Book excerpt: Central to God’s character is the quality of holiness. Yet, even so, most people are hard-pressed to define what God’s holiness precisely is. Many preachers today avoid the topic altogether because people today don’t quite know what to do with words like “awe” or “fear.” R. C. Sproul, in this classic work, puts the holiness of God in its proper and central place in the Christian life. He paints an awe-inspiring vision of God that encourages Christian to become holy just as God is holy. Once you encounter the holiness of God, your life will never be the same.

Book Synopsis The Lord Is My Song by : Mark G. Turner
Download or read book The Lord Is My Song written by Mark G. Turner and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been involved in Christian music for many years, I have made an unfortunate observation. Far too often, music has been the primary focus of many worship practices and events. Our Lord, whom we love, must be restored to the central point of our worship. As an orchestral composer, I realize how alluring music can be. We must set this allurement aside and refocus on Gods glory. If artistic beauty and musicianship have taken center stage, then our music may have become a sinful source of pride. Singers and musicians have sometimes become involved in worship teams and choirs without ever having begun a personal relationship with our Lord Jesus, and when their musical motivation fades, they depart, having never learned to love Him. Music is the organized, auditory, communicative expression by the living of the life they possess and the truths they profess. In worship we affirm His worth. Worship, as an act of the will, indicates our position as His obedient people, and He, as Lord, must receive our adoration. It is my intent with these devotionals, based on seventy-five passages of Scripture, comprising 291 verses, to provide a valuable resource for all who lead worship.
Book Synopsis Still Time to Care by : Greg Johnson
Download or read book Still Time to Care written by Greg Johnson and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the start of the gay rights movement in 1969, evangelicalism's leading voices cast a vision for gay people who turn to Jesus. It was C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, Francis Schaeffer and John Stott who were among the most respected leaders within theologically orthodox Protestantism. We see with them a positive pastoral approach toward gay people, an approach that viewed homosexuality as a fallen condition experienced by some Christians who needed care more than cure. With the birth and rise of the ex-gay movement, the focus shifted from care to cure. As a result, there are an estimated 700,000 people alive today who underwent conversion therapy in the United States alone. Many of these patients were treated by faith-based, testimony-driven parachurch ministries centered on the ex-gay script. Despite the best of intentions, the movement ended with very troubling results. Yet the ex-gay movement died not because it had the wrong sex ethic. It died because it was founded on a practice that diminished the beauty of the gospel. Yet even after the closure of the ex-gay umbrella organization Exodus International in 2013, the ex-gay script continues to walk about as the undead among us, pressuring people like me to say, "I used to be gay, but I'm not gay anymore. Now I'm just same-sex attracted." For orthodox Christians, the way forward is a path back to where we were forty years ago. It is time again to focus with our Neo-Evangelical fathers on care--not cure--for our non-straight sisters and brothers who are living lives of costly obedience to Jesus. With warmth and humor as well as original research, Still Time to Care will chart the path forward for our churches and ministries in providing care. It will provide guidance for the gay person who hears the gospel and finds themselves smitten by the life-giving call of Jesus. Woven throughout the book will be Richard Lovelace’s 1978 call for a "double repentance" in which gay Christians repent of their homosexual sins and the church repents of its homophobia--putting on display for all the power of the gospel.

Book Synopsis The Way of Holiness by : Phoebe Palmer
Download or read book The Way of Holiness written by Phoebe Palmer and published by . This book was released on 1843 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoebe Palmer's excellent Christian devotional is filled with lessons on attaining spiritual closeness to God, and living a life of a true believer with the Bible close to heart. Superb for her thoroughness in selecting the finest lessons from scripture, Phoebe Palmer begins each chapter of this book with a short yet poignant verse or quotation. This work is an account of the author's own discovery of faith, given in the order of spiritual awakenings she received in the process of becoming a good Christian. With her talent for plain explanation through both poem and text, the author mentions chapters of the Bible most useful for readers to reference. Part of this work is introspective, as Palmer observes the gradual change in her spirit as she endeavors to attain true nearness to God. Yet her narration is also part-biographical, recounting incidents and encounters with people who had a lasting effect on her spiritual journey. As one of the first female Christian writers, Palmer is conscious of her gender and the potential that this book might inspire and awaken the spirits of fellow women. Above all however, she is focused upon the path and way to holiness; a journey on which all believers must walk in mindful reverence of the divine.

Download or read book The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification written by Walter Marshall and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2001-10 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification presents the culmination of Puritan thought on living the Christian life. Combining doctrinal precision and pastoral sensitivity, Walter Marshall shows how sanctification is essential to spiritual life, dependent on spiritual union with Jesus Christ, and inseparable though distinct from justification. He shows how holiness involves both the mind and the soul of the believer and that it is the aim of the Christian life. It is no wonder that this book has been reprinted many times throughout the years and received such high praise from leading ministers of the gospel. "The most important book on sanctification ever written." John Murray (1898 1975), professor of systematic theology, Westminster Theological Seminary
Book Synopsis I Can Hear Your Face by : Joan L. Brumble
Download or read book I Can Hear Your Face written by Joan L. Brumble and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK God has spoken to me on numerous occasions in reference to the title of the book. I even shared the concept with a visiting pastor, perhaps making it a sermon, but to no avail. I had felt it had fallen on deaf ears. But, later, I knew that was part of God's plan. When the idea of "ICHYF", (I Can Hear Your Face), was conceived in my heart and spirit, it became alive and burned within my soul and then it came, my Heavenly Father spoke to me: "I choose you; I am the one who inspired and planted the seed in your heart. I am the one keeping this concept alive. I nourished it continually. Write it down my daughter. I will give you the inspiration to write the words as coming from me. Live through them my daughter, make my words come alive. It pleases me that you are willing to obey me. Remember my words when I said that I know you have little strength, you've tried your best to keep my word and you have not denied my name. These words will be my testimony of the truth. I cannot deny my own name." That which was first conceived in my spirit and my heart, ICHYF, really isn't anything new, but it is speaking to a new audience perhaps because of a generational gap in coming from a solid Christian home. All the trials, heartaches, much pain in my life, God has worked out for good. What he has and is doing in my life, he will do for you. Listen for God to whisper how much he loves you at the turn of every page. All through the writing process, I prayed for each one of you, my readers that you will be truly be blessed by our Abba Father.
