Book excerpt: The inshore environment contains a variety of potential risks to seabirds, most notably from surface pollution and the rapidly expanding mariculture industry. The year-round distribution and habitat-use of seabirds at sea in Ireland{u2019}s inshore environment is poorly studied however. The main aims of this study were to establish the spatio-temporal distribution and habitat-use of seabirds in two contrasting, high-risk environments (i.e. Bantry Bay and the Shannon Estuary) and to assess the risks posed to these communities from surface pollutants and mussel suspension culture. Using a combination of shore and boat-based survey techniques, a number of {u2018}hot-spots{u2019} of high seabird density were identified, including the mouth of Bantry Bay and a narrow region of the inner Shannon Estuary. The relative abundance of many species groups was an order of magnitude greater in Bantry Bay than in the Shannon Estuary, possibly reflecting the presence of rich feeding grounds associated with the Irish Shelf Front at the mouth of Bantry Bay. Seasonal variations in seabird abundance differed between sites, however highest concentrations of many species occurred in autumn. The tidal cycle did not significantly influence the relative abundance of any of the species studied. Vulnerable concentrations of seabirds in areas of high risk from oil-pollution were identified. Investigations of seabird habitat-use using generalized linear and generalized additive modelling revealed that seaward distance (the distance from the most inshore point of the study site) was a significant positive determinant of total seabird distribution in both sites. Many seabird species were also positively related to distance from the nearest coast in Bantry Bay and to seabed slope in the Shannon Estuary. This indicates that the importance of individual habitat variables varies between sites due to confounding factors such as current flow. A comparison of seabird abundance and behaviour between areas of mussel suspension culture and control sites in Bantry Bay revealed that this method of aquaculture had a positive or neutral impact upon the seabird community occurring here. Conservation applications of these finding are discussed.
