Book excerpt: This open access book explores how research and policymaking in the field of migrant integration have developed historically and how this interrelationship plays out in the strongly politicised climate of opinions on migration in Europe. It features interdisciplinary theoretical contributions as well as original empirical studies on research-policy dialogues at both the EU and country level. The chapters study not only how the dialogue between research and policy is structured (such as advisory bodies, research agencies, and ad-hoc committees), but also how these dialogues affect policymaking and the development of migrant integration research itself as well. The analysis reveals profound changes in the dialogue structures associated with the research-policy nexus in the domain of migrant integration. On the one hand, dialogue structures have become more ad-hoc, often established in response to distinct political events or to specific problems. On the other, politicisation has not thwarted all efforts to develop more institutionalised dialogue structures between producers and users of knowledge. In addition, research has contributed to policymaking in very different ways in various European countries. This edited volume is unique in this effort to reflect on the impact of research-policy dialogues both on the development of migrant integration policies as well as on migrant integration research. It will be of importance to scholars in this field as well as to policymakers and other stakeholders involved in migrant integration policymaking.

New visa restrictions, travel bans, and other regulations were imposed by national governments. At the local level, towns and cities responded in different ways: some resisted national policy by declaring themselves “sanctuary cities”, while others supported exclusionary policies. These different responses influenced refugees’ ability to settle and become integrated. The Refugees in Towns (RIT) project at Tufts University explores local urban integration experiences, drawing on the knowledge and perspectives of refugees and citizens in towns around the world. Since 2017, more than 30 RIT case studies have deepened our local knowledge about the factors that enable or obstruct integration, and the ways in which migrants and hosts co-exist, adapt, and struggle with integration. In this Special Issue, seven articles explore urban integration in towns in Europe (Frankfurt-Rödelheim, Germany; Newcastle, UK; Ambertois, France; Italy’s cities; and Belgrade, Serbia) and in North America: Bhutanese refugee-hosting US cities, and Antigonish, Canada. The papers explore how refugees and citizens interact; the role of officials and politicians in enabling or obstructing integration; the social, economic, and cultural impact of migration; and the ways—inclusive or exclusive—locals have responded.

Daher untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit anhand verschiedener Perspektiven die ökonomische Integration von Migrantinnen und Migranten in Deutschland. Hanna Brenzel zeigt, dass Unterschiede in der beruflichen Mobilität die Lohnentwicklung von Migrantinnen/Migranten und Einheimischen beeinflussen, was wiederum zu Lohnunterschieden beiträgt. Zudem werden die Einkommensunterschiede zwischen Migranten und Einheimischen durch unterschiedliche Persönlichkeitsmerkmale beeinflusst. Schließlich verdeutlicht ihre Arbeit, dass Unterschiede in den Arbeitsmarktintegrationsprozessen zwischen Migrantinnen und Migranten, die als Single migrieren und jene, die im Familienkontext migrieren, bestehen. Aufbauend auf diesen drei Haupterkenntnissen fördert Brenzel nicht nur das Verständnis von Lohnunterschieden, sondern erweitert auch das bestehende Wissen um die Integration in den Arbeitsmarkt von oft vernachlässigten Gruppen, indem sie diese in den Vordergrund rückt.

Dieses Buch will einen durch Zahlen belegten objektiven Blick auf die aktuellen Umstände werfen. Zunächst wird dafür die sozialwissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit den theoretischen Begriffen der Migration, Assimilation und Integration überblicksmäßig vorgestellt, um die Ideengeschichte der modernen Definitionen zu verdeutlichen. Daraufhin wird ein historischer Abriss über die grundsätzlichen Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der deutschen und französischen staatlichen Integrationsmodelle gegeben, ohne den auch die aktuelle Debatte nicht nachzuvollziehen wäre. Dabei wird auch knapp auf die Rolle der EU eingegangen, die mittlerweile wesentliche Aspekte der Migrations- und Integrationspolitik ihrer Mitgliedsstaaten beeinflussen kann. Der eigentliche Vergleich beider Staaten wird dann mithilfe der theoretischen Grundlagen an einzelnen Themengebieten bearbeitet. Hierbei wird sowohl auf die staatlichen Maßnahmen als auch auf ihren vermeintlichen Erfolg oder Misserfolg in der Wahrnehmung der betroffenen Akteure eingegangen. Letztendlich wird auch die Debatte um die sogenannte ‚Leitkultur‘ und um ‚nationale Identität‘ einem kritischen Blick unterworfen. Ziel der Untersuchung soll es sein, die Integrationsmodelle beider Staaten sowie ihren Wandel vergleichend zu analysieren, Defizite und Vorteile auszumachen und einen kritischen Ausblick auf die bevorstehende Entwicklung und damit letztendlich auf mögliche Handlungshinweise zu geben. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, mit welchen Maßnahmen die Integration von Einwanderern bestmöglich gelingen kann.

Yet 'minority writing', with its distinctive renegotiation of traditional concepts of cultural identity, is far from a recent phenomenon in German literature. A hundred years previously, the intense involvement of German-Jewish intellectuals in cultural and political discourses on Jewish identity put a clear stamp on German modernism. This book is the first to unfold literary parallels between these two riveting periods in German cultural history. Drawing on the philosophical oeuvre of Jean-Luc Nancy, a comparative reading of texts by, amongst others, Beer-Hofmann, Kermani, Özdamar, Roth, Schnitzler, and Zaimoglu examines a variety of literary approaches to the thorny issue of cultural identity, while developing an overarching perspective on the ‘politics of literature’.
