Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wage-Earners Budgets: A Study of Standards and Cost of Living in New York City The study of living conditions here offered on behalf of the Greenwich House Committee on Social Investigations differs in a number of important respects from studies of standards of living in workingmen's families with which the public is already familiar. It is, to begin with, an investigation of wage-earning families in the heart of that American city in which, partly because of its size and wealth, and partly because of the limitations of Manhattan Island, the struggle for existence is most intense. In the second place its results have been obtained by methods more thorough, painstaking, and critical than it has usually been possible hitherto to use. Statistical work, as we have known it, has had the great merit of dealing with large numbers in which small errors are to a great extent self-eliminated by mutual cancellation, but it has left much to be desired on the side of exact knowledge of the concrete facts numerically expressed. Of the figures set down in Mrs. More's tables it can be said that every one stands for something not only certainly known, but also critically scrutinized and weighed before being added to the general sum of information. This critical thoroughness has been rendered possible by the limitations of the inquiry, and by the character of the relations subsisting between the investigator and the families whose economic status has been recorded.
