This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, Legendary Stories of Wales is written by E. M. Wilkie, and illustrated with the stunning drawings of Honor Appleton. It contains a total of fifty-seven classic Welsh tales, ‘told through the ages’ – including those inspired by Ancient Greece and Rome, the Celtic past, King Arthur, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Dante, George Eliot, and many more. As Wilkie informs his reader... ‘many of them are well known... some are out-of-the-way tales... and a few, probably, have never been written down before.’ Honor C. Appleton (1879 – 1951), was a master of the trade. During her lifetime, she illustrated over one-hundred-and-fifty books, with her most famous works including Our Nursery Rhyme Book (1912),Charles Perrault’s Fairy Tales (1919), and the collected Stories of Hans Christian Andersen (1922). As her career progressed, she began producing bolder images for literary classics – Legendary Stories of Wales, being a prime example of this progression. Presented alongside the text, Appleton’s enchanting creations serve to further refine and enhance E. M. Wilkie’s folkloric storytelling. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s classics and fairy tales – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional postcolonial scholarship on art and imperialism emphasises tensions between colonising cores and subjugated peripheries. The ties between London and British white settler colonies have been comparatively neglected. Artworks not only reveal the controlling intentions of imperialist artists in their creation but also the uses to which they were put by others in their afterlives. In many cases they were used to fuel contests over cultural identity which expose a mixture of rifts and consensuses within the British ranks which were frequently assumed to be homogeneous. British Art for Australia, 1860–1953: The Acquisition of Artworks from the United Kingdom by Australian National Galleries represents the first systematic and comparative study of collecting British art in Australia between 1860 and 1953 using the archives of the Australian national galleries and other key Australian and UK institutions. Multiple audiences in the disciplines of art history, cultural history, and museology are addressed by analysing how Australians used British art to carve a distinct identity, which artworks were desirable, economically attainable, and why, and how the acquisition of British art fits into a broader cultural context of the British world. It considers the often competing roles of the British Old Masters (e.g. Romney and Constable), Victorian (e.g. Madox Brown and Millais), and modern artists (e.g. Nash and Spencer) alongside political and economic factors, including the developing global art market, imperial commerce, Australian Federation, the First World War, and the coming of age of the Commonwealth.

Book excerpt: Kyffin Williams is the culmination of four years of research at two centres for Kyffin Williams's art, the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, and Oriel Mon, Anglesey. Dr. Qing Chao Ma's illuminating new study incorporates Kyffin Williams's full range; his inspirational landscapes and seascapes in oil, his delicate watercolours, his distinctive linocuts and his mesmeric portraits. With her particular expertise, the author also draws comparisons between the work of Williams and Chinese art, linking him to other artistic traditions and establishing his rightful place in the worldwide art community. Combined with a rigorous biographical account on the life which informed the work and a rich variety of illustrations, Kyffin Williams is an invaluable contribution to the study and appreciation of one of Wales's foremost artists.'No other artist and author has collated so many diverse examples of Sir Kyffin's art in one publication with such coherence. This is a book put together with great care and purpose and written from the heart.' David Meredith, Sir Kyffin Williams Trust

This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ****** In the years following the Napoleonic Wars, the Bremen-born John Henry Bohte (1784-1824) quite rapidly acquired a reputation as a bookseller and publisher, with an import/export business based in London and also a presence in Leipzig. Bohte opened his shop in York Street, Covent Garden, in early 1813, while still in his twenties. He specialised in importing German books and German editions of the Greek and Roman classics, but soon combined his retail business with a German circulating library, the “Deutsche Lesebibliothek”. In early 1820, he was awarded a Royal Warrant as “Foreign Bookseller to His Majesty the King”. The portfolio of products and services offered by Bohte’s business included not just the importation of German books, but also an ambitious publishing programme in the fields of German and English literature, classical philology and natural history. Bohte’s regular and prolonged trips to Germany to attend the Leipzig Easter Book Fairs reflected his ambition to become a major exporter of English books to the continent too. In the words of one anonymous reviewer, Bohte was considered “a most spirited and most useful bookseller”. Although he died suddenly in London in 1824, aged only forty, he left an important legacy in both London and Leipzig. In his biography of J. H. Bohte, An Ocean of Literature, Graham Jefcoate has used a wide range of materials from collections in Britain, Germany and elsewhere to illuminate the role of the book trade in the process of Anglo-German exchange in the early nineteenth century.
