Book excerpt: This book aims to show the conditions and behaviors of vulnerable and marginalized people in Bangladesh which put them at risk of HIV/AIDS infection, and what their adopted coping strategies are and how these play out. In addition, the book seeks to gain an understanding of the perceptions of civil society and policy planners with respect to vulnerability to HIV, and the necessary mitigation measures. While there is much published literature on the epidemiology and etiology for the most at-risk groups in the region, there has not yet been any in-depth research concerning the socio-cultural and geographic impacts of HIV issues in Bangladesh. Almost all of the literature shows HIV as an epidemiological problem rather than investigating it from a social or cultural point of view, and still less using qualitative methods. The present work is an endeavor to fill these gaps by providing valuable qualitative field data to demonstrate the causes of HIV risk and vulnerability, and to examine the nature of the social and locational context of HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh and to assist with health care policy planning. The book will be of use to students and researchers, studying public health, health geography, medical sociology, medical anthropology, social psychology and social epidemiology, and to professionals in the fields of development, community medicine, health management and social policy.

Book excerpt: "This book is meant for those concerned about protecting and improving the lives of the street children and it includes information for research and educational purposes. While street children receive national and international notice, it has been focused largely on social, economic and health problems of the children - poverty, lack of education, AIDS, prostitution and substance abuse. This often neglected side of street children's lives has been the focus of this book and it is in this context that the subject of street child labour and its impact on children's development is investigated."

Book excerpt: This book explores the extent, causes and characteristics of homelessness in developing countries. Bringing together a major review of literature and empirical case studies, it is invaluable for those studying, researching or working in housing, homelessness, social policy or urban poverty. Drawing on local research in nine countries in the global south, this book offers an insight into the lives of homeless people, public perceptions of homelessness, and the policies and interventions which might variously increase or reduce homelessness. Exploring the human context as well as policy and planning, it will challenge preconceptions.

Book excerpt: The problem of children left orphaned and vulnerable by HIV/AIDS is receiving increasing attention worldwide. Yet, even as the global community acknowledges the human tragedy that orphaning on the scale heralded by the HIV/AIDS epidemic represents, it is widely speculated that large numbers of orphans may themselves represent a security challenge. By reducing the resources available to children and destabilising the institutions on which they depend - such as the family, school and community - it is argued that HIV/AIDS may severely affect children's development, creating generations of disenfranchised and potentially dysfunctional young people left with little alternative but engage in criminal and other threatening activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a study of street children’s involvement as workers in Bangladeshi organised crime groups based on a three-year ethnographic study in Dhaka. The book argues that ‘mastaans’ are Bangladeshi mafia groups that operate in a market for crime, violence and social protection. It considers the crimes mastaans commit, the ways they divide labour, and how and why street children become involved in these groups. The book explores how street children are hired by ‘mastaans’, to carry weapons, sell drugs, collect extortion money, commit political violence and conduct contract killings. The book argues that these young people are neither victims nor offenders; they are instead ‘illicit child labourers’, doing what they can to survive on the streets. This book adds to the emerging fields of the sociology of crime and deviance in South Asia and ‘Southern criminology’.
