The test facilities at the AEDC, including the VKF, are operated by a private company, ARO, Inc. (subsidiary of Sverdrup and Parcel, Inc.) under a contract with the U.S. Air Force. The AEDC's main purpose is to provide advanced and large-scale test facilities for use by the Air Force, other government agencies, and contractors. The VKF's responsibility is in the fields of supersonic and hypersonic aerodynamics and hypervelocity impact. The tests which have been conducted in the VKF included support for the following major weapon and space systems: USAF; F103, F105, F106, B58, B70, X15, Dynasoar, Atlas, Titan, Minuteman, Skybolt U.S. Army: Redstone, Pershing, Nike-Zeus U.S. Navy: Polaris, Sparrow NASA: X15, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Saturn Actually, components of practically all of the existing and now planned weapon and space systems have been tested in the VKF.

Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 7: Hypersonic Flow Research compiles papers presented at a conference on hypersonics held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1961. This book discusses the low Reynolds number effects, chemical kinetics effects, inviscid flow calculations, and experimental techniques relating to the problems in acquiring an understanding of hypersonic flow. The structure and composition of hypersonic wakes with attendant complex chemical kinetic effects is only briefly mentioned. This text consists of five parts. Parts A to C comprise of theoretical papers on the problems of calculating flow fields at hypersonic speeds. The experimental techniques that are of immediate practical interest in view of the difficulty of flight testing are discussed in Parts D and E. This publication is beneficial to engineers involved in advanced design problems.

Uselton and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind tunnel tests were conducted to provide support interference information for planning and directing wind tunnel tests at supersonic and hypersonic Mach numbers. Sting-length and sting-diameter effects on base and surface pressures of a blunt 6-deg cone with a sliced base were investigated at Mach numbers 2, 3, 5, and 8. Dynamic stability tests on a blunt 7-deg cone were also conducted at Mach numbers 2, 5, and 8. The objectives of the 7-deg cone tests were to define critical sting lengths as determined by the measurement of dynamic stability derivatives, static pitching moment, and base pressure. Two frequencies of oscillation were investigated, and data were obtained for laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary-layer conditions at the model base. The data from the 6- and 7-deg cone tests showed that the critical sting length depended on the interference indicator, Mach number, angle of attack, state of the model boundary layer, and frequency of oscillation. The critical sting length was generally less for models with turbulent boundary layers than for those with laminar boundary layers. A critical sting length of 2.5 model diameters was determined to be suitable for all test conditions that produced a turbulent boundary layer at or ahead of the model base.

Book excerpt: The report is the first in a two-part series of technical reports on the dynamics and aerodynamics of free-fall stores using freely spinning stabilizers. Presented are the results of recent wind-tunnel measurements of the normal force, pitching moment and Magnus force and moment on the M823 Research Store in transonic flow. Comparisons are made between configurations equipped with fixed and freely spinning stabilizers, with regard to sign and relative magnitude of the Magnus force and moment. A method is presented and applied whereby the Magnus force and moment are corrected for flow angularity.

Book excerpt: Application of three-dimensional inviscid and viscous (laminar boundary layer) analyses for cold wall hypersonic flows over sharp cones at incidence is presented relative to experimental data, showing surface upwash angles and entrained vortex formation leading to crossflow-induced boundary-layer transition. Three-dimensional neutral inviscid stability theory for stationary disturbances is used to calculate the angular orientation of the entrained vortices in the boundary layer while a maximum crossflow Reynolds number concept is applied for correlation of the onset to vortex formation due to crossflow instability.

Its application to various linear problems and nonlinear problems involving phase transitions is described by means of several idealized problems. The method is basically a refined version of the well-known Karman-Pohlhausen integral technique in boundary-layer theory, and represents a further development of the basic ideas previously exploited to calculate skin friction and heat transfer in boundary-layer flows. The approximate solutions obtained are extensively compared with existing exact solutions and those of the classical Karman-Pohlhausen method. From the simplicity and accuracy of the present method as demonstrated in the results, the potential utility of the method in providing simple, engineering solutions to complex aerodynamic heating problems can be inferred.
