. Traditional management approaches have relied upon a stock assessment based on existing understanding of resource status and dynamics, and a prediction of the likely future response to a static management proposal. However all such predictions include an inherent degree of uncertainty, and the last few decades have seen the emergence of an adaptive approach that uses feedback control to account for unknown future behaviour. Feedback is achieved via a control rule, which defines a relationship between perceived status of the resource and a management action. Evaluations of such rules usually include computer simulation testing across a broad range of uncertainties, so that an appropriate and robust rule can be selected by stakeholders and managers. The book focuses on this approach, which is usually referred to as Management Strategy Evaluation. The book is enriched by case study examples from different parts of the world, as well as insights into the theory and practice from those actively involved in the science of fisheries management.

Book Synopsis The Global and the Local: An Environmental Ethics Casebook by : Dale Murray
Download or read book The Global and the Local: An Environmental Ethics Casebook written by Dale Murray and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Global and the Local: An Environmental Ethics Casebook, Dale Murray presents fifty-one actual, unique, and compelling case studies. The book covers a wide variety of environmental topics from those as global as overfishing, climate change, ocean acidification, and e-waste, to those topics as local as whether we should place salt on the driveway during winter, construct rain gardens, or believe we have a duty to hunt. The book also features an easy to read, yet rigorous introductory section exposing readers to ethical theories and approaches to environmental ethics. By interweaving these theoretical considerations into long and short case studies, Murray illuminates a comprehensive range of the most pressing environmental issues facing our biosphere both today and in the future.
