Book Synopsis The Worker Center Handbook by : Kim Bobo
Download or read book The Worker Center Handbook written by Kim Bobo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worker centers are becoming an important element in labor and community organizing and the struggle for fair pay and decent working conditions for low-wage workers, especially immigrants. There are currently more than two hundred worker centers in the country, and more start every month. Most of these centers struggle as they try to raise funds, maintain stable staff, and build a membership base. For this book, Kim Bobo and Marién Casillas Pabellón, two women with extensive experience supporting and leading worker centers, have interviewed staff at a broad range of worker centers with the goal of helping others understand how to start and build their organizations. This book is not theoretical, but rather is designed to be a practical workbook for staff, boards, and supporters of worker centers.Geared toward groups that want to build worker centers, this book discusses how to survey the community, take on an initial campaign, recruit leaders, and raise seed funds. Bobo and Casillas Pabellón also provide a wealth of advice to help existing centers become stronger and more effective. The Worker Center Handbook compiles best practices from around the country on partnering with labor, enlisting the assistance of faith communities and lawyers, raising funds, developing a serious membership program, integrating civic engagement work, and running major campaigns. The authors urge center leaders to both organize and build strong administrative systems. Full of concrete examples from worker centers around the country, the handbook is practical and honest about challenges and opportunities.

Book excerpt: OUTREACH is a motivational, biblical and inspiring scriptural approach to reaching out to others. This is our biblical mandate, but sometimes we need a holy nudge. It is my prayer that by the time you finish reading this book your thinking will have changed a little concerning evangelism. The word 'repent' simply means to change our thinking. It has been my prayer we repent about the way we think about outreach and evangelism. It seems to me the ones who still care about the lost are the new believers. Somehow in the midst of serving Jesus, we have lost the burden He has for those He came to 'seek and to save.' New believers usually make the best soul winners ever. It might be because they have such a burden for those they love who have not discovered what Jesus can do for them. The tragedy is they hang around those of us who have grown cold toward the lost and before you know it they become just like us. I am not sure why that is, but the new believers have much more of a passion for their lost friends then those who have been 'around church' for a while.

Book Synopsis The Pharisee Factory by : Glenn Garvin
Download or read book The Pharisee Factory written by Glenn Garvin and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A factory produces, but what if the product was not what the manufacturer ordered? In this book, The Pharisee Factory, Glenn describes where the church has drifted off mission""choosing rules, knowledge, and power over God's glorious reflection of himself. Like the Pharisees, who started out trying to protect the words of God, they move toward controlling the words of God. Powerful leaders chose to operate much like the very ones that Jesus called "white washed sepulchers." Who is responsible for the condition of the modern church? It lies with us, the local church leadership. We may know about the New Testament leadership model, yet we continue to sustain and promote practices that Jesus hated. Church leaders and church attenders have always known there is something off with our current model of "doing" church. They just didn't know exactly what went wrong and why. We now realize the modern model is too top-heavy, hierarchical, and authoritarian when held up next to the flattened, gift-rich, and flexible style of the New Testament church. We may even know the historical damage that our modern models have caused. But have we actually looked at the results of our systems and structures over the past couple millennia? The book just asks a simple question: have we produced more Pharisees than disciples?
