Book Synopsis Voices in the Night by : Steven Millhauser
Download or read book Voices in the Night written by Steven Millhauser and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Martin Dressler: sixteen new stories—“spellbinding, masterly, sublime” (The New York Times Book Review)—that delve into the secret lives and desires of ordinary people, alongside retellings of myths and legends that highlight the aspirations of the human spirit. Beloved for the lens of the strange he places on small town life, Steven Millhauser further reveals in Voices in the Night the darkest parts of our inner selves to brilliant and dazzling effect. Here are stories of wondrously imaginative hyperrealism, stories that pose unforgettably unsettling what-ifs, or that find barely perceivable evils within the safe boundaries of our towns, homes, and even within our bodies. Here, too, are stories culled from religion and fables: Samuel, who hears the voice of God calling him in the night; a young, pre-enlightenment Buddha, who searches for his purpose in life; Rapunzel and her Prince, who struggle to fit the real world to their dream. Heightened by magic, the divine, and the uncanny, shot through with sly and winning humor, Voices in the Night seamlessly combines the whimsy and surprise of the familiar with intoxicating fantasies that take us beyond our daily lives, all done with the hallmark sleight of hand and astonishing virtuosity of one of our greatest contemporary storytellers.

Discover a plurality of perspectives in this enlightening anthology of stories that turns preconceptions on their head. Gracie sees a chance of fitting in at her South Carolina private school, until a “white trash”–themed Halloween party has her steering clear of the rich kids. Samuel’s Tejano family has both stood up to oppression and been a source of it, but now he’s ready to own his true sexual identity. A Puerto Rican teen in Utah discovers that being a rodeo queen means embracing her heritage, not shedding it. . . . For most of America’s history, rural people and culture have been casually mocked, stereotyped, and, in general, deeply misunderstood. Now an array of short stories, poetry, graphic short stories, and personal essays, along with anecdotes from the authors’ real lives, dives deep into the complexity and diversity of rural America and the people who call it home. Fifteen extraordinary authors—diverse in ethnic background, sexual orientation, geographic location, and socioeconomic status—explore the challenges, beauty, and nuances of growing up in rural America. From a mountain town in New Mexico to the gorges of New York to the arctic tundra of Alaska, you’ll find yourself visiting parts of this country you might not know existed—and meet characters whose lives might be surprisingly similar to your own. Book Synopsis Voices in the Darkness by : Kathe Koja
Download or read book Voices in the Darkness written by Kathe Koja and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the world is a very dark place. You know the magic is still out there, but it feels distant, or displaced. Voices in the Darkness is an attempt to create a link, to bring some of those voices together in a single work of art. Six award-winning authors lent their talent to this work. The stories are unique, and dark, filled with wonder and emotion. Included are: Nadia Bulkin's "Vide Cor Meum (See My Heart)" is a unique twist on true crime as fiction. Kathe Koja's "Pursuivant Island" will resonate differently with every reader, has meaning on different levels, and touches on an actual artistic event. Elizabeth Massie's "Baggie" explores the horror of losing control of one's life, self, everything to another. Cassandra Khaw takes you on a journey through the pain of bad relationships, while reminding her readers of their own self worth. Nick Mamatas takes on the historical character behind the old, old song "Mack the Knife," in his tale, titled appropriately "Ba boo Dop doo Dop boo ree." Brian A. Hopkins' novella "La Belle Époque," explores history, Winchester rifles, and addiction of a very personal persuasion. We all hear voices in the darkness; in the pages of this book you will hear six of them very clearly.

Book Synopsis Voices from the Tomb: A short story collection by : James Hagerty
Download or read book Voices from the Tomb: A short story collection written by James Hagerty and published by America Star Books. This book was released on 2006-10-23 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rattling skeletons or real blood‑and‑flesh beings...the reader is asked to choose, form a judgment. Eight stories of misfits-four male, four female-driven to the edge by loneliness. The stories court the horror genre, but are much more. They are existential in that the characters ask, like Hamlet, "To be or not to be." Theobald Titus, a concert violinist, lusts after adolescent boys while married to a supportive, socialite wife. "Srebrenica" revisits the horror of Bosnia through the hazy memory of an expatriate portrait painter. Picacho del Diablo pits a conflicted college grad against a Baja California mountain. For a deformed and maladjusted accountant, permanent hooky from work leads to double murder. The tutor, Nicole, meets an "eligible" suitor with fish breath. Dil, an escapee from a mental institution, terrorizes a solitary widow who dreams of being a Rockette. The last story, a novelette, dances a fine line between dreams and reality; the orderly unfolding of time and its disintegration. This fragmenting, while fearsome, hints at a higher cohesion in the pageant of life.
