Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A celebration of waiting throughout history, and of its importance for connection, understanding, and intimacy in human communication We have always been conscious of the wait for life-changing messages, whether it be the time it takes to receive a text message from your love, for a soldier’s family to learn news from the front, or for a space probe to deliver data from the far reaches of the solar system. In this book in praise of wait times, award-winning author Jason Farman passionately argues that the delay between call and answer has always been an important part of the message. Traveling backward from our current era of Twitter and texts, Farman shows how societies have worked to eliminate waiting in communication and how they have interpreted those times’ meanings. Exploring seven eras and objects of waiting—including pneumatic mail tubes in New York, Elizabethan wax seals, and Aboriginal Australian message sticks—Farman offers a new mindset for waiting. In a rebuttal to the demand for instant communication, Farman makes a powerful case for why good things can come to those who wait.

It is a frightening and deadly efficient way to stay one step ahead. And cause the most chaos. For ex-CIA operative Jed Walker, chaos is his profession. On the outer, burned by his former agency, he is determined to clear his name. Stopping Zodiac is the only way. Desperate to catch the killers and find the mastermind, he can't afford to lose the next lead, but that means that sometimes the terrorists have to win. Ultimately, it all comes down to Walker: he's the only one who can break the chain and put the group to sleep . . . permanently. It's exactly eighty-one hours until deadline.

Book excerpt: A brilliant exploration of the natural, medical, psychological, and political facets of fertility When Belle Boggs's "The Art of Waiting" was published in Orion in 2012, it went viral, leading to republication in Harper's Magazine, an interview on NPR's The Diane Rehm Show, and a spot at the intersection of "highbrow" and "brilliant" in New York magazine's "Approval Matrix." In that heartbreaking essay, Boggs eloquently recounts her realization that she might never be able to conceive. She searches the apparently fertile world around her--the emergence of thirteen-year cicadas, the birth of eaglets near her rural home, and an unusual gorilla pregnancy at a local zoo--for signs that she is not alone. Boggs also explores other aspects of fertility and infertility: the way longing for a child plays out in the classic Coen brothers film Raising Arizona; the depiction of childlessness in literature, from Macbeth to Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; the financial and legal complications that accompany alternative means of family making; the private and public expressions of iconic writers grappling with motherhood and fertility. She reports, with great empathy, complex stories of couples who adopted domestically and from overseas, LGBT couples considering assisted reproduction and surrogacy, and women and men reflecting on childless or child-free lives. In The Art of Waiting, Boggs deftly distills her time of waiting into an expansive contemplation of fertility, choice, and the many possible roads to making a life and making a family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that the only time we're not hurrying is when we're rushing. By the time we heed the calls of smartphones, iPods, iPads, emails, podcasts, downloads, app shopping, YouTubing, web browsing, posting, and responding to posts, we've ridden the amped-up hurry-train so far that we're lost. In fact, the last items in our list ("posting and responding to posts") sound so much like "marrying and giving in marriage" that we might well conclude that we are wedded to whipped-up drivenness. We need a fast from going fast. The gospel of Christ calls us to rest, but learning how takes time. We're invited to ease off the hurry-train and learn the pace of waiting. But waiting for what? To become a bit more like Jesus, who lived at a breathtakingly still point before the one who sent him.

Book excerpt: Try as you may, you won’t get the answer because we’re guys and we come from Mars where it’s an alien-eat-alien world. Most of the time we’re confused as heck and need a girl to set us straight but all the other times we pretty much know what we want. The same way how we can’t figure you lot out and why you need so many pairs of shoes, we too can be hard nuts (all puns intended) to crack. Girls rule. That’s a fact no guy can deny. That said, there are a few things about you that drive us crazy and make us go running across continents and enroll into witness protection programmes to get as far away from you as possible. Here’s a book that’ll help you if not figure us out, save you from a few nasty dates and know when to run screaming, because at the end of the day boys will be boys.

This book was released on 2022-08-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is inspired by an incident that occurred between Kyron and a Cincinnati police officer who shot Kyron for trying to run from a dice game. Kyron served eight and a half years behind the incident. Before prison, Kyron worked a nine-to-five and hustled on the side. Kyron was very well-respected in the neighborhood. He was very much family-oriented but was also a ladies' man. After being released from prison, Kyron tried to walk a straight path, but there were roadblocks everywhere he turned. He couldn't get a job, couldn't get in school, and the girl he was with didn't want him because he didn't want to live the street life, so he eventually fell victim to circumstances and started selling drugs. He fell in love with a hood rat and tried to treat her good, but she dogged him. One of the friends he met in prison set him up. He served a year. One month after being released, Kyron was hooked up with a job. Once again, he was tryin' to live legit, and temptation was biting at him. The place he worked at was infested with all kinds of drug abusers, and at that time, one of his friends was on top in the coke game and he kept offering Kyron some cocaine. Kyron eventually took it and again ended up in jail, facing twenty to life because a close friend made a statement to the feds. Kyron ended up serving fifteen months in federal custody. After being released once again, he couldn't find a job, so he went back to the crack game. He went to lots of different events, some you may hate, some you may love, but believe them or not, he's still telling the truth.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 1999 National Book Award for Fiction! In Waiting, PEN/Hemingway Award-winning author Ha Jin draws on his intimate knowledge of contemporary China to create a novel of unexpected richness and feeling. This is the story of Lin Kong, a man living in two worlds, struggling with the conflicting claims of two utterly different women as he moves through the political minefields of a society designed to regulate his every move and stifle the promptings of his innermost heart. For more than seventeen years, this devoted and ambitious doctor has been in love with an educated, clever, modern woman, Manna Wu. But back in the traditional world of his home village lives the wife his family chose for him when he was young--a humble and touchingly loyal woman, whom he visits in order to ask, again and again, for a divorce. In a culture in which the ancient ties of tradition and family still hold sway and where adultery discovered by the Party can ruin lives forever, Lin's passionate love is stretched ever more taut by the passing years. Every summer, his compliant wife agrees to a divorce but then backs out. This time, Lin promises, will be different. Tracing these lives through their summer of decision and beyond, Ha Jin vividly conjures the texture of daily life in a place where the demands of human longing must contend with the weight of centuries of custom. Waiting charms and startles us with its depiction of a China that remains hidden to Western eyes even as it moves us with its piercing vision of the universal complications of love.
