In the process of ductile fracture, voids nucleate, grow and coalesce, and it is this linking process that creates the fracture. Ductile fracture has typically been modeled at the continuum level, in a variety of models that may or may not model voids explicitly. Previously we have studied the plasticity associated with void growth in fcc metals, focusing on copper. In the work discussed here we examine void growth in single crystal and polycrystalline body-centered cubic (bcc) metals (V, Nb, Ta, Mo and W) subjected to tension at a high rate and high triaxiality. Large-scale atomistic models provide detailed information on void nucleation and growth and the plasticity generated as voids coalesce, based solely on the constitutive properties inherent in the interatomic forces. The details of the plasticity may be used to inform dislocation dynamics and continuum plasticity models in order to develop models that scale beyond the nanoscale. We also discuss concurrent multiscale modeling of void growth using Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamics.

Book excerpt: For ductile metals, dynamic fracture during shock loading is thought to occur through void nucleation, growth, and then coalescence that leads to material failure. Particularly for high purity metals, it has been observed by numerous investigators that, under incipient spall conditions, voids appear to heterogeneously nucleate at some grain boundaries, but not others. Several factors can affect the void nucleation stress at a grain boundary, such as grain boundary structure, orientation with respect to the loading direction, energy and excess volume, in addition to its interactions with dislocations. In this work, we focus on the influence of loading direction with respect to the grain boundary plane and grain boundary properties such as energy and excess volume on the stress required for void nucleation of a grain boundary, in copper from moleculardynamics simulations. Flyer plate simulations were carried out for four boundary types with different energies and excess volumes. These boundaries were chosen as model systems to represent various boundaries observed in "real" materials. Simulations indicate that there is no direct correlation between the void nucleation stress at a boundary and either its energy and excess volume. This result suggests that average properties of grain boundaries alone are not sufficient indicators of the spall strength of a boundary and perhaps local boundary properties need to be taken into account in order to predict its susceptibility to void nucleation for broad ranges of materials. We also present both experimental and simulation results corresponding to the affect of orientation on void nucleation.

Book excerpt: Although computational modeling and simulation of material deformation was initiated with the study of structurally simple materials and inert environments, there is an increasing demand for predictive simulation of more realistic material structure and physical conditions. In particular, it is recognized that applied mechanical force can plausibly alter chemical reactions inside materials or at material interfaces, though the fundamental reasons for this chemomechanical coupling are studied in a material-speci c manner. Atomistic-level s- ulations can provide insight into the unit processes that facilitate kinetic reactions within complex materials, but the typical nanosecond timescales of such simulations are in contrast to the second-scale to hour-scale timescales of experimentally accessible or technologically relevant timescales. Further, in complex materials these key unit processes are “rare events” due to the high energy barriers associated with those processes. Examples of such rare events include unbinding between two proteins that tether biological cells to extracellular materials [1], unfolding of complex polymers, stiffness and bond breaking in amorphous glass bers and gels [2], and diffusive hops of point defects within crystalline alloys [3].

Book excerpt: Austenitic superalloys exhibit dramatic reductions in ductility and crack growth resistance when high fugacity hydrogen and hydrogen-producing environments trigger a change in fracture mode from microvoid coalescence to slip band and intergranular fracture. Of particular importance is the change to intergranular fracture. We have therefore combined the Embedded Atom Method (EAM) with Monte Carlo simulations and molecular dynamics calculations to help define the effects of hydrogen on segregation and fracture at the atomic level. Nickel was used to simulate the face-centered-cubic austenite lattice while symmetric and asymmetric [sigma]9 tilt boundaries were used to simulate grain boundaries. These simulations show that grain boundaries are strong trap sites for hydrogen. They further show that hydrogen dramatically reduces the bond strength between atoms at grain boundary sites while inhibiting dislocation generation.
