Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walks and Talks About Boston Strangers have difficulty in finding their way about Boston on account of the irregularity of its streets. It will help if it is borne in mind that Boston, like New York, was formerly a peninsula and that Washington Street traverses it lengthwise as Broadway does New York. The North Station, which is the terminal for trains from the north and east, is near the northern end, which begins at Haymarket Square. Canal Street, leading out of Haymarket Square, ends at the North Station. Leading at right angles from Washington Street, Summer Street brings one to the South Terminal Station, where trains from the south and west arrive and depart. Winter Street, directly opposite Summer Street, leads to Tremont Street, which runs parallel with Washington Street, and to Boston Common. On the Common, at the head of Winter Street, may be found the Park Street Subway Station, where cars may be taken for any part of the city or suburbs, either directly or by transfer. Leading off Washington Street, at right angles, farther south, is Essex Street, which leads directly to the South Terminal Station. Opposite Essex Street is Boylston Street, which leads by the Common and Public Garden to the Back Bay District. The main line of the Tunnel and Elevated System runs under Washington Street from Forest Hills and Dudley Street to Sullivan Square, Charlestown, transferring at these points to surface cars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular History of Boston Some ten years ago the writer of this volume came to Boston, a stranger, for the purpose of reading in the Public Library and obtaining work as a journalist. Becoming deeply interested in works of local history, especially in those of Drake, and being unacquainted with society, he resolved to visit all the old historic places in and about Boston, in hours needed for exercise, and to study their associations. About a year ago the publishers asked him to prepare a young people's history of Boston, and to seek to make it popular and entertaining, after the methods of the Zig zag books. It was a pleasure to attempt this work, as it revived the memories of the solitary walks ten years ago, and brought into use the material then collected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Boston HE story of Old Boston can never be worn thread bare, although it has been told so often. It presents no new facts; the lanes and alleys of this ancient town are almost as well known as the walks around the State House or the old City Hall. One can almost see the quaint old houses at the North End, with their pretty gardens at the side, wherein our ancestors took so much pride and comfort; every foot of the old streets and noble Common has been tramped over and over where once were the footprints of the Puritans. No, there is nothing new in this subject; everything is old and moss-covered. But what is there that appeals with greater sympathy to the heart of the Bostonian of to-day than the places where our fathers lived, died and were buried? What better, purer and nobler thoughts can possibly pass through our minds than those which tell of the trials of that band of Puritans who asked only for freedom to worship God No one can doubt that our Puritan forefathers had much to contend with after leaving their native land and every thing they held dear. After suffering the most dreadful privations upon the ocean, they planted themselves on our wild and rugged shores, to seek that liberty of conscience they could not enjoy at home. The Englishman would do Old Boston exclusively. He had done the blend Of Old and New, and now would hark back to the Old and review it in leisurely strolls among its landmarks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Authentic and Comprehensive Guide and History of Boston Within twenty years, have been highly important, and have kept pace with the rapid progress of general musical education in civilized countries, especially in the United States, where elementary knowledge of music is taught gratuitously in the public schools. Thus a general taste for music is cultivated by a knowledge of it, and among us there has been exhibited quite a surprising proficiency in vocal and instrumental music. This general knowledge of and taste for music, has rapidly developed the manufacture of musical Instruments, increased competition, and stimulated the inventive powers of musical mechanical artists. Especially has this been the case in the manufacture of Piano-Fortes and Cabinet Organs, which in this country are made more perfectly than in any other, and are now largely exported to European and nearly all other foreign countries. In the march of improvement, the manufacturers of Cabinet Organs have outstripped even the makers of Piano-Fortes. This fact has been most emphatically and famously demonstrated by the superlative and pre-eminent excellence of the instruments produced by the great New England Organ Co., 1299 Washington Street, Boston, during the last seven years. Their career has been one unbroken round of triumphs, ever since their origin. They have originated, patented, and made widely renowned a greater number of and more important improvements, in the mechanism and cases, than all the other concerns combined, and have attained the foremost rank in a much shorter time than it was acquired in by any predecessors. Fortunately for that Company, they have retained exclusive control of their most important patented inventions, whose popularity in both worlds has secured to them an immense and steadily increasing traffic. With best machinery, materials, facilities, artists and artisans, most perfect system and discipline, in all departments of their model factory, through practical knowledge on the part of the proprietors, and a perpetual zeal for introducing new improvements, they have) accomplished more in seven years than any of their rivals effected in thrice that time. In this way every section of Boston's beautiful suburbs has been covered under the most favorable circumstances for a thorough knowledge of the country traversed. President Eliot of Harvard University has declared this to be the most interesting historical region in the United States, and one of the most beautiful here or in Europe, and he advises that all learn this whole region by heart.
