Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wake Up America The war did not come to us as it came to Belgium. No Oregon rancher, working in his field on a peaceful afternoon, was disturbed by an odd whirring in the sunny air, and looked toward Mount Hood to see an airplane spitting fire upon his neighbouring village. In no New England town did children huddle in the windows and peer at exultant Uhlans prancing down the maple-shaded street. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wake Up Americans: Addressed to the American Colony in San Francisco Their capacity for sentiment is one of the most im portant of those characteristics which distinguish men from dogs. A man who is incapable of sentiment is no better than a dog. The sentimental interest which attaches to the California tradition is derived from four historical elements. The first of these is the great epic story of the advance of the Aryan races in their westward march across the world. Book excerpt: Told from dual perspectives that span two books, this moving and emotionally-driven love story will leave readers breathless and reeling in equal measure. It continues. Tom watches from afar, day in, day out, seeing Lily laugh, seeing her cry - an unravelling actress, ripe for the taking. All he needs is one photo, the money it could make, the life it could give him and his family. So why can't he do it? Lily's also at a cross-roads. It's clear now that no matter how far she runs, she can't ever escape fame, the paparazzi, even her boyfriend. Surely it's just a matter of time before she does something stupid, something she’ll forever regret. Give them their big headline. Their front page news. Unless someone can convince the actress there’s more to life than sacrifice. It ends...?

Book excerpt: In Howells' maybe the most famous novel, The Rise of Silas Lapham, the story follows the materialistic rise of Silas Lapham from rags to riches, and his ensuing moral susceptibility. Silas earns a fortune in the paint business, but he lacks social standards, which he tries to attain through his daughter's marriage into the aristocratic Corey family. Silas' morality does not fail him. He loses his money but makes the right moral decision when his partner proposes the unethical selling of the mills to English settlers. The resolution of the love triangle of Irene Lapham, Tom Corey, and Penelope Lapham highlights Howells' rejection of the conventions of sentimental romantic novels as unrealistic and deceitful. William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author, literary critic, and playwright. He was the first American author to bring a realist aesthetic to the literature of the United States. His stories of Boston upper crust life set in the 1850s are highly regarded among scholars of American fiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States: Or Republic of America AT 9. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. They are not only part of our national heritage, but masterpieces of world literature whose deep and lasting influence is felt to this day. The Scarlet Letter vividly records America’s moral and historical roots in Puritan New England and masterfully re-creates a society’s preoccupation with sin, guilt, and pride. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn carries readers along on Huck’s unforgettable journey down the Mississippi in America’s foremost comic epic—the first great novel in a truly American voice. The Red Badge of Courage re-creates the brutal reality of war and its psychological impact on a young Civil War soldier in one of the most moving and widely read American novels. Billy Budd, Sailor, and Other Stories joins the world’s great tragic literature as a doomed seaman becomes the innocent victim of a clash between social authority and individual freedom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans All: Stories of American Life of to-Day In the years before the war, when we had more time for light pursuits, a favorite sport of reviewers was to hunt for the Great American Novel. They gave tongue here and there, and pursued the quarry with great excitement in various dirce tions, now north, now south, now west, and the inevitable disappointment at the end of the chase never deterred them from starting off on a fresh scent next day. But in spite of all the frenzied pursuit, the game sought, the Great American Novel, was never captured. Will it ever be captured? The thing they sought was a book that would be so broad, so typical, so true that it would stand as the adequate expres sion in fiction of American life. Did these tireless hunters ever stop to ask themselves, what is the Great French Novel? What is the Great English Novel? And if neither of these nations has produced a single book which embodies their national life, why should we expect that our life, so much more diverse in its elements, so multifarious in its aspects, could ever be summed up within the covers of a single book? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Eden is a tale about a young sailor struggling to become a writer. Eden is trying to rise above his destitute, proletarian circumstances through an intense and passionate pursuit of self-education, hoping to achieve a place among the literary elite. His principal motivation at first is his love for Ruth Morse. Because Eden is a rough, uneducated sailor from a working-class background and the Morse's are a bourgeois family, a union between them would be impossible unless and until he reached their level of knowledge and refinement. Jack London (1876-1916) was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist. His amazing life experience also includes being an oyster pirate, railroad hobo, gold prospector, sailor, war correspondent and much more. He wrote adventure novels & sea tales, stories of the Gold Rush, tales of the South Pacific and the San Francisco Bay area - most of which were based on or inspired by his own life experiences.
