Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If asked at the many different points in my life to describe the definition of normal, no two answers wouldve been the same. My Drill Sergeant, when I was in the Army, said that it looked like I woke up in a new world everyday. Thats probably when I wouldve started referring to seek out the dictionarys answer at that time. By not having a handle on a reasonable definition to such a simple word is the best indicator of just how turbulent my life was, at that time. One of my earliest memories was the ending of Camelot with the assassination of President Kennedy. I was not aware of how this tragedy would impact the nation and the world, I couldnt even grasp the complexities of how my own life was unfolding around me the way it was. The 60s roller coaster left me starting the 70s in the house of mirrors, with no exit in sight. Ive always been aware that we all have problems that each of us have to deal with, but mine seemed to be strictly unique to me, or maybe it was the way I perceived them. Ive learned (much later in life) that we are all in this together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becky Kueker thought she had it all, publishing a new book, Hiding in My Pajamas, three years ago, and launching a national speaking career traveling the country at 75. What more could you ask coming off a two year low after she retired struggling with the emotional stereotypes that deal with retirement and aging. It was not until a complicated surgery requiring six months in a wheelchair and endless rehab, turned her life in a new direction she could never have expected. Fighting fear, depression and the realization that she would once again have to start over, Becky shares her journey facing a new beginning discovering that it’s laughter that changes everything. Meeting passionate people who inspired her, chapters are filled with poignant stories from women and men who have proven that aging does not have to define you and new beginnings are possible. Their stories are powerful and highlight the determination it takes to live your best life and what the passage of time means to how capable we are of embracing change. Not being financially prepared for retirement has become a national epidemic. Her chapter, Learning to Live After Retirement, features stories from those who were unaware that not planning was just speculating and rolling the dice on what might be. The shock that their savings will not be sufficient to retain the lifestyle they lived before offers a glimpse of a generation not prepared. Interviewing her husband and other men about retirement and aging highlights the unexpected marital turbulence that finds its way into very personal struggles that no one saw coming. “At last!A realistic and insightful book that reveals what really happens when you retire. Filled with humor and honesty this inspirational story is sometimes painful, often funny, always practical and thoroughly captivating.” —Rose Castillo Guilbault, author of Farmworker’s Daughter: Growing up Mexican in America and The Latina’s Guide to Success in the Workplace

Book excerpt: A gorgeously rendered graphic novel of Daniel Alarcón’s story City of Clowns. From the author of The King Is Always Above the People, which was longlisted for the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction. Oscar “Chino” Uribe is a young Peruvian journalist for a local tabloid paper. After the recent death of his philandering father, he must confront the idea of his father’s other family, and how much of his own identity has been shaped by his father’s murky morals. At the same time, he begins to chronicle the life of street clowns, sad characters who populate the violent and corrupt city streets of Lima, and is drawn into their haunting, fantastical world. This remarkably affecting story by Daniel Alarcón was included in his acclaimed first book, War by Candlelight, and now, in collaboration with artist Sheila Alvarado, it takes on a new, thrilling form. This graphic novel, with its short punches of action and images, its stark contrasts between light and dark, truth and fiction, perfectly corresponds to the tone of Chino’s story. With the city of Lima as a character, and the bold visual language from the story, City of Clowns is moving, menacing, and brilliantly vivid.

Book excerpt: Bad clowns—those malicious misfits of the midway who terrorize, haunt, and threaten us—have long been a cultural icon. This book describes the history of bad clowns, why clowns go bad, and why many people fear them. Going beyond familiar clowns such as the Joker, Krusty, John Wayne Gacy, and Stephen King’s Pennywise, it also features bizarre, lesser-known stories of weird clown antics including Bozo obscenity, Ronald McDonald haters, killer clowns, phantom-clown abductors, evil-clown panics, sex clowns, carnival clowns, troll clowns, and much more. Bad Clowns blends humor, investigation, and scholarship to reveal what is behind the clown’s dark smile.

Book excerpt: Life was falling apart. Within the space of three years, Sonia Choquette had suffered the unexpected death of two close family members, seen her marriage implode, and been let down by trusted colleagues. And sympathy was not forthcoming. "You’re a world-renowned spiritual teacher and intuitive guide," people jeered. "How could you not have seen this coming?" Having intuitive abilities didn’t make her superhuman, however. Nor did it exempt her from being wounded or suffering the pain of loss and the consequences of our all-too-human traits such as anger, resentment, and pride—traits that can lead even the best of us to stray from our spiritual path. In order to regain her spiritual footing, Sonia turned to the age-old practice of pilgrimage and set out to walk the legendary Camino de Santiago, an 820-kilometer trek over the Pyrenees and across northern Spain. Day after day she pushed through hunger, exhaustion, and pain to reach her destination. Eventually, mortification of the flesh gave way to spiritual renewal, and she rediscovered the gifts of humility and forgiveness that she needed to repair her world. In this riveting book, Sonia shares the intimate details of her grueling experience, as well as the unexpected moments of grace, humor, beauty, and companionship that supported her through her darkest hours. While her journey is unique, the lessons she learned—about honoring your relationships with others as well as with your own higher self, and forgiving all else—are universal.

Actual routines unfold in a series of photos and descriptions, with tips on selling them. From the "levitation gag" to "wire walking," to developing your own act, it's the perfect clown school.

Book excerpt: Author's note: Some scenes of domestic violence may be disturbing, but I promise a happy ending. Abby O’Rourke thought she had dodged a bullet when she broke up with her possessive boyfriend. But when he kidnaps her and drives her to the middle of nowhere, then crashes in a snowstorm, she knows she has to make her escape before he regains consciousness. She only sees lights at one house, on the other side of the lake from the road. As she desperately treks toward it through the snow, her thin clothing offers little protection against the harsh elements. When she finally stumbles to the home’s front door, it is opened by a shaggy-haired, bearded man who scoops her up and carries her to the fire. Grayson Dunn moved to the Minnesota lake house to get away from everyone after a tragedy tore his life apart. He’s satisfied being miles away from any other human being, isolated and writing his thriller novels, so he’s caught by surprise by the freezing young woman at his door. His protective instincts—the ones he thought buried—kick in, and he helps her warm up, ready to deliver her to law enforcement as soon as the road is cleared. But danger lurks outside, and Grayson is forced to rely on his training to protect Abby—and himself. But the longer they spend confined together, the more she brightens up his gloomy life opens up his eyes and his heart. He saved her life…but never thought she could save his. keywords: forced proximity, stranded romance, damsel in distress, wounded hero, hermit

Book excerpt: "Welcome to Silvertown, Washington. Population: 602. (For now.) Officer Mary Whittaker is the lone cop in a small, bizarre mountain town that has yet to fully welcome her. With the chief of police on leave, she is left to uncover the truth behind a sudden spate of abnormal incidents. An exemplary, beloved teenager has died tragically after eating wild mushrooms from his lawn. A hiker was found dead on a trail, smiling serenely after being mauled by a bear. And other residents seem to have lost all sense of self-preservation as they walk out in front of her moving cruiser or sit placidly in the middle of a sharp bend in a mountain road. As she witnesses increasingly odd behavior and more bodies are discovered in baffling-and completely avoidable-circumstances, Officer Whittaker is dismayed to find no two cases are the same, except in their bizarreness. Though every possible explanation and conspiracy theory is considered, from mental breakdowns to aliens, it turns out to be something much more unsettling. The townsfolk are all losing their instincts, one by one. As the town descends into panic, and Mary's own instincts begin to fail, she must figure out what is happening, who is behind it, and how to prevent the quirky mountain village from turning into a ghost town"--
