Book excerpt: Wake effects cause wind turbine generators (WTGs) within a wind power plant (WPP) to produce different levels of active power and subsequent reactive power capabilities. Further, the impedance between a WTG and the point of interconnection (POI)-which depends on the distance between them-impacts the WPP's reactive power injection capability at the POI. This paper proposes a voltage control scheme for a WPP based on the available reactive current of the doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) and its impacts on the POI to improve the reactive power injection capability of the WPP. In this paper, a design strategy for modifying the gain of DFIG controller is suggested and the comprehensive properties of these control gains are investigated. In the proposed scheme, the WPP controller, which operates in a voltage control mode, sends the command signal to the DFIGs based on the voltage difference at the POI. The DFIG controllers, which operate in a voltage control mode, employ a proportional controller with a limiter. The gain of the proportional controller is adjusted depending on the available reactive current of the DFIG and the series impedance between the DFIG and the POI. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated for various disturbances such as a reactive load connection and grid fault using an EMTP-RV simulator. Furthermore, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme promptly recovers the POI voltage by injecting more reactive power after a disturbance than the conventional scheme.

Conventional dq axis current control using voltage source converters for both the grid side and the rotor side of the DFIG are analyzed and simulated. DFIG operation is investigated under balanced and unbalanced system disturbances. A conventional d-axis and q-axis control applied to a voltage source converter (VSC) during a system imbalance exhibits oscillations in the stiff DC link voltage as well as in the real and reactive powers of the converter. Multiple advanced control methods are explored and compared for imbalance operations. An advanced control technique utilizing both positive and negative sequence domain is evaluated. The approach demonstrates the stabilization of the DC link voltage to a greater extent during a disturbance but is more sluggish than the conventional control. An innovative control strategy that employs the technique of direct power control (DPC) is also investigated. This control achieves real and reactive power stability with simple active and reactive power control variables replacing the current control loops in the conventional case. A modified DPC algorithm is proposed to eliminate the current harmonics created by DPC during system disturbances. The DPC is further extended to the rotor-side converter of the DFIG thus controlling the complete system using this technique. The DPC is implemented using a three-phase converter designed on a PCB using Eagle®. A Texas Instruments® TMS320F2812 DSP is used to implement the control algorithm. The converter is tested for ride through capability using an industrial power corruptor. A special type of induction generator, called a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), is used extensively for high-power wind applications. They are used more and more in wind turbine applications due to ease controllability, high energy efficiency and improved power quality. This thesis aims to develop a method of a field orientation scheme for control both the active and reactive powers of a DFIG driven by a wind turbine.The proposed control system consists of a wind turbine that drives a DFIG connected to the utility grid through AC-DC-AC link. The main control objective is to regulate the dc link voltage for operation at maximum available wind power.This is achieved by controlling the and axes components of voltages and currents for both rotor side and line side converters using PI controllers. The complete dynamic model of the proposed system is described in detail. Computer simulations have been carried out in order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed system during the variation of wind speed. The results prove that , better overall performances are achieved, quick recover from wind speed disturbances in addition to good tracking ability. Generally, any abnormalities associated with grid asymmetrical faults are going to affect the system performance considerably. During grid faults, unbalanced currents cause negative effects like overheating problems and mechanical stress due to high torque pulsations that can damage the rotor shaft, gearbox or blade assembly. Therefore, the dynamic model of the DFIG, driven by a wind turbine during grid faults has been analyzed and developed using the method of symmetrical components. The dynamic performance of the DFIG during unbalanced grid conditions is analyzed and described in detail using digital simulations. A novel fault ride-through (FRT) capability is proposed (i.e. the ability of the power system to remain connected to the grid during faults) with suitable control strategy in this thesis. In this scheme, the input mechanical energy of the wind turbine during grid faults is stored and utilized at the moment of fault clearance, instead of being dissipated in the resistors of the crowbar circuit as in the existing FRT schemes. The power and voltage quality of a wind power system consisting of Induction Generator (IG) based wind turbine (IGWT), IGWT with voltage control device and Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind turbine (DFIGWT) are presented in this work. Blade pitch angle control to limit the output power at turbine's nominal power is also presented. It is reported that the DFIG-based wind turbine system can smooth the output power and also maintain the terminal voltage at a desired level, as DFIG with two back-to-back voltage source converters that use IGBTs and a capacitor acts as the DC voltage source has real and reactive power control abilities. The comparative results show that DFIGWT-based wind farm (DFIG_WF) has the best response, IGWT-based wind farm (IGWF) with voltage control device has better and IGWF has the worst response. Results indicate that the fluctuation of output power at higher rated rotor speed (near turbine's base wind speed) and terminal voltage are almost nil for DFIG_WF. All the analysis were carried out using SimPowerSystem tool box in MATLAB.

Book excerpt: Recently, scientists and academics are discovering progressive improvements in the arena of wind power technology economically and reliably, allowing them to produce electricity focusing on renewable energy resources. Wind turbines (WT) using the Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIGs) have attracted particular attention because of their advantages such as variable speed constant frequency (VSCF) operation, independent control capabilities for maximum power point tracking (MPPT), active and reactive power controls, and voltage control strategy at the point of common coupling (PCC). When such resources have to be integrated into the existing power system, the operation becomes more challenging, particularly in terms of stability, security, and reliability. A DFIG system with its control strategies is simulated on MATLAB software. This entails the rapid control prototype testing of grid-connected, variable speed DFIG wind turbines to investigate the WT,Äôs steady-state and dynamic behavior under normal and disturbed wind conditions. To augment the transient stability of DFIG, the simulation results for the active and reactive power of conventional controllers are compared with the adaptive tracking, self-tuned feed-forward PI controller model for optimum performance. Conclusive outcomes manifest the superior robustness of the feed-forward PI controller in terms of rising time, settling time, and overshoot value.
