Book excerpt: The U.S. Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program collects sample plot data on all forest ownerships across the United States. Its primary objective is to determine the extent, condition, volume, growth, and depletion of timber on the Nation's forest land. The standard for distributing FIA data is the Forest Inventory and Analysis Database (FIADB). FIADB data for individual States can be downloaded from the FIA DataMart at http: //fi a.fs.fed.us/toolsdata/ default.asp as Microsoft Access databases which can be used to generate estimates of forest area, number of trees, volume, biomass, growth, removals, and mortality. The methodology used to estimate live-tree gross, net, and sound volume for the 24 states inventoried by the Northern Research Station's (NRS) FIA unit is documented. Sound volume is of particular interest because it is used in live-tree biomass and carbon estimates. The NRS currently uses four volume equations for each of four geographic regions

The tree attribute models are coupled with FIA's national inventory of sampled trees to produce estimates of tree growing-stock volume, biomass, and carbon, which are available in the Forest Inventory and Analysis database (FIADB; http://fiatools.fs.fed.us). To address an increasing need for accurate and easy-to-use documentation of relevant tree attribute models, needed individual tree gross volume, sound volume, biomass (including components), and carbon models for species in the United States are compiled and described in this publication with accompanying electronic files on a CD-ROM (13.4 MB Zip) included with the publication. This report describes models currently in use as of 2010. These models are subject to change as the FIADB and associated tree attribute models are improved.

This publication represents a milestone in the beginning of the harmonization process towards data transparency within the forestry sector in Latin America and the Caribbean and constitutes the first collaborative effort of a network of NFI experts and collaborators in the region.

It alters the energy balance and influences climate at local, regional and global scales. In 2008, urban population exceeded the rural population. In 2050, 70% of the world population will live in urban centers. The number of megacities (10 million inhabitants) increased from three in 1975 to 19 in 2007, and is projected to be 27 in 2025. Rapid urbanization is altering the ecosystem C budget. Yet, urban ecosystems have a large C sink capacity in soils and biota. Judicious planning and effective management can enhance C pool in urban ecosystems, and off-set some of the anthropogenic emissions. Principal components with regards to C sequestration include home lawns and turfs, urban forests, green roofs, park and recreational/sports facilities and urban agriculture.
