Book Synopsis Handbook of Autobiography / Autofiction by : Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf
Download or read book Handbook of Autobiography / Autofiction written by Martina Wagner-Egelhaaf and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 2857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time. General questions of the literary as, e.g., the relation between literature and reality, truth and fiction, the dependency of author, narrator, and figure, or issues of individual and cultural styles etc., can be studied preeminently in the autobiographical genre. Yet, the tradition of life-writing has, in the course of literary history, developed manifold types and forms. Especially in the globalized age, where the media and other technological / cultural factors contribute to a rapid transformation of lifestyles, autobiographical writing has maintained, even enhanced, its popularity and importance. By conceiving autobiography in a wide sense that includes memoirs, diaries, self-portraits and autofiction as well as media transformations of the genre, this three-volume handbook offers a comprehensive survey of theoretical approaches, systematic aspects, and historical developments in an international and interdisciplinary perspective. While autobiography is usually considered to be a European tradition, special emphasis is placed on the modes of self-representation in non-Western cultures and on inter- and transcultural perspectives of the genre. The individual contributions are closely interconnected by a system of cross-references. The handbook addresses scholars of cultural and literary studies, students as well as non-academic readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Awarded third place in the 1993 Wattie Book Award, Martin Edmond's The Autobiography of My Father is a pioneering work of creative non-fiction in which Edmond transforms his grief at the death of his father, Trevor Edmond, into a fascinating memoir and love letter. Two major sections of The Autobiography of My Father allow us to meet Trevor Edmond in his own words through taped interviews and confessional notes that he wrote for his psychiatrists. The book also presents a counterview to the opinions expressed in the celebrated autobiography of Lauris Edmond (Martin's mother), a leading poet and public figure. This is a deeply moving evocation by a gifted writer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaginative and cerebral, this volume recounts the fantastic history of the antipodes—namely Australia and New Zealand—from the Western perspective over the course of the past five millennia. Tracing the fiction underlying the fact in the tales of, among others, Marco Polo, John Mandeville, and Thomas More, this remarkable compilation explores the imagination of travelers, writers, map-makers, charlatans, and rogues who dreamed of other worlds. Delving into the Australian character and the New Zealand psyche, this account also conveys an insightful glimpse into Western history.

Download or read book Waimarino County written by Martin Edmond and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new work from a master prose stylist, Waimarino County is a book of essays described as 'elegant discursions on themes of memory, words and travel'. Edmond has developed over four books now an idiosyncratic and utterly engaging way of writing that always draws on himself and his own often quite intimate experience. Yet his writing is never egotistical or self-absorbed; it turns outwards, to the past, to the landscape and the natural world, to other writers and artists, to journeys and distant places. Though held together by a single consciousness the book is divided into four sections, 'Autobiographies', mostly memories of a New Zealand childhood and adolescence, 'Meditations' on subjects ranging from the Rosetta Stone to the late Alan Brunton, 'Illusions', on dreams and visions, and 'Voices', a long essay on the mysterious identity of the writer. Waimarino County confirms the view that Martin Edmond is a major voice in our literature.
