Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wallenstein's Camp Two tranlations of Wallenstein's Camp having already appeared - one by the late Earl of Ellesmere, the other by Mr. James Churchill in "Bohn's Standard Library" - this maiden - attempt is with great diffidence offered to the public. A lenient judgment is then expected; especially as it was undertaken to while away the dull hours of a monsoon, which in 1866 broke so heavily over the cantonments of Mhow, East Indies, as to cause a cessation of all, but ordinary, military duties, and to render leisure irksome without some appointed task. Wallenstein's Camp is a prelude to Schiller's "Piccolomini" and "Wallenstein's Death" and displays, as T. S. Coleridge - the successful translator of those renowned Dramas - says, "a lively picture of laxity of discipline and the mutinous dispositions of Wallenstein's soldiery." Book excerpt: "Wallenstein's Camp: A Play" by Friedrich Schiller reflects popular opinion, particularly that of the soldiers in Wallenstein's camp. They are enthusiastic about their commander, who to all appearances has managed to bring together mercenaries from a wide variety of locations. They praise the great freedom he allows them—to plunder, for instance—whenever they are not engaged in fighting, and his efforts on their behalf in negotiations with the Holy Roman Emperor, of whom some of the troops are critical. They also praise the war for improving their own lives despite its toll on the civilian population. Still, we hear a peasant complain that the troops steal from him, and a monk criticize their wicked life. At the end of this part, the soldiers find out that the emperor intends to place a section of the army under the command of Spanish Habsburgs. Unhappy, they agree to ask Max Piccolomini, one of their commanders, to urge Wallenstein not to fulfill the emperor's wishes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and dramatist. Schiller wrote many philosophical papers on ethics and aesthetics. He developed the concept of the Schone Seele (beautiful soul), a human being whose emotions have been educated by his reason, so that Pflicht und Neigung (duty and inclination) are no longer in conflict with one another; thus "beauty," for Schiller, is not merely a sensual experience, but a moral one as well: the Good is the Beautiful. His philosophical work was also particularly concerned with the question of human freedom, a preoccupation which also guided his historical researches. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright. Critics have noted his innovative use of dramatic structure and his creation of new forms, such as the melodrama and the bourgeois tragedy. Amongst his famous works are Love and Intrigue (1784), Don Carlos (1787), The Minister (1796), The Death of Wallenstein (1799), The Piccolomini (1800) and Mary Stuart (1800).
