Book Synopsis Critical Wage Theory by : Ruben J. Garcia
Download or read book Critical Wage Theory written by Ruben J. Garcia and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this highly original and personal book, Ruben J. Garcia argues forcefully that we must center the minimum wage as a tool for fighting structural racism. Employing the lessons of critical race theory to show how low minimum wages and underenforcement of workplace laws have always been features of our racially stratified society, Garcia explains why we must follow the leadership of social movements by treating increases in minimum wage levels and enforcement as matters of racial justice. Offering solutions that would benefit all workers, especially the immigrants and people of color most often made victims of wage theft, Critical Wage Theory is essential reading for anyone who seeks a more just future for the working class.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,7, SRH - Mobile University, language: English, abstract: The present paper aims at evaluating minimum wage laws. In order to reflect the topic, two countries – Germany and the United Kingdom –, which have already introduced minimum wages, are chosen as examples. Furthermore, the paper examines minimum wages from the perspective of two different economic theories on government intervention by introducing the neoclassical and the Keynesian approach. It investigates the observed actual impact and effectiveness of minimum wage legislation against the presented market theories as well as against the objectives and expectations raised by the legislation. Finally, the student paper gives a recommendation whether the introduction of minimum wages is actually worthwhile or not. The paper starts with a definition of the problem and introduces objectives as well as current relevance of the topic. Subsequently, the theoretical background is reflected. This includes the definition of the term minimum wage as well as presenting the neoclassical and the Keynesian economic theory. Chapter two finally ends with a short summary. Afterwards, the paper continues with Chapter three, which describes the minimum wage concepts of Germany and the United Kingdom. Therefore, the implementation track records explain the history, structure and the scope of the different minimum wage concepts. The critical discussion in chapter four finally evaluates the observed actual impact and effectiveness of minimum wages against the economic theories. Furthermore, it reflects the expectations and objectives which are raised by the government. The paper concludes with a summary and an outlook.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Prevailing Wage Laws by : Peter Philips
Download or read book The Economics of Prevailing Wage Laws written by Peter Philips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prevailing wage laws affecting the construction industry in the United States exist at the Federal and State levels. These laws require that construction workers employed by contractors on government works be paid at least the wage rates and fringe benefits 'prevailing' for similar work where government contract work is performed. The federal law (Davis-Bacon Act) was passed in 1931. By 1969 four fifth of States had enacted prevailing wage legislation. In the 1970s, facing fiscal crises, States considered repealing their laws in an effort to reduce construction costs, and since 1979 nine States have repealed their laws. These repeals at State level along with unsuccessful attempts to repeal the Davis-Bacon Act have pushed prevailing wages to the forefront of public policy and controversy. This book, for the first time, brings together scholarly research in the economics of prevailing wages placed in historical and institutional context.
Book Synopsis Minimum Wage Regimes by : Irene Dingeldey
Download or read book Minimum Wage Regimes written by Irene Dingeldey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-06-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book goes beyond traditional minimum wage research to investigate the interplay between different country and sectoral institutional settings and actors’ strategies in the field of minimum wage policies. It asks which strategies and motives, namely free collective bargaining, fair pay and/or minimum income protection, are emphasised by social actors with respect to the regulation and adaptation of (statutory) minimum wages. Taking an actor-centered institutionalist approach, and employing cross-country comparative studies, sector studies and single country accounts of change, the book relates institutional and labour market settings, actors’ strategies and power resources with policy and practice outcomes. Looking at the key pay equity indicators of low wage development and women’s over-representation among the low paid, it illuminates our understandings about the importance of historical junctures, specific constellations of social actors, and sector- and country-specific actor strategies. Finally, it underlines the important role of social dialogue in shaping an effective minimum wage policy. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and policy-makers and practitioners in industrial relations, international human resource management, labour studies, labour market policy, inequality studies, trade union studies, European politics and political economy.
Book Synopsis The Theory of Wages in Classical Economics by : Antonella Stirati
Download or read book The Theory of Wages in Classical Economics written by Antonella Stirati and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that the wage-fund theory played no part in the theory of wages expounded by Ricardo and his predecessors. It shows classical wage theory to be analytically consistent, but different from, contemporary theory, particularly as it did not envisage an inverse relationship between employment and the real wage level, and hence a spontaneous tendency to full employment of labour. The author bases her approach not only on a reinterpretation of Smith and Ricardo, but also on the writings of Turgot, Necker, Steuart, Hume, Cantillon and other pre-classical economists.
Book Synopsis Living Wages, Equal Wages: Gender and Labour Market Policies in the United States by : Deborah M. Figart
Download or read book Living Wages, Equal Wages: Gender and Labour Market Policies in the United States written by Deborah M. Figart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wage setting has historically been a deeply political and cultural as well as economic process. This informative and accessible book explores how US wage regulations in the twentieth century took gender, race-ethnicity and class into account. Focusing on social reform movements for living wages and equal wages, it offers an interdisciplinary account of how women's work and the remuneration for that work has changed along with the massive transformations in the economy and family structures. The controversial issue of establishing living wages for all workers makes this book both a timely and indispensable contribution to this wide ranging debate, and it will surely become required reading for anyone with an interest in modern economic issues.
