Book Synopsis Writings on Wade Guyton by : Tim Griffin
Download or read book Writings on Wade Guyton written by Tim Griffin and published by Jrp Ringier. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few figures have had an impact as important on our understanding of artistic production after the turn of the millennium as Wade Guyton, whose practice has widely prompted reconsiderations of longstanding models of medium-specificity, appropriation, and critical engagement--and, perhaps more provocatively, performativity and readymade gesture--in art. This volume takes stock of critical perspectives on Guyton's work over the course of the artist's career, assembling both expansive, scholarly essays and more concise, journalistic assessments by an international array of authors including Daniel Baumann, Kirsty Bell, Bettina Funcke, Tim Griffin (editor), and John Kelsey.Just as significantly, this book holds up a mirror to the rapidly changing context for Guyton's work, which in a few short years shifted from discussions of the widespread use of modernist motifs in art during the early 2000s to others revolving around the artwork, anticipating its continuous circulation as digital media became ubiquitous in art and culture alike.Published with the Kunsthalle Zrich. This book is part of the JRP Ringier Documents series.

Download or read book Wade Guyton, Guyton/Walker, Kelley Walker written by Wade Guyton and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 2004, Guyton\Walker--the artist duo of Wade Guyton (born 1972) and Kelley Walker (born 1969)--is a partnership that has remained virtually without parallel in contemporary art, in that both artists work and exhibit individually. This volume examines all facets of their output, both singly and together. Essays by Sam Pulitzer and Quinn Latimer discuss individual authorship and joint techniques, while Jack Bankowsky's text examines Guyton\Walker within a broad art-historical context. Yilmaz Dziewior's introductory essay outlines the distinctive concept of the Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition this book accompanies, and addresses the relationship between individual and joint artistic practices. Each section on the three artistic positions features photographs of the installation in Kunsthaus Bregenz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wade Guyton, Petzel, New York, 1.16.14 - 2.22.14 is the long-awaited volume that documents a one night only performance hosted at Petzel Gallery as part of Guyton’s seminal 2014 exhibition, in which the artist made long horizontal black paintings stretched to precisely fit the gallery walls. In 2007, Guyton showed a series of black paintings made with his Epson 9600 printer and covered the gallery’s concrete floor with a facsimile of his studio’s plywood floor. For the 2014 exhibition, he made five new works on linen using the same digital file from 2007, this time enlarged to accommodate the increased width of an Epson 11880. The works were turned on their sides, hung horizontally and stretched to fit the gallery walls. Two of them were jammed in a corner. In addition to the five paintings, he presented a new wood and concrete sculpture that took its form from the coat check counter at the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, where concurrently he had installed four paintings for the International. On February 17, 2014 the gallery hosted performances by James Campbell, I.U.D., and Blondes. Wade Guyton, Petzel, New York, 1.16.14 - 2.22.14 features over 400 illustrated pages of documentary footage from that performance and includes an essay by art historian Bettina Funcke entitled “Guyton’s Rooms.” The book was designed by Wade Guyton, Joseph Logan, and Zach Steinman.

Book Synopsis The Painting Factory by : Jeffrey Deitch
Download or read book The Painting Factory written by Jeffrey Deitch and published by Skira. This book was released on 2012 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first large-scale exhibition exploring contemporary abstract painting. In a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, director Jeffrey Deitch considers the reemergence of abstract painting among a broad range of artists whose work is as diverse conceptually as it is aesthetically. Looking back to Andy Warhol’s seminal Shadow, Oxidation, and Rorschach paintings as among the many touchstones that underwrite the contemporary impulse to abstraction, the show features artists such as Julie Mehretu, whose large-scale works densely layer maplike markings; Josh Smith, whose lush canvases often explore a single theme repeatedly, such as his signature; and Tauba Auerbach, whose highly formal explorations of materials challenge conventional modes of perception. Additional artists include Rudolf Stingel, Christopher Wool, Glenn Ligon, Urs Fischer, Mark Bradford, Wade Guyton, Kelley Walker, Seth Price, Kerstin Brätsch and Adele Röder, and Sterling Ruby. The exhibition catalogue features a roundtable discussion between Jeffrey Deitch, art historian Johanna Burton, and curators James Meyer and Scott Rothkopf.

Download or read book Rise of the Printers written by Mark Von Schlegell and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the exhibition at the Josef Albers Museum the artist created four paintings, which are integrated into the presentation of works by Josef Albers starting a dialogue with them. Guyton's work is connected with the tradition of Modernism, which culminated in the paintings of the ,New York School' and in Minimal Art. With sparse vocabulary he is examining the different possibilities of a visual language. At the same time Wade Guyton is testing the idea of artistic authorship: the creative process is disconnected from the artist's own hand, his paintings are programmed on a computer and then printed on classical canvas to give them a physical form.00Exhibition: Josef Albers Museum Quadrat, Bottrop, Germany (23.11.2014 - 15.02.2015).

Download or read book FAX written by João Ribas and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Though the technology for transmitting printed images and texts over distance dates from the 19th century, it was the introduction of the modern fax through commercially available machines in the 1970s that turned facsimiles into a ubiquitous communications medium for international business. Artists readily exploited its immediate, graphic, and interactive character, making it an important part of the history of telecommunications art, nestled between the legacy of mail art and the nascent practices of new media." "Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, FAX features the work of a multigenerational group of artists, architects, designers, scientists, and filmmakers who were invited to conceive of the fax machine as a tool for thinking and drawing. The book contains an essay by exhibition curator Joao Ribas and over 200 faxed pages, all transmitted via The Drawing Center's working fax line, including drawings, texts, and some seminal examples of early telecommunications art, as well as the inevitable errors of transmission, junk, and "fax lore." These works Form the core of a traveling exhibition circulated by iCI." --Book Jacket.

Download or read book Price, Seth written by Seth Price and published by Jrp Ringier. This book was released on 2010 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through paintings, sculpture, video, and media work, Seth Price underlines the production strategies, dissemination modes, and valuation patterns of art. His appropriationist work, which he rather calls a 'redistribution' of (often) pirated materials, disrupts the operations of commodity culture. Among his formats and tactics one should mention the recycling of iconic illustrations, re-duplication (from digital to vacuum-formed techniques), the re-enactment of projects, and the collaborative actions with Continuous Project (formed in 2003 with Bettina Funcke, Wade Guyton, and Joseph Logan) or other artists. This first monograph dedicated to the artist includes an essay by Michael Newman as well as Price's own critical take on his practice, given in the form of a videotaped conference that structures the presentation of his works. Published with Kunsthalle Zurich, Zurich and the Kolnischer Kunstverein, Cologne.

Download or read book Painting 2.0 written by Achim Hochdoerfer and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the resurgent interest in painting and the proliferation of new digital media in recent years, this generously illustrated book delineates painting's complex relationship with information technology. In a survey that begins in the mid-twentieth century, long before the birth of the Internet, this book traces painting’s capacity to digest and transform other media, even as its own legitimacy has been questioned. Featuring the work of numerous renowned artists, from Sigmar Polke to Nicole Eisenman and from Cy Twombly to Amy Sillman, the book examines how painting has addressed digital technology as it relates to human experience and perception, and includes three in-depth essays and additional texts by influential thinkers from the field. Comprehensive and lavishly illustrated, the book presents a wide range of works that reconsider the assumed opposition of the digital and the analog, the human and the technological, arguing that painting has served as a means to represent—and even enact—new media. This book affirms the ongoing vitality of the medium of painting in the midst of a digital world.
