Book excerpt: Results are presented from studies of several problem areas which are related to helicopter hovering performance prediction. A working hypothesis is described for including the tip vortex core effect in a vortex wake analysis and it is shown that the tip vortex geometry in the near wake can be calculated with good accuracy for rotors having fewer than five blades. A hovering model rotor test facility of reduced size is described. Data from this facility include measured pressure distributions on the tip of a single-bladed rotor. (Author).

Book excerpt: A numerical method based on the axisymmetric, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is combined with a lifting surface code to predict the vortex wake of hovering rotors. The lifting surface code, AMI Hover, is used to obtain the circulation distribution on the blade. This circulation distribution is fed into the Navier-Stokes code to compute the vortex wake under this specified circulation distribution. An iteration approach is used between these two codes to converge the circulation distribution and the shape of the vortex wake. A relaxation scheme is developed to resolve the instability encountered among the tip vortices. A reconcentration scheme is used to solve the diffusion problem due to the strong artificial viscosity. The results from the present method are compared with experimental data obtained by smoke-flow visualization and hot-wire measurements for several rotor blade configurations. The comparisons show that the present method is able to predict the complex wake system shed by a hovering rotor.

Book excerpt: This report presents viscous, three-dimensional numerical solutions of two related problems of a helicopter rotor. An implicit, finite-difference numerical procedure is used for the solution of the thin layer Navier-Stokes equations to simulate the flowfield solutions of (1) helicopter rotor blade encountering a passing concentrated line vortex, and (2) a lifting hovering rotor, at both sub- and super-critical flowfield conditions. For the first problem, the Euler equations were also solved independently to assess the importance of the viscous effects in the interacting flowfield. A prescribed vortex method is adopted to preserve the structure of the interacting vortex. Both parallel and oblique blade-vortex interactions have been calculated. The second problem considered is that of calculating lifting hovering rotor flowfields without using any ad hoc wake models. The induced effects of the wake, including the interaction of tip vortices with successive blades, are captured as a part of the overall flowfield solution and hence no wake models are used. In order to preserve the structure of the vortex wake, a completely upwind finite-difference numerical procedure is used for this problem. Comparison of the numerical results show excellent agreement with the experimental data and with the previously published Navier-Stokes calculations that used a simple wake model. (jhd).

Book excerpt: An analytic investigation to generalize wake geometry of a helicopter rotor in steady level forward flight and to demonstrate the influence of wake deformation in the prediction of rotor airloads and performance is described. Volume 1 presents a first level generalized wake model based on theoretically predicted tip vortex geometries for a selected representative blade design. The tip vortex distortions are generalized in equation form as displacements from the classical undistorted tip vortex geometry in terms of vortex age, blade azimuth, rotor advance ratio, thrust coefficient, and number of blades. These equations were programmed to provide distorted wake coordinates at very low cost for use in rotor airflow and airloads prediction analyses. The sensitivity of predicted rotor airloads, performance, and blade bending moments to the modeling of the tip vortex distortion are demonstrated for low to moderately high advance ratios for a representative rotor and the H-34 rotor. Comparisons with H-34 rotor test data demonstrate the effects of the classical, predicted distorted, and the newly developed generalized wake models on airloads and blade bending moments. Use of distorted wake models results in the occurrence of numerous blade-vortex interactions on the forward and lateral sides of the rotor disk. The significance of these interactions is related to the number and degree of proximity to the blades of the tip vortices. The correlation obtained with the distorted wake models (generalized and predicted) is encouraging.

Book excerpt: The wake has a strong influence on the aerodynamics of a helicopter rotor, andthe accurate prediction of its geometry and the resulting induced velocity fieldis extremely important for rotorcraft aerodynamic analysis. In this thesis, a newhigher-order, free-wake method for rotor aerodynamic analysis is presented. Themethod uses elements of distributed vorticity to model the lifting surfaces and theassociated wake. The use of such higher-order spanwise elements ensures higherresolution compared to traditional filament-based free-wake analysis and does notrequire explicit vortex core modeling with a user-specified core size. Since themethod uses a full-span, singularity-free, relaxed wake, it can resolve the effect ofon-blade, partial-span devices. The free-wake method is validated in both hover and forward flight againstmeasured data from well-documented experiments. In hover, the blade spanwiselift coefficients predicted by the free-wake analysis correlate well with the measureddata from the classic Caradonna-Tung model rotor experiment. The figure of merit, which is a measure of rotor efficiency, predicted by the present method is comparedto that from the experiments conducted by Knight and Hefner, and the correlationsare found to be quite good given the level of fidelity of this method, which is basedon potential flow theory. Rotor downwash, which is one of the most importantconsiderations in rotor aerodynamic analysis, is predicted very well by the free-wakemethod when compared to measured data from a full-scale rotor test performedby Boatwright. These correlation studies provide a lot of promise as to the abilityof the method in predicting the challenging aerodynamics of a helicopter rotor inhover.Validation studies are also performed to assess the accuracy of the free-wakeanalysis in predicting downwash distribution in forward flight. Comparison ofnumerical predictions with experimental data requires the rotor to be trimmed tothe conditions recorded in the experiment. To ensure this, the free-wake programis coupled with RCAS, a comprehensive helicopter analysis code developed by theiiiUS Army, in order to take advantage of its robust trim algorithm, among othercapabilities. The coupling is achieved through what is called a loose-couplingmethodology, whereby data is exchanged at the end of each coupling iteration orconverged rotor revolution. The downwash distributions predicted by the presentmethod are compared to measured data for a model rotor at various advancedratios and thrust levels taken at the U.S. Army/NASA Langley Research Center(LaRC) facility. The free-wake method not only captures the important phenomenaobserved in the experiments but the results also correlate well with the measureddata both in terms of magnitude and distribution. However, exceptions exist atthe highest advance ratio, where other methods also demonstrate poor correlations. The results from this free-wake analysis are also compared to predictions by otherexisting methods such as the University of Maryland free-wake method (UMDFW)and the vortex transport method (VTM). The present method yields resultscomparable to the ones obtained using VTM, both of which correlate better withmeasurements than does UMD-FW.Sensitivity studies show that the blade panel density and azimuthal time-stepsize do not have a significant influence on the solution fidelity. In addition, free-wakeanalyses with the azimuthal time-step size of = 3o demonstrate the robustnessof the method even with small time-steps, which is important for certain problemsincluding rotor acoustics. The thesis concludes with a discussion on the capability of the new free-wakemethod in resolving on-blade, partial-span devices. An analysis of a 2-bladed rotorwith a partial-span deflection is performed and the resulting changes in sectionalloadings, downwash distribution, wake geometry and aggregate performance parametersare highlighted to demonstrate its potential as a tool for future rotorcraftanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rotor blade-vortex interaction problem and the resulting impulsive airloads which generate undesirable noise levels are discussed. A numerical lifting surface method to predict unsteady aerodynamic forces induced on a finite aspect ratio rectangular wing by a straight, free vortex placed at an arbitrary angle in a subsonic incompressible free stream is developed first. Using a rigid wake assumption, the wake vortices are assumed to move downsteam with the free steam velocity. Unsteady load distributions are obtained which compare favorably with the results of planar lifting surface theory. The vortex lattice method has been extended to a single bladed rotor operating at high advance ratios and encountering a free vortex from a fixed wing upstream of the rotor. The predicted unsteady load distributions on the model rotor blade are generally in agreement with the experimental results. This method has also been extended to full scale rotor flight cases in which vortex induced loads near the tip of a rotor blade were indicated. In both the model and the full scale rotor blade airload calculations a flat planar wake was assumed which is a good approximation at large advance ratios because the downwash is small in comparison to the free stream at large advance ratios. The large fluctuations in the measured airloads near the tip of the rotor blade on the advance side is predicted closely by the vortex lattice method.
