This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Social Concerns provides community-based learning courses, community-based research, and service opportunities for students and faculty and lies at the heart of the University of Notre Dame. It is a place where faith and action, service and learning, research and resolve intersect. For more than 30 years the Center has offered educational experiences in social concerns inspired by Gospel values and the Catholic social tradition so that students and faculty may better understand and respond to poverty and injustice. Through the Center's programs students, faculty, staff, and alumni are enabled to think critically about today’s complex social realities and about their responsibilities in facing them. The Second Vatican Council articulated the significance of the baptismal call to discipleship for all believers, emphasizing active participation of the laity in the life of the church in the world. Responding to that urging, the Congregation of Holy Cross dedicated themselves to intentional formation of the laity through academic study of theology and through long-term immersion at their aposolates in the United States, Peru, Chile, and Uganda. The Center for Social Concerns, founded at the University of Notre Dame in 1983 by Fr. Don McNeill, C.S.C, deepened these efforts through a combination of pastoral theology, community-based learning, and lay formation for mission. This edited volume consists of eleven firsthand accounts from those directly formed by the Center for Social Concerns' approach to pastoral theology and through post-graduate collaboration in ministry with the Congregation of the Holy Cross. These fifteen essays will hold great interest for Catholics wishing to explore the implications of Vatican II for the church's mission in the world, for undergraduate and graduate students focusing on pastoral theology and missiology, and for all the people of good drawn to explore the relationships between faith and justice, contemplation and action.

How can we speak with real authority while still keeping our humility? The book is geared to assist believers to see how Micah 6:8 helps to provide a convergence point for praxis and spirituality.

Book excerpt: The author, a published poet, presents 32 selected passages from scripture and follows each with a poetic meditation that offers a perspective on the people and events of the passages that is not necessarily part of our normal reaction to these mostly familiar biblical accounts. A reflection question after each selection helps to personalize the reader's encounter with the scriptural passage. Part 1, Disciples, presents particular people from the Bible. Part 2, Encounters, deals more specifically with the person of Jesus, bringing events in the scriptures into our daily lives as Christians. The book is meant to open a door for readers to enter into their own meditation, and as such is not so much intended to be read as to be prayed. Walking Humbly is a book about our relationship with the Lord and is appropriate as an instigator of faith sharing, as an aid for individual prayer, as a starting point for meditation, and as a companion for those on retreat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this masterful commentary, respected biblical scholar Bruce Waltke carefully interprets the message of the prophet Micah, building a bridge between Micah's ancient world and our life today. Waltke's Commentary on Micah quickly distinguishes itself from other commentaries on this book by displaying an unprecedented exegetical thoroughness, an expert understanding of historical context, and a keen interest in illuminating the contribution of Micah to Christian theology. Tackling hard questions about date and authorship, Waltke contends that Micah himself wrote and edited the nineteen sermons comprising the book. Waltke's clear analytical outline leads readers through the three cycles of Micah, each beginning with an oracle of doom and ending with an oracle of hope, decisively showing that hope wins over doom. Learned yet amazingly accessible, combining scholarly erudition with passion for Micah's contemporary relevance, this book will well serve teachers, pastors, and students alike.

Book excerpt: It feels like our world is moving in new, uncertain directions and in unknown waters where you need a good anchor. In Jesus Christ, who is our Rock, we have hope as an anchor for the soul. To not be set adrift, one needs to stay connected to that anchor. I have found it is only by regular time in God's Word that it happens. We believe the promise recorded in 1 Peter 1:24-25: The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures forever. Day by day, as we come to God's Enduring Word, He has wisdom, strength, and blessing to give us. We can weather storms and enjoy calm waters. We can grow in seasons of drought and bear a harvest for God's kingdom year-round. For 25 years I have prepared a weekly devotional. Here are 365 selected Scripture passages along with an inspirational, encouraging, and helpful thought. My prayer is that you would know and enjoy more and more of God's enduring word. In Jesus, David Guzik

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We've made following Jesus far too complex. We don't know what to do with all the things in the Bible that seem necessary, so we make them into a to-do list: love others, forgive those who hurt you, have joy, be patient, stay faithful, give to the hurting, serve in your church, pray without ceasing, confess your sins, and on and on. These are all great things, but is a checklist really what Jesus intended when he said, "Follow me"? More than two thousand years ago, the prophet Micah implored Israel to return to its true calling: "Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God." Could this plainspoken Bible verse not only sum up how we should live today but breathe a fresh purpose into our souls? In this practical and freeing book, pastor Rusty George shares the simplicity of what God desires from us. Living a faithful life should not be a chore, and George teaches how to put away our checklists and walk humbly according to God's will for our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "Walk Humbly with Your God: Putting God's Purpose First in Your Life," readers are invited on a transformative journey to deepen their relationship with God and align their lives with His divine purpose. Through a compelling blend of biblical insight, practical wisdom, and heartfelt conviction, this book serves as a guide to anyone yearning to walk more closely with God. The chapters unfold a path of spiritual discovery, starting from the roots of our relationship with the Divine in "Walking with God in the Beginning" and moving through the many aspects of a life lived in faith. The book offers a profound look into what it means to truly walk in God's truth, teaching readers to embrace a life guided by divine principles and to maintain integrity in their faith even in the face of adversity. This profound work delves into the essence of humility in "Walk Humbly with Your God," encouraging readers to cast aside pride and embrace a simpler, more modest approach to their spiritual journey. It grapples with the realities of doubt and difficulty in chapters like "Walking with God in Spite of Doubt" and "Do Not Give Up in Your Walk with God!", providing encouragement and strategies to persevere. "Walk Humbly with Your God" does not shy away from challenging readers to examine their faith deeply, as seen in chapters like "Examine Yourselves to See Whether You Are in the Faith." It also highlights the importance of wisdom and discernment in dealing with others in "Walk in Wisdom Toward Outsiders," promoting a Christian way of life that extends beyond the walls of the church and into every interaction. Perhaps most crucially, the book culminates in the profound reflection on the role of the Holy Spirit in our daily walk with God. "Walk by the Spirit" and "Invisible Guidance: The Daily Influence of the Spirit on Our Walk" offer an in-depth understanding of how to live a life that is not only informed by Scripture but also led by the Spirit’s gentle guidance. Each chapter serves as a milestone in the believer's spiritual expedition, from choosing to walk with God to continuously moving forward in faith to never shrinking back. "Walk Humbly with Your God" is more than a book; it's a lifelong companion for anyone who seeks to live a life that is pleasing to God, filled with the joy of His presence and the peace of His guidance. Join the multitude of believers who have found in these pages a roadmap to a richer, more fulfilling relationship with Jehovah. Whether at the dawn of your spiritual journey or well along the path, this book is an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to put God's purpose first in their life.

Book excerpt: "Diversity, tolerance, inclusivity, and social justice are the chief values of postmodernity and political correctness. In a culture where these are deemed some of the last remaining virtues and biblical principles are routinely scorned, what should the church's posture be? Should Christians adjust the gospel, remodel our message, and bring our statements of faith more in line with the world's thinking? To ask that question is to answer it. But in case the answer isn't clear, these superbly-written essays spell it out in brilliant detail. I'm grateful for the courage of these men and the clarity of their voices. This is a vitally important volume, sounding all the right notes of passion, warning, instruction, and hope."--Phil Johnson, Executive Director of Grace To You
