Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational English: A Textbook for Commercial and Technical Schools Each year it becomes more difficult for an American to "get along in the world" unless he speaks and writes good English. This book is an attempt to provide the main essentials of an English training sufficient for competent work in any ordinary vocation. Part One presents the principles of correct English - the laws of the language as to word formation, spelling, punctuation, and, above all, correct sentence making. The student who thoroughly masters Part One will not make the common blunders that mar the writing even of many college students -blunders that sometimes give rise to the charge that our education fails to prepare young people for business. Part Two provides for practice in composition, both oral and written, of the kinds most directly useful in everyday life. It is not intended that Part One as a whole shall precede Part Two in teaching. Both parts will naturally be used to some extent side by side, the teacher assigning composition work from Part Two along with study of the principles developed in Part One. The following specific suggestions as to the use of the book may be helpful: (1) The first seven chapters make an obvious natural unit, providing a review of the grammatical foundation for correct speaking and writing. This study begins with the sentence and its main elements, because the fundamental necessity of intelligible composition is proper sentence structure. (2) Chapter VIII (Punctuation) can be used at any time after the student has a fair knowledge of correct sentence making, and will be valuable for reference throughout the course. (3) Chapters IX-XI inclusive may be studied at the teacher's discretion in relation to other parts of the work; but the word study of Chapter IX will be helpful as a basis for the spelling review in Chapter X. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses what constitutes vocational education as well as its key purposes, objects, formation and practices. In short, it seeks to outline and elaborate the nature of the project of vocational education. It addresses a significant gap in the available literature by providing a single text that elaborates the scope and diversity of the sector, its key objectives (i.e. vocations and occupations), its formation and development as an education sector, and the scope of its purposes and considerations in the curriculum. The volume achieves these objectives by discussing and defining the concept of vocational education as being that form of education that seeks to advise individuals about, prepare them for, and further develop their capacities to perform the kinds of occupations that societies require and individuals need to participate in—and through which they often come to define themselves. In particular, it discusses the distinctions between occupations as a largely social fact and vocations as being a socially shaped outcome assented to by individuals. As people identify closely with the kinds of occupations they engage in, the standing of, and the effectiveness of vocational education is central to individuals’ well-being, competence and progress. Ultimately, this book argues that the provision of vocational education needs to realise important personal and social goals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English for Vocational Purposes provides a linguistic description of English in the context of the trades and investigates how this specialist language is used in real-world contexts. As the demand for English-speaking workers in the trades grows internationally, a major gap in the research on language in the trades is evident. Based on courses in construction and engineering at a polytechnic in New Zealand, this book offers an empirical response to this gap in research. Features of this book include: new research on linguistic features of written and spoken texts in trades education, with a special focus on discourse, visual elements of written texts and vocabulary; real-life examples of the language in context, along with implications for teaching and learning and a chapter devoted to putting research findings into practice; qualitative and quantitative data to support examples and shed light on the most complex aspects of English as a trades language; supplementary material online which includes technical word lists in areas of carpentry, plumbing, automotive technology and fabrication (welding). Paving the way for a new research agenda in the field of ESP, English for Vocational Purposes is key reading for advanced students, researchers and practitioners in the areas of ESP, trades education and vocational education.

Book excerpt: Vocational education and training (VET) have a key role to play in raising skill levels and improving a society’s productivity. In this important new book, a team of international experts argue that too often national VET policy has been formulated in ignorance of historical and political developments in other countries and without proper consideration of the social objectives that it might help achieve. Examining a wide range of contrasting international approaches and development strategies, this book demonstrates the central role of the state in implementing an effective system of VET and assesses the extent to which different VET policies can promote equality in the labour market and social justice. Key themes include: the broader educational and social aims of VET the nature of learning in vocational contexts the historical development of VET in the UK, US, Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands and elsewhere. Including a full range of case-studies and practical examples, this book is essential reading for all students, researchers and practitioners with an interest in vocational education and training, industrial and labour relations or social policy.

This is the first handbook of its kind that specifically concentrates on research and research methods in TVET. The book’s sections focus on particular aspects of the field, starting with a presentation of the genesis of TVET research. They further feature research in relation to policy, planning and practice. Various areas of TVET research are covered, including on the vocational disciplines and on TVET systems. Case studies illustrate different approaches to TVET research, and the final section of the book presents research methods, including interview and observation methods, as well as of experimentation and development. This handbook provides a comprehensive coverage of TVET research in an international context, and, with special focus on research and research methods, it is a cutting-edge resource and reference.

It analyzes current and future economic and labor market trends and relates these to likely implications for vocational education and training. It questions how VET engages with the growing power of human development approaches and with the sustainable development agenda. Equity and inclusion are discussed in a range of ways by the authors and the consideration of the construction of these terms is an important element of the handbook. It further addresses both the overall notion of system reform, at different scales, and what is known about particular technologies of systems reform across a variety of settings. Vocational learning and VET teacher/trainer education are discussed from a comparative perspective. National and comparative experiences are also shared on questions of equity and efficiency in funding in terms of those that fund and are funded, and for a range of funding methodologies. As well as reviewing existing gaps, this handbook is looking forward in identifying promising new directions in research and environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book addresses a range of aspects of internationalization in vocational education and training (VET) in different countries. It considers the impact of internationalization and student mobility on VET at the sectoral, institutional and individual levels as the sector emerges as a key tool for social and structural change in developing nations and as a flexible and entrepreneurial means of growth in developed nations. The book explores not only the effects of the neo-liberal market principle underpinning VET practices and reforms, but importantly considers internationalization as a powerful force for change in vocational education and training. As the first volume in the world that examines internationalization practices in VET, the book provides VET and international education policymakers, practitioners, researchers and educators with both conceptual knowledge and practical insights into the implementation of internationalization in VET.
