Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Waiting on the Beloved: The Eucharist as Self-Giving Love, celebrated author and teacher, Joyce Ann Zimmerman, cpps, animates readers to “contemplate God’s unfailing and abiding love” (from the preface). Through thought-provoking reflections, readers are drawn into quiet communion with the Beloved, where we become aware that our waiting “is a matter of waiting on ourselves to become ever more deeply aware, responsive, self-emptying, self-giving, seeking, yearning, and expecting” (preface). The first three chapters survey God’s unfathomable love for us, and the last three chapters shift to us and what we do with this gift of divine love. While words are inadequate to express God’s love for us and our love for God, the Eucharist is at the heart of Divine love and is the ultimate expression of God’s self-giving love. This book is for anyone seeking to seriously encounter the Beloved in prayer and reflection, and anyone who desires to come to a deeper union with Christ in the Eucharist.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Toni Morrison’s Beloved is a spellbinding and dazzlingly innovative portrait of a woman haunted by the past. Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has borne the unthinkable and not gone mad, yet she is still held captive by memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. Meanwhile Sethe’s house has long been troubled by the angry, destructive ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone is engraved with a single word: Beloved. Sethe works at beating back the past, but it makes itself heard and felt incessantly in her memory and in the lives of those around her. When a mysterious teenage girl arrives, calling herself Beloved, Sethe’s terrible secret explodes into the present. Combining the visionary power of legend with the unassailable truth of history, Morrison’s unforgettable novel is one of the great and enduring works of American literature.

Book excerpt: What if God wants you to wait? Most of us know what it’s like to wait for God to change our circumstances. But, whether we’re waiting for physical healing, emotional breakthrough, or better relationships, waiting is something we usually try to avoid. Why? Because waiting is painful and hard. The truth is, it’s also inevitable. In Still Waiting, Ann Swindell explores the depths of why God wants us to wait by chronicling her own compelling story of waiting for healing from an incurable condition. She offers a vibrant retelling of the biblical account of the Bleeding Woman that parallels her story—and yours, too. Let Ann help you see the promise that is hidden in the ache of waiting and the hope of what God can—and will—do as you wait on him.
Book Synopsis Come Away My Beloved, Make Your Statement!! by : Annette Bacon
Download or read book Come Away My Beloved, Make Your Statement!! written by Annette Bacon and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realized! The fact that I could not get into Heaven on just being good and doing good works alone came into fruition when I totally surrendered my life to God. I was being a good girl, but not a Christian. It was May of 1985 when I committed my life to God (at least what I thought was a commitment). I was still smoking, drinking, and having sex. I was working, was engaged to be married, and was, what I thought, living my best life. However, sometime in August, I realized that I was not living a Godly kind of life. I was on the fence. I was trying to please family and God. Then there was Pastor Gloria Geneva Moses and Bishop Henry Samuel Moses that taught us by example how to live a Godly kind of life in this sinful world. They introduced us to the theater, wholesome movies, bowling, traveling, and different eateries. But Gospel music and Christian concerts were the most exciting event of our lives. Getting to see your favorite Gospel artist, whether music or the preached word, was always a life-changing event. Having them point the finger at you and declaring the will of God be done shapes you into the person God was calling you to be. Had I stayed on the fence, I truly believe that I would have been lost. I realized that I was happiest when giving God the glory. I thank Him for saving me and delivering me from myself. I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength in whom I will trust; my buckler and the horn of my salvation and my high tower. (Psalm 18:1-2) So, I begin to write little statements on how I view the scriptures just as God had revealed them to me. For example, Rahab, to me, was a hustling harlot. She was a wheeler and dealer, but she made it into the Kingdom. No one's perfect, but righteousness is in the sight of God.
Book Synopsis Daughters of Fire by : Christina Patterson
Download or read book Daughters of Fire written by Christina Patterson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You noticed it too? The light steadily dimming all around you and the push against your faith becoming increasingly aggressive. You question how you are to follow Jesus in a world where you are constantly surrounded by temptation. You wonder how you are to live on fire for God in the face of countless obstacles ready to extinguish your fire. If there is anyone best equipped to address these concerns, it is the prophet Elijah. He steps into Israelite history at a time when God's people are struggling with immoral leadership, widespread idol worship, and the greatest spiritual gap between themselves and God. Despite the dark and seemingly impossible circumstances, Elijah remains passionately bold about fulfilling God's purpose and mission. In Daughters of Fire, Christian author and speaker Christina Patterson takes readers on a journey through the life of Elijah. She shows women how to confidently and faithfully follow Jesus Christ in the face of growing temptation and in a world of spiritual decline. Now is not the time to allow our fire for God to sizzle out. Now is the time to conquer our fears, stand firm in our faith, and bravely accept our calling as God's Daughters of Fire. Christina Patterson is an author and speaker with a passion to encourage women in the love of Jesus Christ and the truth of God's Word. She holds her masters in Theology from Liberty University and is the founder and CEO of Beloved Women, Inc., a non-profit providing resources and community for women to truly know who they are in Christ: His Beloved. She is married to her college sweetheart and is a stay-at-home mom to their two young children.
Book Synopsis Seasons of Waiting by : Betsy Childs Howard
Download or read book Seasons of Waiting written by Betsy Childs Howard and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We’re all waiting for something. It might be a spouse or a baby. It might be healing or a home. Regardless of what we're waiting for, it’s easy to feel discontent when things aren’t going as planned and our dreams are delayed—especially when questions of “Why?” and “How long?” remain unanswered. God uses seasons of waiting to teach us patience and make us more like himself. But sanctification is not the only purpose God has in mind. When we wait faithfully with unmet longings, we become a powerful picture of the bride of Christ waiting for the day when he returns and God’s kingdom reigns.

Book Synopsis Rules for Old Men Waiting by : Peter Pouncey
Download or read book Rules for Old Men Waiting written by Peter Pouncey and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief, lyrical novel with a powerful emotional charge, Rules for Old Men Waiting is about three wars of the twentieth century and an ever-deepening marriage. In a house on the Cape “older than the Republic,” Robert MacIver, a historian who long ago played rugby for Scotland, creates a list of rules by which to live out his last days. The most important rule, to “tell a story to its end,” spurs the old Scot on to invent a strange and gripping tale of men in the trenches of the First World War. Drawn from a depth of knowledge and imagination, MacIver conjures the implacable, clear-sighted artist Private Callum; the private’s nemesis Sergeant Braddis, with his pincerlike nails; Lieutenant Simon Dodds, who takes on Braddis; and Private Charlie Alston, who is ensnared in this story of inhumanity and betrayal but brings it to a close. This invented tale of the Great War prompts MacIver’s own memories of his role in World War II and of Vietnam, where his son, David served. Both the stories and the memories alike are lit by the vivid presence of Margaret, his wife. As Hearts and Minds director Peter Davis writes, “Pouncey has wrought an almost inconceivable amount of beauty from pain, loss, and war, and I think he has been able to do this because every page is imbued with the love story at the heart of his astonishing novel.”

Download or read book Waiting for God written by Simone Weil and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'You cannot get far in these essays without sensing yourself in the presence of a writer of immense intellectual power and fierce independence of mind.' - Janet Soskice, from the Introduction to the Routledge Classics edition Simone Weil (1909–1943) is one of the most brilliant and unorthodox religious and philosophical thinkers of the twentieth century. She was also a political activist who worked in the Renault car factory in France in the 1930s and fought briefly as an anarchist in the Spanish Civil War. Hailed by Albert Camus as 'the only great spirit of our times,' her work spans an astonishing variety of subjects, from ancient Greek philosophy and Christianity to oppression, political freedom and French national identity. Waiting for God is one of her most remarkable books, full of piercing spiritual and moral insight. The first part comprises letters she wrote in 1942 to Jean-Marie Perrin, a Dominican priest, and demonstrate the intense inner conflict Weil experienced as she wrestled with the demands of Christian belief and commitment. She then explores the 'just balance' of the world, arguing that we should regard God as providing two forms of guidance: our ability as human beings to think for ourselves; and our need for both physical and emotional 'matter.' She also argues for the concept of a 'sacred longing'; that humanity's search for beauty, both in the world and within each other, is driven by our underlying desire for a tangible god. Eloquent and inspiring, Waiting for God asks profound questions about the nature of faith, doubt and morality that continue to resonate today. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new Introduction by Janet Soskice and retains the Foreword to the 1979 edition by Malcolm Muggeridge.
Download or read book The Art of Waiting written by Belle Boggs and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant exploration of the natural, medical, psychological, and political facets of fertility When Belle Boggs's "The Art of Waiting" was published in Orion in 2012, it went viral, leading to republication in Harper's Magazine, an interview on NPR's The Diane Rehm Show, and a spot at the intersection of "highbrow" and "brilliant" in New York magazine's "Approval Matrix." In that heartbreaking essay, Boggs eloquently recounts her realization that she might never be able to conceive. She searches the apparently fertile world around her--the emergence of thirteen-year cicadas, the birth of eaglets near her rural home, and an unusual gorilla pregnancy at a local zoo--for signs that she is not alone. Boggs also explores other aspects of fertility and infertility: the way longing for a child plays out in the classic Coen brothers film Raising Arizona; the depiction of childlessness in literature, from Macbeth to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; the financial and legal complications that accompany alternative means of family making; the private and public expressions of iconic writers grappling with motherhood and fertility. She reports, with great empathy, complex stories of couples who adopted domestically and from overseas, LGBT couples considering assisted reproduction and surrogacy, and women and men reflecting on childless or child-free lives. In The Art of Waiting, Boggs deftly distills her time of waiting into an expansive contemplation of fertility, choice, and the many possible roads to making a life and making a family.
