Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to bring together in one volume some of the more recent knowledge of the cellular and biochemical constit uents of sheep's blood. Limitations of the space available have precluded a complete discus sion, but a number of good reviews have been published within the last few years on certain specific aspects and these have been referred to in the extensive bibliography. There is inevitably some overlap in the material discussed arising from duplication of interest and from the close association of the subject matter. The authors were asked to discuss normal values and the changes brought about in these by physiological stresses, particularly those imposed by pregnancy, age, lactation, and changing nutrition. In some cases, where it was considered suJtable, the response to certain pathological conditions have also been discussed. It is hoped that the monograph will be of value to those using sheep in comparative research into veterinary and human medicine as well as to students of ruminant physiology. Book excerpt: Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), Nanoparticles, and Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress-Induced Cell Death Mechanisms presents the role of ROS?mediated pathways cellular signaling stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, oxidative stress, oxidative damage, nanomaterials, and the mechanisms by which metalloids and nanoparticles induce their toxic effects. The book covers the ecotoxicology of environmental heavy metal ions and free radicals on macromolecules cells organisms, heavy metals?induced cell responses, oxidative stress, the source of oxidants, and the roles of ROS, oxidative stress and oxidative damage mechanisms. It also examines the nanotoxicity, cytotoxicity and genotoxicity mechanisms of nanomaterials and the effects of nanoparticle interactions. Antioxidant defense therapy and strategies for treatment round out the book, making it an ideal resource for researchers and professional scientists in toxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental science, nanomaterials and the pharmaceutical sciences. - Covers the ecotoxicology of environmental heavy metal ions and the interactions between specific heavy metals?induced cell responses and oxidative stress - Provides a better understanding of the mechanism of nanomaterial-induced toxicity as a first defense for hazard prevention - Covers recent advances in new nanomedication technologies for the effects of NPs on oxidative stress, ROS and ER stress - Discusses the effects of interactions between antioxidant defense therapy, ROS and strategies for treatment

Book excerpt: Current pressures to maximise the use of forages in ruminant diets have renewed interest in fast, inexpensive methods for the estimation of their nutritional value. As a result, a wide variety of biological and physiochemical procedures have recently been investigated for this purpose. This book is the single definitive reference volume on the current status of research in this areaCovers all forages eaten by ruminant animals

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive volume to look at the importance of short-chain fatty acids in digestion, the function of the large intestine and their role in human health. Short-chain fatty acids are the major product of bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates in the human and animal large intestine. They represent the major end products of digestive processes occurring in the caecum and large intestine. As such, they form an important dietary component and it is increasingly recognised that they may have a significant role in protecting against large bowel cancer and in metabolism. Prepared by an international team of contributors who are at the forefront of this area of research, this volume will be an essential source of reference for gastroenterologists, nutritionists and others active in this area.

Book excerpt: Symbiosis, Volume II: Associations of Invertebrates, Birds, Ruminants, and Other Biota focuses on associations involving insects, birds, and terrestrial vertebrates, as well as ectosymbiosis and endosymbiosis. The selection first offers information on insects and their endosymbionts and insect ectosymbiosis. Discussions focus on distribution of endosymbioses in insects; behavior of symbionts during embryogeny; physiological problems of insect symbioses; and miscellaneous insect symbioses. The manuscript also elaborates on ectosymbiosis in wood-inhabiting insects and aquatic insects. The book takes a look at avian symbiosis and intestinal microorganisms of ruminants and other vertebrates, as well as areas in which symbiosis affects birds and biochemical processes in the lower part of the alimentary tract of ruminants and in nonruminants. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the relationships of insects, birds, and terrestrial vertebrates.

This book was released on 2005-04-19 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is intended to provide in-depth reviews of the recent advances in major areas of metabolism in growing domestic animals. The study of metabolism represents a nexus of biological phenomenon that integrates the impact of nutrition, physiology, endocrinology, immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology in an organism. The development of new methodological techniques and experimental approaches have provide scientists with a greater understanding of how key nutrients or substrates are metabolized at the cellular, organ, and whole animal level. This book presents contributions from leading scientists in nutrition and physiology that highlight important new developments in interorgan and tissue-specific metabolism of protein and amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, and carbohydrates in monogastric and runinant species. Authors will describe the impact of specific biochemical pathways and expression of critical enzymes, routes of nutrient or substrate input, and anatomical or structural influences on the rates of metabolism in a given tissue or cell type. Major substrates/ fuels for oxidative metabolism, key signaling pathways, and intracellular molecules that regulate the major metabolic processes will be described. Also included is how the metabolism of growing animals is influenced by ontogeny, stage of differentiation, and major changes in diet, or the environment. The concepts and specific findings in each area are discussed in the context of their impact on the nutrient requirements, growth, environmental impact, healt and well-being of animals. The book will be a useful reference for research scientists, teachers and students interested in and advanced understanding of metabolism in growing animals. The book is written by leading experts and highlights some of the most recent advances in the field of metabolism. It is a useful reference for researchers and advanced level graduate students in nutrition, physiology and animal science. Presents recent advances in the field of metabolism.
