It is also certain that actual performance characteristics will not always be the same as those predicted by the designer. Herein lies the need for performance flight testing. Performance flight testing is defined as the process of determining aircraft performance characteristics, or in a more modern sense, evaluation of the energy gaining and losing capability of the aircraft. Determination of aircraft performance is dependent upon our knowledge of fundamentals in several different scientific disciplines. In order to predict or measure an aircraft's performance, we must be able to estimate the aerodynamic forces involved. This requires knowledge of the properties and behavior of the fluid medium in which we operate, i.e., the earth's atmosphere. Therefore, we must study atmospheric science, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics. Performance prediction or measurement requires knowledge of the aircraft propulsion system. Hence, we must be familiar with the theory and operation of basic turbine and turbine variant engines, reciprocating internal-combustion engines, and propeller theory. We must also understand the basic measurements, instrumentation techniques, and equipment used to gather the data needed to determine an aircraft's performance.

Book excerpt: Many of the research aircraft flown since the late 1940s have been air launched, rocket powered vehicles which have been landed power-off on one of the dry lakebeds in the Edwards complex. Most of the landing patterns for these aircraft have been characterized by high airspeeds, high descent rates, and low lift to drag ratios. Pattern shapes have not been consistent. That is, some aircraft entered on a base leg with only a 90-degree turn to final; some straight in approaches have been flown; also, 180 deg, 270 deg, and 360 deg patterns have been used. Pattern characteristics have been dictated by the aircraft performance, operational policies, and data requirements. However, whatever the characteristics, it is obvious from the high risk of power off approaches that a simulator aircraft for practicing approaches is an absolute safety requirement. Simulation is especially important prior to the first flight of a new aircraft, or prior to the checkout flight of a new pilot in a proven aircraft. Also, the frequency of flights of air launched vehicles is usually low (not more than two flights per month). Therefore, simulation is valuable for maintaining proficiency in these types of approaches in between actual test flights.

Book excerpt: In 1967, the USAF Test Pilot School inaugurated an introductory soaring program which provided each student with about three hours of sailplane flying. The program was conceived to expose student test pilots and flight test engineers to an additional type of aircraft with flying characteristics unlike any other in the school curriculum. TPS students are regularly flying aircraft whose lift-to-drag ratios (L/D) vary respectively from 2.2:1 (T-38 Low L/D) to 11:1 (A-37). The soaring program completes the higher end of this spectrum with aircraft having an L/D of 36:1 (Grob 103). The soaring program lends itself effectively to the investigation of nonsteady state stability and control flight testing techniques. This type of testing is presently applied to the T-38 when it is configured to simulate a power limited or powerless aerospace vehicle. Since the motive power of a sailplane is derived solely from gravity, this nonsteady state test method is the only way of determining the stability and control characteristics. The lifting body and space shuttle concepts dictate a gliding, power-off approach and landing pattern. Consequently, NASA initiated a mandatory soaring program for their lifting body test pilots. Experience gained in the TPS soaring program is likewise expected to benefit and better prepare the school graduate for such a test program. It also is a valuable background for operations where flame-out patterns may be required. The meteorological state of the atmosphere plays a significant role in soaring flight. The conditions that exist to produce lift are of vital interest to the soaring pilot. Consequently, one of the benefits to be realized from a soaring program is an increased awareness and appreciation of the meteorology of flight.

The major purpose of these tests are development and/or verification of pilot techniques, forming performance estimates for the flight manual, and verifying compliance, or lack of compliance, with contractual guarantees or military specifications or FAA requirements. Besides normal takeoffs and landings, a complete series of tests will include refused takeoffs (high speed aborts), crosswind operations, wet/icy runway tests, barrier tests, and engine out operations. This chapter will not cover the specifics of such parameters as refusal speeds, minimum control speeds, or critical runway lengths, since these will be covered in detail during the "engine out" phase of instruction.

Book excerpt: As spinning is still involved in around 60% of all aircraft accidents (BFU, 1985 and Belcastro, 2009), this aerodynamic phenomenon is still not fully understood. As U.S. and European Certification Specifications do not require recoveries from fully developed spins of Normal Category aeroplanes, certification test flights will not discover aeroplane mass and centre of gravity combinations which may result in unrecoverable spins. This book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the spin phenomenon through investigating the spin regime for normal, utility and aerobatic aircraft, and to explain what happens to the aircraft in terms of the aerodynamics, flight mechanics and the aircraft stability. The approach used is to vary the main geometric parameters such as the centre of gravity position and the aeroplane’s mass across the flight envelope, and to investigate the subsequent effect on the main spin characteristic parameters such as the angle of attack, pitch angle, sideslip angle, rotational rates, and recovery time. First of all, a literature review sums up the range of technical aspects that affect the problem of spinning. It reviews the experimental measurement techniques used, theoretical methods developed and flight test results obtained by previous researchers. The published results have been studied to extract the effect on spinning of aircraft geometry, control surface effectiveness, flight operational parameters and atmospheric effects. Consideration is also made of the influence on human performance of spinning, the current spin regulations and the available training material for pilots. A conventional-geometry, single-engine low-wing aeroplane, the basic trainer Fuji FA-200-160, has been instrumented with a proven digital flight measurement system and 27 spins have been systematically conducted inside and outside the certified flight envelope. The accuracy of the flight measurements is ensured through effective calibration, and the choice of sensors has varied through the study, with earlier sensors suffering from more drift than the current sensors (Belcastro, 2009 and Schrader, 2013). In-flight parameter data collected includes left and right wing α and β-angles, roll-pitch-yaw angles and corresponding rates, all control surface deflections, vertical speeds, altitude losses and the aeroplane’s accelerations in all three directions. Such data have been statistically analysed. The pitch behaviour has been mathematically modelled on the basis of the gathered flight test data. Nine observations have been proposed. These mainly cover the effects of centre of gravity and aircraft mass variations on spin characteristic behaviour. They have all been proven as true through the results of this thesis. The final observation concerns the generalisation of the Fuji results, to the spin behaviour of other aircraft in the same category. These observations can be used to improve flight test programmes, aircraft design processes, flight training materials and hence contribute strongly to better flight safety.
