Book excerpt: Cameron Park is a 416-acre municipal park located at the confluence of the Brazos and Bosque Rivers near downtown Waco, Texas. The results of this project suggest first that the park's ridge-top was completely cleared for grazing during the late 1800s and early 1900s and secondly that release of the pastures led to differential regeneration of forest cover, first in Juniperus species and then with deciduous species. This release event took place eighty to ninety years ago, coinciding almost exactly with the dedication of Cameron Park in May 1910. Additionally, regeneration of deciduous species was concentrated initially along historic fence-lines so that delayed succession has been occurring as broadleaf species just now begin to move into the interior of former pastures. The result is that regeneration of Juniperus and broadleaf species has led to a significant increase in forest cover along the ridge-top since the abandonment of the pastures.

Special attention will be paid to how Cameron Park was shaped by events such as the "City Beautiful" movement, the Great Depression, and the Civil Rights Era as well as how Cameron Park shaped the lives of Wacoans during these periods of time. The initial development of the park, 1910-1930, the decline of the park in the 1970s and 1980s, and revitalization efforts from 1985 to the present, constitute the critical time periods in Cameron Park's history. To piece together the relatively undocumented history of the park it was imperative to rely heavily on newspapers and oral and history interviews.

They participate in a variety of activities ranging from hiking to picnicking. In 2006, the Cameron Park Recreational Use Survey was administered to Cameron Park visitors via opportunistic sampling to chronicle recreational activities and user concerns in Cameron Park. Pearson's Chi Square Test of Independence determined if significant differences in preference for outdoor recreational activities exist between user groups. First, the results of this study suggest there are statistically significant differences in preference for outdoor recreational activities among African Americans, Hispanic, and Caucasians. Differences are significant in preference for 7 of 24 activities, including hiking, biking, and family gatherings. Second, there are statistically significant differences in preference for outdoor recreational activity among Cameron Park visitors with different incomes, gender, age, education, and residence. Other factors influenced by ethnicity include recreational site choice and perception of safety.
