Book excerpt: "Body Physics was designed to meet the objectives of a one-term high school or freshman level course in physical science, typically designed to provide non-science majors and undeclared students with exposure to the most basic principles in physics while fulfilling a science-with-lab core requirement. The content level is aimed at students taking their first college science course, whether or not they are planning to major in science. However, with minor supplementation by other resources, such as OpenStax College Physics, this textbook could easily be used as the primary resource in 200-level introductory courses. Chapters that may be more appropriate for physics courses than for general science courses are noted with an asterisk symbol (*). Of course this textbook could be used to supplement other primary resources in any physics course covering mechanics and thermodynamics"--Textbook Web page.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Book of Breastfeeding is a recognized classic in its field. Now it's been completely revised and updated in a new fourth edition—non-doctrinaire, informative, and friendly, it is the most accessible and authoritative book, as much required reading for expecting and new mothers as a pregnancy guide and baby name book. All healthy mothers should consider breastfeeding for the first year of a baby’s life, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, and this is the book that will help women give their babies the healthiest start possible. Written by Sally Wendkos Olds and a new co-author, Laura Marks, M.D., The Complete Book of Breastfeeding, Fourth Edition offers a comprehensive introduction to breastfeeding—how to get ready before the baby arrives; how to involve fathers and siblings; and the best diet and foods for mom. There are sections on dealing with problems at the hospital; extensive information on exclusive pumping (EPing); the best systems for giving supplementary bottles to a breastfed baby; the safest sleep scenarios for babies; breastfeeding in public, including laws affecting breastfeeding mothers. New data about preterm infants is presented, and special situations—multiples, breast cancer, overweight and large-breasted women, breast surgery, tattoos and piercings—are also discussed in detail. An expanded chapter on weaning features sections on breastfeeding past infancy. Also new is an appendix of online resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heidi Siefkas was a happily married, globetrotting professional who seemingly had it all -- until a tree limb in New York's Hudson River Valley struck her down, breaking her neck and leaving her unconscious. Suddenly, life as she knew it stopped. She lost her independence. She lost her career. She watched her marriage disintegrate as she confronted a trail of devastating lies about her husband's double life. She had lost all that mattered, but she was a survivor. She fought to restore her health, repair her broken heart, and rebuild herself. Along the way, she gained clarity about her core values, ultimately coming to a deeper understanding of what it means to have it all. Through down-to-earth, short vignettes, When All Balls Drop shows us how it's possible to look up in spite of pain, deceit, and loss. Heidi's memoir -- rich with hope and humor -- inspires anyone who's had to confront tragedy and reassess their life in the wake of life-altering events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that elderly persons have a 33-35% chance of falling and becoming injured, most are ill-prepared. According to the World Health Organization, falls cause over 50% of accidental injuries and 39% of fatal injuries in the elderly. They are the fifth leading cause of death in the general population. Falls can be either non-mechanical, related to underlying illness or debilitation, or they can be mechanical, related to accidental trips and slips and caused by environmental factors such as poor lighting, surprise steps, lack of grab bars, and slippery bathroom floors. Non-mechanical falls can be related to cognitive disorders, such as stroke or dementia, or to frailty. They can also be related to over-medicating with sedatives, diabetic medications, or blood pressure therapy. Falls can be the consequence of aging or chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or cancer. Patients with any of these disorders may have poor muscle tone, walking disorders, or a loss of equilibrium. Mechanical falls may be completely avoided by fall-proofing the home environment. This book outlines several practical tips for eliminating potential home hazards and reviews each of the major causes of falls to help the patient and his or her caregiver, as well as the health provider, prevent falling by adapting one's lifestyle. The book also covers exercise programs and community programs that can be established and used to minimize the risk of falling in the elderly. Given that falls are common and that the majority of persons who fall are ill-prepared, this book will raise awareness of fall-prevention measures that can help reduce falls and fall-related injuries.
