Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our increasingly litigious society, churches and religious organizations need to pay careful attention to the changing legal landscape. Church Hiring and Volunteer Selection addresses the growing issue of church hiring (and firing) practices and provides a user-friendly guide to educate church members in how to avoid negligent claims. This is not just a legal handbook; Lynn R. Buzzard and Susan M. Edwards write in a theological context and address the mission of the church in today's society. While written from a Baptist perspective, all demoninations will find the book valuable. Buzzard and Edwards discuss hiring in various special contexts, including the hiring of child-care workers and volunteer selection, and include a section devoted to minimizing liability in the hiring process. Buzzard and Edwards discuss the application to churches of various pieces of federal legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Equal Pay Act, and the family and Medical Leave Act. A 78-page index contains numerous forms that can be used in the hiring process. Published by J. W. Edwards Inc. jointly with the Church-State Resource Center, Norman A. Wiggins School of Law, Campbell University, and the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a richly detailed contribution to the understanding of healthy volunteer experiences in clinical drug trials in the UK. Contemporary society, especially the West, has seen a significant increase in the production and use of pharmaceutical products, particularly for disease treatment. However, despite the large numbers of people involved, particularly in the UK, very little is known about their experiences in commercial phase I clinical drug trials. Shadreck Mwale critiques common conceptions of the terms ‘volunteer’ and ‘altruism’ as used in policy and practice of human involvement in clinical trials and calls for an awareness of the complexity of the terms and how the social contexts participants find themselves in shape acts of voluntarism. Based on extensive empirical evidence and conceptual analysis, the book presents new insights into the lives of healthy volunteers, challenges bioethical conceptions and generates new frameworks for policy and practice of FIHCTs. It will be of particular interest to scholars and practitioners in the wider social sciences, medical Sociology and medical anthropology, pharmacology and bioethics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While vast numbers of nurses across the globe contribute in all areas of healthcare delivery from primary care to acute and long-term care in community settings, there are significant differences in how they are educated, as well as the precise nature of their practice. This comprehensive handbook provides a research-informed and international perspective on the critical issues in contemporary nurse education. As an applied discipline, nursing is implemented differently depending on the social, political and cultural climate in any given context. These factors impact on education, as much as on practice, and are reflected in debates around the value of accredited programmes, and on-the-job training, apprenticeship, undergraduate and postgraduate pathways into nursing. Engaging with these debates amongst others, the authors collected here discuss how, through careful design and delivery of nursing curricula, nurses can be prepared to understand complex care processes, complex healthcare technologies, complex patient needs and responses to therapeutic interventions, and complex organizations. The book discusses historical perspectives on how nurses should be educated; contemporary issues facing educators; teaching and learning strategies; the politics of nurse education; education for advanced nursing practice; global approaches; and educating for the future. Bringing together leading authorities from across the world to reflect on past, present and future approaches to nurse education and nursing pedagogy, this handbook provides a cutting-edge overview for all educators, researchers and policy-makers concerned with nurse education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business Writing in the Digital Age fills an urgent need to equip business and MBA students to write more effectively in a style that works for today′s business world. Using a readable, highly accessible approach and numerous concrete examples, this book frames writing as a strategic tool to accomplish goals. Readers learn a step-by-step system that tells them what to say, and how to say it in every circumstance. At the same time they learn how to improve their technical skills by applying practical techniques rather than grammatical rules. In today′s business world, success depends on writing. Those who write well are better able to win opportunities, establish their reputation, persuade others to their viewpoint and build relationships. They collaborate, manage and lead more effectively. Writing well also equips businesspeople to function in a global marketplace and reach increasingly diverse audiences. This book builds readers′ confidence and capabilities. No matter what their starting point, they absorb a solid foundation that applies to all writing. They also learn the specifics of crafting messages and documents that range from the traditional, like letters and proposals, to media such as email, blogs, web sites, PowerPoint and social networking. This broad coverage makes the material relevant and compelling. Students also develop tools to keep improving on their own, and to handle new communication channels as they emerge. Business Writing in the Digital Age helps teachers stay current with a changing media landscape. They can use it as a complete guide to writing development, drawing on the practice opportunities and group projects supplied, or assign students to work with some--or all the material--on their own.

Bringing together cutting-edge authors from academia, legal practice and the technology industry, Future Law explores and leverages the power of human imagination in understanding, critiquing and improving the legal responses to technological change. It focuses on the practical difficulties of applying law, policy and ethical structures to emergent technologies both now and in the future. It covers crucial current issues such as big data ethics, ubiquitous surveillance and the Internet of Things, and disruptive technologies such as autonomous vehicles, DIY genetics and robot agents. By using examples from popular culture such as books, films, TV and Instagram - including 'Black Mirror', 'Disney Princesses', 'Star Wars', 'Doctor Who' and 'Rick and Morty' - it brings hypothetical examples to life. And it asks where law might go next and to regulate new-phase technology such as artificial intelligence, 'smart homes' and automated emotion recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fierce struggle between the British 1st Airborne Division and the superior German forces in and around Arnhem is well documented. This book tells of the role played in the battle for Oosterbeek and the bridge at Arnhem itself by the men of the Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR). These men were already experienced soldiers who volunteered to join the airborne forces and take the fight to the Germans in a totally new regiment. The men of the GPR were predominantly SNCOs trained to fly wooden assault gliders into occupied territory. Once on the ground they were expected to go into battle with the troops they had delivered onto the Landing Zone. During the Arnhem operation they were involved in the initial defense of the LZs, before fighting house to house leading mixed groups of infantrymen, engineers and medics. In so doing they suffered extensive losses from which the Regiment never fully recovered. This book tells their story in their own words from the moment they landed on Dutch soil through the fierce fighting all around the ever shrinking perimeter until the survivors of the GPR proudly marked the route out for the battered survivors of 1st Airborne Division as they escaped over the Rhine.
