Book Synopsis Wages in the Business Cycle by : Jonathan Michie
Download or read book Wages in the Business Cycle written by Jonathan Michie and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During prolonged economic recessions when the normal cyclical expansion of output fails to materialize, the topic of the 'cyclical behaviour of wages' has emerged as an area of debate. In 1985, the British Treasury claimed that academic studies into the cyclical behaviour of wages demonstrated that a cut in wages would increase employment. Wages in the Business Cycle contests this argument by presenting the results of original, empirical work which illustrates the absence of any systematic empirical regularity to wage movements over the business cycle. Jonathan Michie argues that the re-emergence of this debate must be seen within the context of the theory of the 'labour demand function', representing an attempt to challenge the Keynesian theoretical assumptions implicit in the bulk of applied macro economic work up to the late 1970s.
Book Synopsis Employment and the Great Recession by : Mr.Bas B. Bakker
Download or read book Employment and the Great Recession written by Mr.Bas B. Bakker and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper argues that the sharp increase in unemployment in a number of advanced countries during the Great Recession was not just cyclical (the result of a lack of aggregate demand); the degree of adjustment of real wages and the impact this had on labor productivity also played a role. In many countries, post-2007 employment losses were modest, as real wages adjusted when the economy slowed down. But in some countries real wage growth stayed too high for too long. The result was large-scale labor shedding, which boosted labor productivity but also contributed to a sharp rise in unemployment. In this context, the paper discusses the different experiences of the UK (where employment increased) and Spain (where it fell sharply), and finds that almost two thirds of the employment losses in Spain resulted from the failure of real wages to adjust adequately.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Non-Wage Labour Costs (Routledge Revivals) by : Bob Hart
Download or read book The Economics of Non-Wage Labour Costs (Routledge Revivals) written by Bob Hart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-07-19 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the OECD, 30% of the average firm’s total labour costs comprises items which are other than direct remuneration. This reissue, first published in 1984, focuses upon these non-wage labour costs, which include; fringe-benefit payments, obligatory social-welfare contributions, holiday entitlements and expenditures on recruitment and training, seeking to make amends for the woeful lack of consideration given to these important factors in previous wage literature. The book focuses on two major areas of enquiry: firstly, the costs for the cyclical behaviour of employment, and secondly, the role of average working hours per employee in the firm’s overall allocation of labour services. The author begins with an empirical survey and costs breakdown, followed by extensive data on Japan, the UK, the USA and West Germany. The ensuing analysis considers the question as to why firms incur the various non-wages, and a comparative static factor demand model is constructed, which accommodates the major cost items.
